Sunny leaned forward, sitting backwards on one of Komatsu’s chairs and feeling admiring that the man processed fresh herbs by hand, even in his home cooking. While he couldn’t tell one leaf from another by looking at them, the smells were familiar to him, and it was fascinating to experience them unfold. One in particular washed over him as the plant was sliced open with the knife’s precise movements– it was sharp and distinct, and not exactly what Sunny would think of rubbing on the heavy chunk of porklike meat. He made a show of squinting at the cutting board. “That’s mint.”
“Y-yeah.” Komatsu looked up him with worried eyes and Sunny immediately regretted saying anything. “Do you not like mint?”
“No–”
“Because I can do something else if you want, I just thought it was a good fit…” His gaze went down to his hands, indecision casting something quite ugly over his features.
“Of course it is.” Sunny said firmly, trying to get Komatsu back on track. “But how do you decide on these things?”
“Oh!” He smiled with relief and made a contemplative humming noise. “Well before you came, I was reading a book by-”
And that was the last Sunny heard. His mind was too full to focus on any more than the smell of herbs and how lovely Komatsu’s mouth was when he was talking about something he was interested in.
