Short little rant on Gov't control over alcohol.
I live in Ontario, Canada. We can only purchase liquor at licensed retailers. Unfortunately for us, the only licensed retailers are government operated. The LCBO and The Beer Store. The Provincial Gov't has monopolized the control and distribution of alcohol.
Which is complete and utter bullshit!!
I have never been too bothered about it before, because I've only ever had minor inconveniences.(For example: Forgetting I have nothing at home and running late to a party and the store closes at 9.)
But...
Today is New Year's Eve. Quite possibly the party biggest house party day of the year, with 1st/4th of July aside. I get off of work at 5, I drive home and grab a bite to eat and get changed. I looked at the clock and realized it was 6:10, and that I should probably go pick up some beer before it gets too late. To my dismay when I got to the store, they closed at 6:00PM... on New Years Eve...
...ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?!
My problem with this, is that I grew up in England. Where we have off licenses open till at least late evening. In America you can get almost any liquor from a corner store. Hell! even in some backwater towns here in ontario with populations smaller than the High School I attended have 1 Convenience store and they are licensed to sell alcohol. Why is it such a hassle to just allow any retailer to obtain a liquor license?
