But she was starting to notice things looked different. It was nearly imperceptible, the shift from grays to pinks, whites to yellows, and blacks to blues. The world seemed brighter, and things were coming into focus. Colors made everything seem separated where before it had blurred into a mass of shadows. And when Margot looked in the mirror, she saw that her hair was turning red. Her first thought was to run and tell Logan, forgetting for a moment that he had someone else now.

He met her in their usual spot in the library. Margot took her time walking in, marveling at how rich the wood of the bookshelves had become, the depth of the spines of all the books in their faded cloth covers. Even the floor, which was black and white tiles, looked starkly different from the surroundings, which she had never noticed before. She rounded the corner and found Logan sitting at their table, already reading. He lifted his head when he heard her approach, and he smiled. "Hey! It's good to see you again," he said. His face fell and he frowned, eyeing her with concern. "Margot? Are you okay?"

As soon as she saw him, she felt like someone had sucked all the air out of her lungs. The library was nothing compared to Logan - the flush of his cheeks, his pink lips, his shining green eyes - he was the only thing she could see. He seemed so full of life, and the world that she had just been standing in awe of seemed dull by comparison. "You..." She pressed her lips together and tried to string a complete thought together. "You have green eyes too."

Logan's brows - a darker blonde than his hair - drew together in a question. "I'm aware," he said slowly, a realization dawning on him. "You can see that?"

Margot nodded, still processing what had just been brought to her attention. "And I can see my hair now," she added numbly, her whole reason for wanting to see him in the first place.

"Congratulations," he said softly, still looking at her with a question in his eyes. "So you've found your soulmate then."

"I think I have," she replied, staring at him intently. Her heart clenched suddenly. "But...he's got someone else."

"What?" Logan's eyes narrowed, breaking the spell. He was genuinely confused. "Margot, what are you talking about?"

She sat down across from him and folded her hands on the table, weaving her fingers tightly together. "Logan, I think you're my soulmate. But I don't want to get in the way of-" He was holding back a smile, poorly covering it with his hand. "Hey, don't laugh, this is serious!" she complained.

Logan let out a deep breath and took Margot's hands in his own. "I know. I don't mean to laugh. I just...you're so smart, and you never realized it's been you this whole time."

"What?" Margot pulled her hands away. "That's absurd."

"Come on!" Logan said incredulously. "Everyone here knows I've been in love with you since the moment we met. And I guess you've realized that you love me back."

Margot's heart was beating a mile a minute, but the knot in her stomach was gone. "I..." She couldn't disagree with him, because he wasn't wrong. "I think you're right," she admitted.

"It's new for you, not knowing everything, isn't it?" Logan said a little smugly.

Margot made a face at him, but it quickly turned into a shy smile. "Yeah, well. The colors don't lie. You're my person, Logan Mallory."

"Oh, so we're using my full name now, are we?" Logan smiled back at her and reached for her hand again, which she gladly placed in his open palm. He gave her a reassuring squeeze. "I'm glad to be your person, Margot Moran."

"Yeah, you're right. That sounds dumb," she said, laughing. Logan laughed too and ran his thumb over the back of her hand. "So what now?" Margot asked suddenly, mind racing ahead to the future.

Logan just smiled, eyes gleaming, and replied, "I guess we find out together."

And that’s that! The end of my random decision to sit down and write about my favorite characters doing things other than their main story

I had a ton of fun writing this, hopefully it provides some sort of emotional impact for people (probably not much bc you don’t know the characters like I do, but that’s not your fault it’s mine lol) 

Margot huffed as she threw herself into her usual seat in the library. Logan looked up from his book quizzically. "Something wrong?" he asked.

"I am so sick of this whole soulmate business!" she exclaimed. "First of all, it doesn't make any sense. How do people even know the difference between black and white ​and colors anyway? Does the entire world just suddenly shift? Because that doesn't make sense either, how can you know if someone's your soulmate when you first meet them?"

Logan sighed and set his book down, settling in for a long discussion with Margot. He was used to her getting up in arms about things like this, and he never minded listening to her rant. "I take it you've been with Diana."

Margot folded her arms and leaned back in her chair. "Yes. And she and Simon have been insufferable."

"I don't suppose you could just ask her these questions?" Logan suggested, but Margot just huffed again.

"You don't think I've tried that? She said it's all subjective. What am I supposed to do with that?" Margot rolled her eyes. "Nobody respects the scientific process around here."

"Margot, we live in a world where people can control the elements and the world bursts into color when you meet your soulmate," Logan reminded her gently. "I don't think anybody would describe it as anything besides magical."

"Magic is just science we don't understand yet," Margot replied. "Everything has rules. Is it so terrible that I want to figure them out? Maybe I just want to be prepared for when I meet my soulmate."

Logan stared at her so deeply that she was slightly taken aback. "What?" she asked, perturbed.

"How do you know you haven't already?" he murmured. Her eyes narrowed. Her green eyes. Logan had been seeing the colors of her face slowly come to life over the past few weeks, and he was wondering if she'd seen the same change in him.

But she just laughed, and he dropped his gaze, embarrassed. "Please. I would know if things were different." Margot tried to catch Logan's eye again, but his eyes were fixed on the table between them. "Why do you say that?" She gasped. "You've met your someone!"

Logan didn't look up, but Margot knew that she was on to something. "Oh, this is excellent! I can use you for research. I want to know what colors look like before they're colors. That way I can have a frame of reference. How does anybody do it without studying first? When the world becomes colorful, does everyone suddenly know what 'blue' is?" She continued on, rambling about how if everything burst into color all at once, it would probably be too overwhelming, and how ridiculous it would be for someone to realize it was their soulmate at first sight. Love was something to be built up over time, and real love couldn't happen in an instant. "Who's to say we even have one soulmate anyway? Maybe we do get to choose our soulmates, they're not preordained. I'd like that better than having the universe pick one out for us." She finally noticed that Logan still wasn't speaking, but was just staring at her, an odd expression on his face. "Why are you looking at me like that?"

"You have bright red hair," he said after a moment of considering her. "I'm sure you already knew that. But I've never noticed it before."

She smiled and tugged at one of her wild curls. "Yeah, that's what I've been told. I wish I could see it too."

"It's lovely," Logan said. Margot recognized the look on his face as longing, and hurriedly pulled her glasses off to polish them as an excuse for not looking at him anymore. They sat there quietly for a moment, and Margot felt a lump settle in her stomach. It wasn't guilt, exactly, but it was something.

So there it is! Lmk if you actually read the whole thing lol I’m splitting it up into parts but this is definitely the longest thing I’ve ever posted on here before! I’ve also never done an AU for one of my stories before but I like this sort of short break from the story while still getting to play around with the characters

It took Margot a few days to recognize the lump as jealousy, and even then she was in denial about her emotions for some time. She and Logan were out by the lake, a favorite spot of his, and she was asking him to describe the trees. "I don't know what to tell you," he said. "They're green."

"I know they're green, but what kind of green? Dark? Light? Both? Be more descriptive. How does the green make you feel?" she pressed him. He rolled his eyes and she nudged him playfully with her shoulder.

Logan sat back on his hands and stared up at the limbs over their heads. "The sunlight is golden, filtering through the trees, which are still green," he said teasingly, before growing serious. "The trees make me feel warm. They're the color of my soulmate's eyes."

Margot was speechless for a moment. There was a tenderness in his voice that she had never heard from him before. She quickly shook herself out of it, ignoring the way her stomach twisted when she said, "You don't talk about your soulmate much. Do I know her? Or him, I guess."

Logan cut her a sideways glance. "She is someone you know, yes. But I don't think she's who you'd expect her to be."

"Ooh, I love a good mystery," Margot said, grinning. "If I guess right, will you tell me?"

"You don't have to guess, I'll just tell you if you want to know-" Logan began, but Margot started waving her hands at him, interrupting.

"No! I want to figure it out. I'm good at this. Someone I know with green eyes...ugh, I wish I could see colors too! That would help a lot." She pondered for a moment, running through everyone she knew at camp, which was everyone. "Is it Bella? No, that would be too obvious."

Logan smirked, looking out over the lake. "You're never going to get it."

"Yes I will!" But Margot didn't really try all that hard. And the more she thought about it, the more she didn't want it to be someone like Bella. She didn't want it to be anybody at all, but that wasn't fair. Logan deserved happiness like anyone else, and it had already happened. He'd found his soulmate, and she was still alone. So there was no use in getting upset about it.

She couldn't put her finger on why she was so upset. At first she thought it was because Logan was her friend, and his soulmate, whoever she was, would get to spend more time with him, therefore taking him away from her. But that wasn't it, because as the summer wore on, they spent no less time together than before. They still spent most of their free time in the library, reading and researching whatever Margot fancied that day. She mentioned this to Logan once, that she felt bad for taking him away from his soulmate. But he just shook his head and said there was no place he'd rather be. Then he pushed her ladder, sending her sailing down the stacks.

Margot decided to go Diana for advice. Now that she was neatly partnered up with Simon, Diana would know how to help her. And before she and Simon had realized their undying love for each other, she had been Margot's best friend. So Margot approached her one day while they were getting ready for training in the Fire Arena. It was a cloudy day, perfect for Fire balancing - nobody would get overheated. Diana was last out of the cabin as usual, and Margot trailed behind to keep pace with her.

"What's eating you, Margot?" Diana asked, stomping up the well-worn dirt path behind the rest of the girls.

Margot didn't bother to ask how she knew something was wrong. She twisted her hands together and said, "Well, it's about the whole soulmate thing."

"Oh, yeah. Everyone's been finding their soulmates this summer. It's like the summer of love or something." Diana stopped and turned to Margot, blocking the path. "Wait. Have you found your someone?"

"What? No, don't be ridiculous. There's been no big burst of color, no sparks flying, not even so much as someone trying to hold my hand," Margot said. "Same as always."

Diana put a hand on Margot's shoulder. "Dude, I told you it's subjective. With me and Simon, it was a big burst of color, because that's who I am as a person. I go for things fast. It took him awhile to get on the same level as me. He told me that everything came in slowly, starting with my skin, and then my eyes and hair, and then the rest of the world."

"Is that how you know, then? Because it's really likely that a bunch of people will be starting to see colors at the same time. So if it's a person coming into color, then that's your soulmate. I wonder if anyone has colors come into their environment first..." Margot trailed off when she saw Diana staring at her with an eyebrow raised. "Sorry, I know. I'm just trying to figure everything out."

"And that's your problem!" Diana exclaimed, throwing her arms out. "Margot, you know I love you. But you're so...uptight about stuff like this. You just have to let it happen. You can't figure it out. That's not how it works."

"Why not?" Margot pouted, but she knew Diana was right.

Diana linked her arm with Margot's and tugged her into the forest. "Come on. It's not a race. You'll find your soulmate. Or more likely, your soulmate will find you. And when the time is right, you'll know."

Margot allowed herself to be pulled to the Fire Arena, where she had a lovely time with her cabin and she forgot all about her problems for a short while. But that evening, as she sat with a book on her lap in her bed, she felt odd. She had been avoiding Logan, feeling weird about his soulmate, and self-conscious that she hadn't found hers.
