The phone ringing wasnât unusual, but normally Liam didnât call at this time of the race weekend.Â
âWhatâs up, baby?â you said into the phone, muting the TV from Channel 4. You were watching the race, of course, even if you were home.Â
âIâm so fucking sorry, I didnât mean to say anything,â he whispered in a rush.Â
âWhat?âÂ
âIâŠâ You could hear him gulp, maybe rub the back of his neck like he did when he was nervous. âI mightâve gotten a little angry in the media pen and spilled about you. And the MRI. Iâm sorry.âÂ
You paused. Well, it certainly wasnât idealâyou had been planning to stay as low-key as you could, to keep your lives private. But at the same time, youâd gotten married at 21. It had been a couple of years of quiet and peacefulness. It wasâfine. You found yourself ready to share Liam with the rest of the world.Â
âItâs okay,â you promised, and then added, âbut if your socials team wants me to do anything, absolutely not.âÂ
âOf course, baby, never.âÂ
You could hear the relief in his voice.Â
âGo kill them in the race, and then come back home.âÂ
âAlways.â
***
âIâll be home in thirty,â Liam was telling you, phone pressed to his ear, as he exited the building only toâ âoh my fucking God!âÂ
He was blinded, well and truly blinded, paparazzi flashing in front of his eyes as he jumped into the car that was parked on the curb. How the fuck had they found him? âGimme, babyââÂ
âWhatâs up?â your voice came through the carâs radio system once his phone connected and he buckled himself in, getting ready to drive.Â
Liam gritted his teeth. The paps had come prepared, with their own cars driving after him as he navigated through the city, trying to get home to you safely.Â
âTheyâre fucking everywhere!âÂ
âThey? Whoâs they?âÂ
âPaps. Stay in the apartment, I donât wantââ he swerved right, hard, âdonât want you getting papped.âÂ
It didnât matterâLiam spent the next twenty minutes driving around, trying to throw them off, but they were everywhere and by the time he finally gave up and parked outside, knowing your apartment might be declared for the whole world to see in the morning, he was beyond caring, stumblingâexhaustedâinto your arms in the apartment upstairs.

liamlawson30 I can't believe I have to post this. In the last 2 days since getting to Monaco, I've been followed by paparazzi and fans, trying to figure out where I live. This is NOT okay.
In the meantime, yes I am married. My lovely wife has no social media, so you don't need to even try to look for her and invade our privacy further. We're very happy. If she wants to come to a Grand Prix, she will. For now, she doesn't, and that's perfectly alright. She's okay; she is not pregnant, as some people seem insistent on proving. She just had a little trip and we were waiting for an MRI together.
And to those saying I'm making her up...know that I don't care what you think, but she's a darling and insisted I post our wedding rings. Enjoy.
To my fans, thank you.

âI want to live through you,â you announced to Liam.Â
He blinked, rolling over on the couch to look up at you. âSorry?âÂ
âThrough your Instagram,â you clarified.Â
The look of confusion on Liamâs face was comical as he pushed himself up, now, to stare at you. âBaby, if you want Insta, then you can make one. The fans'll be delighted.â Â
âWhat do you mean,â you fired back, trying to suppress your smile, âis there something on yours you donât want me seeing? Is that it? What the hell Liam, weâre married!âÂ
âWhat?â Oh god, his face! His eyes were wide and they darted around you, âno! Noâyouâre literally on my phone right now, Iâm playing on yoursââhe was playing Tetris and raising your high score, unfortunatelyââof course you can always look through my phone, but I donât even have anything to hide!âÂ
You let him sit in his discomfort for a few minutes before letting loose your laughter, cackling as you pitched to the side. âDonât worry,â you barely managed to say, âI donât want Instagram. But I do want to post a soft launch.âÂ
You handed him the phone, which was already open to a new Instagram post with the pictures you selected. âGive it a funny caption,â you ordered.
He smiled. âYes maâam.â

Are Yn Ln (ex Redbull admin) and Liam Lawson dating?
Lost footage has appeared of Liam Lawson in his Redbull attire on media day, dated to the begining of the season. We know we've seen very limited footage of this day due to the team switch.
The person to leak it, Yn Ln, ex Redbull admin.
Ln left Redbull in round 3 of this season, commenting that she was looking to work in a "more specific field of media". While this was the generated media response, I think it's because of Lawson's shock exchange with VCarb racing.
While we haven't heard if Ln is following Liam, I wouldn't be shocked if something is announced in the coming days. They have always been seen as close in footage, with a certain increase of Yn appearing on Liam's social media.

Up late, building houses - Liam Lawson x Architect! Reader
Plot: You build you and youâre boyfriend a home in NewZealand!
"You've been here for hours, you need to come to bed!" Liam says, leaning against the doorway to your office.
The one perk with your job was the work from home days you were allowed but then you also had you're private project that kept you up late till 1am most nights.
The private project had started out when you first graduated university. You'd always wanted to design and build a house, and having the connections of carpenters, roofers and plumbers you didn't think it would be too much of a stretch.
You're family didn't know how you were going to afford it, however after working throughout your whole education and with the help of Liam's heafty racer paycheck you guys would be just fine to build the house between the both of you.
"Yeah, yeah in a bit" you wave him off, too concentrated on the blueprint for the underground basement/ garage you'd need at the house with all the car's Liam had started to by so that he could mod them or fix them up.
He had his hobbies, you had yours.
But that meant you had to think of everything that the house you wanted to build had to cater for the both of you.
"Babe, it's nearly 3am and we have to catch a flight tomorrow, for Singapore!" he offers and your head turns to look at the clock. You hadnt realised the time slip away that quickly. And now that you'd snapped out of your days, the amount of papers around showing your potential ideas made you relaise how much work you'd done. #
"You're right. I'm sorry, have you been on the sim all night?" you ask, a guilty look on your face for having stayed up this whole time in wait of you.
"No, i went to sleep and woke up about 10 minutes ago to no you. Sooooo, i'd really like it if my girlfriend came to bed right now rather than get no sleep before tomorrow.
"Yeah, you're right lets go" you smile, filing your things away into your brief case and placing it on the cart by the door, knowing you'd take it tomorrow on the plane with you.
You guys settle in bed before Liam turns to you, pulling you into his chest.
âSo have you thought of adding a catio for Skylar?â He asks and you look up at him, a grin forming on your face.
âNo, I was thinking of making a shed for both her and Benjiâ you say and he nods, thinking of a cute little animal shed for both of your pets youâd brought into the relationship and anymore pets youâd incur in the future.
âMmmm, but wouldnât you want a shed for a nice outside office for in the summer?â He hands run through your hair as he continues to quiz you.
âWell it would be, but we have no need for a catio when Skylar is perfectly okay going outside on her own. You know that Liamâ you chide, your boyfriend had always been very protective off his cat.
âMmmm, so no catio, what are you doing right now?â He asks, snuggling down into the bed a little bit more.
âWell I was just looking at the basement. I was thinking of having a whole room with a setup for you down there? Make shelves to put all your helmets and ⊠hopefully trophies one day!â You grin up at him. He shakes his head tucking yours into the crook of his neck before turning the lights out.
âLetâs go to sleep nowâ he says.
"Oh, i was doing the garage, i thought maybe you'd want a nice safe place to store all the cars"
"Sleeeeeeeppppp" he laughs, making you feel the vibrations against your back from his chest.
"But the garage, would you want a slope going down on the drive under or like maybe one of those fancy car lift things? Do we have that in budget?" you wonder more to yourself than anything. Liam, on the other hand shakes his head rolling over in a way to hopefully get you're brain to shut off and sleep.
"No! Come back, i haven't told you I also had the idea of a mancave with your sim in there" you start, rolling over encasing him in your arms so he cant escape making him groan.
"Look, we can discuss all this on the very very long plane ride tomorrow yes? But i need sleep, right now if im going to function as a person" he says, before silent takes over the pair of you.
The next day you wake up, youâre picking up all of the things youâll need for the race weekend ahead.
As much as you loved Liam, you really didnât want to go this weekend, you just wanted to stay in your office and start with the ground work on the house. But you knew deep down that you needed to be there to support him.
You leave a note for your sister whoâs looking after your current place and your pets while your away. You fill up both Skylar and Benjiâs bowls, giving them lots of fuss before you wheel the last suitcase to the car.
âYouâre still working while we go?â Liam asks seeing your small bag of blueprints, paper, pencils and models.
"I'm sure there will be a table in the hospitality right, I can set myself up there while your practicing and having talks with the team. I've gotta keep myself busy right?" you explain knowing that he'd understand.
"But you'll take some time to watch me drive yeah?" he teases.
"Yes of course, otherwise it will be a waste of my time coming ALL the way here" you tease back before looking up at him, kissing his cheek. Before you can pull away he's pulling you back and kissing you on the lips.
"Alright, come on" he laugh, wrapping an arm around you taking you to the car, helping you get the last of the luggage from the porch step.
"Once this house is built, maybe you can build us a barn to get married in?" he asks nonchalantly as you get into the passenger side of the car, your head snaps to him. He looked so chilled like he didn't just make a garish comment like that.
"What?" you ask in shock.
"You heard me... so a barn?" he grins.

F1 MASTERLISTđ
It didnât start when you attended your first race to shadow your superiors, nor did it start when you did your first real interview in the paddock with Charles Leclerc â according to you, it had been a disaster but the driver had been very kind to you and had eventually wished you luck for the future after noticing how nervous you looked.
No, it started when you were actually assigned to the media pen for the first time ever. Because thatâs when you met Liam Lawson.
He had just scored some points, and was your first post-race interview of the day. It made you slightly less nervous to not have to interview one of the more experienced drivers straightaway, and you hoped that everything would go well.
âHi Liam, congrats on a fantastic race today.â
âThanksâ, he replied.
The first thing he noticed when seeing you was that you were new, and that he had actually never met you before. The second thing he noticed was that you were young â you were probably his age so it wasnât that relevant, but it was more so that you seemed young for this job. The third thing he noticed was that you were exactly his type. Liam didnât mention any of those things out loud, but you could feel in his eyes that he was somehow analysing you.
âCan you talk me through the race, please?â You asked. âWas the car and strategy what you were expecting today?â
âYeah, yeah. Strategy was good,â he confirmed. âWe managed to do what we wanted to do, and the car really helped fulfil the goals we had. Yesterdayâs quali was helpful as well because I was starting from a good position, so very positive things today.â
âGreat to hear. Youâve been slowly improving since the beginning of the season, is it due to the car also improving? Or can we also give credit to you feeling more confident as time goes by?â
âOh, hmmâŠâ Liam thought for a second. He quickly glanced at his PR manager a few feet away, who nodded in order to give him some liberty to reply without criticising the carâs issues too much. âWell, I wanna say itâs mostly due to confidence. Sometimes the car isnât what it should be, and thatâs something we work on together with the team. Everyoneâs doing what they can to make it perform but we have unlucky days, itâs hard to always be perfect. But yeah, I know the work I did on myself has proven very useful. Iâve really been feeling better compared to how the season started. So, it can help turn things around when the carâŠâ â sucks, he almost said â âdoesnât perform like Iâd like, because I know that Iâm still able to take the most out of it and somehow make it work.â
When he was done talking, Liam realised that this was probably the most he had ever said in a post-race interview without being asked another question. He wished he could claim that it was due to his good result, and that it had made him more prone to share his feelings. But part of him knew that your welcoming smile and your sweet voice were the ones to blame.
âThis is more than I expectedâ, you said with a chuckle. âThank you very much for this insight; it does seem like the efforts everyone in the team make have all come together. Well done again, and good luck to keep it up for the next races.â
âThank you.â Liam simply nodded, before choosing that as his cue to leave and follow his PR manager to the next interview.
And just like that, you had successfully done your first post-race interview. You were glad that it had gone so well, and you mentally thanked Liam for being a wonderful person to talk to. Now, you were ready to interview anyone who would come your way â even if it was Lewis Hamilton or Max Verstappen.
âŠ..
You hadnât expected the interviews to be so fast-paced like that. It had been less than fifteen minutes since your first one with Liam, and you had done at least six more since then. Some had been quicker than others â like Lance Stroll or Oscar Piastri â while some had taken a similar time as Liamâs interview â such as Lando Norris or Alex Albon.
But there was one driver that you had really been wanting to interview, because he would definitely be surprised by your presence here today. And as if the Gods above could hear you, they chose to indeed send Isack Hadjar to stand in front of your mic.
He hadnât noticed you yet, as he was finishing a conversation with Ollie Bearman. But when he did, the expression on his face turned into the perfect mix of shock and happiness.
âBonjour Isack.â The smile on your face was as professional as possible, but the tone of your voice was teasing.
To say that Isack was surprised would be an understatement. You were the last person he had expected to see today, but he was definitely not mad about it.
âJe travaille,â (Iâm working) you replied like it was obvious.
âNan, maisââ Isack sighed at the teasing smile that was now on your face. âIciâ, he clarified. âĂ faire des interviews.â (Doing interviews)
âCâest ma nouvelle mission,â (Itâs my new task) you explained. âApparemment je fais assez bien mon travail pour enfin ĂȘtre sur le terrain, donc tada!â (It seems like I do my job well enough to finally be on the field, so ta-da!)
Not thinking about the fact that everything was still being broadcast live, Isack leaned over the barrier to give you a quick hug. You hadnât expected it at all, but welcomed it nonetheless.
Obliging due to Isack having completely forgotten what you had asked at the beginning â also due to him not having actually listened to any word you had said after bonjour because his brain had short-circuited, you started the interview over and repeated your question.
It was probably the happiest Isack had ever been while giving an interview, and he was now hoping that you would be there every weekend from now on.
There was also one other person who was kind of hoping for the same, and who had witnessed the exchange between you and Isack. So when Isack eventually left the media pen, he was somewhat cornered by none other than his teammate.
âHeyyyy,â Liam started as he put his arm around Isackâs shoulders. âIsack, my man, my favourite teammate.â
âReally?â Only caring about the title Liam was giving him, Isackâs eyes lit up at the sudden affection. But then, he quickly realised how out of character this was for Liam. âWait, you sound suspicious.â
âWhat? No way, mate. Iâm just happy right now,â Liam claimed. âWe both scored points, it was a good weekend. Team effort was great, interviews went well.â
âThat I can agree with.â Actually trusting Liam and not overthinking it anymore, Isack was quickly forgetting his teammateâs unusual behaviour. âI canât believe she was there to interview me, it feels insane that weâre in the same paddock.â
âShe?â Liam repeated. Bingo, he thought. He had successfully brought the conversation to you, without Isack noticing.
âOh, yeah. You probably didnât even notice but Canal has a new interviewer,â Isack explained.
âI did think she didnât look familiar indeed,â Liam pretended. But he knew. He had obviously noticed Canalâs sweet and gorgeous new reporter. He had also very much noticed how close you and Isack seemed to be, and it was now his goal to discover why.
âWell, anyway. Iâve known her since we were kids, but we lost touch a bit as we grew up soâŠâ Isack tried to remember your time together, which brought a nostalgic smile on his face. âI think I last saw her before I started competing in international karting. But we did local and national karting together, you know?â
âWell, I obviously didnât know that.â But now Liam knew, and that was more information that he had hoped to have about you. He hadnât expected you to have done karting, and wondered why you hadnât pursued a professional career. âYou never mentioned her, ever.â
âNo, yeah, I know. But we barely kept in touch, honestly. I knew she was going for journalism at one point, but itâs still a surprise to see her here.â Isack was now reminiscing about the time you had spent together as kids, mostly on track. âShe was good, you know? She was with Doriane and I in the French junior championship.â
âHow good?â Liam wondered.
âShe beat us bothâ, Isack said with a laugh.
âSo do you know why she didnât keep racing, then?â
âI told you, mate. We havenât seen each other since then, and we barely talked apart from saying congrats to each other. She texted me when I went to F3 and F2; I texted her when she graduated. And our last conversation was about me getting into F1 so I had no idea she would eventually be there, especially with Canal. She told me at that time that she had a job in sports journalism, yeah, but I just never knew it was with them.â
âOkay, yeah.â Liam nodded, memorising everything Isack was telling him.
âDamn, now I really want to have her back in my life. Didnât realise how much I had missed her until I was talking about all this. Also I should properly introduce you to her next raceâ, Isack offered.
âSure, why not.â Liam was acting casual on the outside, but he was definitely cheering on the inside. âI briefly talked with her, but one interview is definitely a short time to gauge someone.â
âIâm sure youâll like herâ, Isack claimed.
Maybe Liam already did, but Isack didnât need to know that for now.
âŠ..
Unfortunately, Liam had to wait a couple weeks before seeing you again. But there was a triple header starting this weekend, and he hoped that youâd be there for every race so that he could see you more often. Upon arriving at the track on Thursday for media day, Liam was trying to figure out a way to bring you up to Isack without being too suspicious. But it seemed like the Gods were in his favour, because he didnât even have to do that.
âLiamâ, Isack called out when he saw his teammate enter the Racing Bulls motorhome. âRemember my journalist friend? Who works for Canal,â he added.
Of course Liam remembered you, but he had to pretend to be chill about it. So he simply nodded, waiting for Isack to give whatever new information he had on you.
âI texted her after the previous race to catch up, you know, and she said sheâd be there until the end of the season! Isnât that super cool?â Isack was definitely excited to see you again, and he was glad to be able to rekindle your friendship.
âYeah, mate. Thatâs great to hear.â
âIâll introduce you to her later on. She told me sheâll do the interviews on Saturdays and Sundays so weâll be able to see her after qualifying,â Isack said. âI might ask her out for some dinner, what do you think?â
Hearing those words, Liamâs brain short-circuited. Ask her out? He thought. Did that mean that Isack was romantically interested in you? Liam had genuinely thought that Isack wanted to just be friends with you again, but maybe he had been too busy playing mastermind alone that he hadnât taken the possible competition into consideration.
âAsk her out?â Liam eventually voiced his thoughts.
âYeah,â Isack confirmed with a nod. âDo you think she wonât say yes? Is it too early for that? Maybe I should wait until weâre closer again in case itâs too much for now,â he assumed.
âI didnât think this is what you wanted when you said that you wanted her back into your life last time.â Liam wasnât necessarily mad about it, but he was now feeling insecure. Because between a random driver you had talked to once and your former karting bestie, the choice felt obvious. âBut dinner is a good idea, donât worry. Sheâll definitely appreciate the offer.â
Liam shouldnât be giving up so easily, but maybe he never had a chance to begin with. If he was lucky, maybe youâd gently reject Isack and he would then shoot his shot later on. But right now, Liam felt like he had to support his teammate.
It hadnât even been that serious to him yet anyway. It was just a silly and innocent crush that might not even evolve into something else. Hell, maybe it was just misunderstood curiosity and Liam would realise when seeing you again that what he had felt was just a friendly crush and nothing more.
He was just trying to convince himself, not caring whether it was working or not.
âŠ..
Two days later, you were finally entering the paddock. It still felt unreal to you that you would be coming here every race weekend from now on, and you couldnât believe it. You had expressed your excitement to Isack, whom you had been texting non-stop since you landed. You were really eager to see him again, and even more so to recreate a bond outside of a professional relationship.
When qualifying ended, you were already waiting in the media pen. Isack had reached Q3, which meant that you would probably wait a bit more to see him as the drivers currently present were all ones who had been out either in Q1 or Q2. Amongst them, you interviewed Pierre Gasly as well as Esteban Ocon. They were both really kind to you, and expressed once again their support to you like they had done after the previous race. You were glad at the prospect of the French drivers appreciating your work, and it made you feel more confident.
Therefore, by the time Isack was finally in front of your mic, you were more than ready for him.
âBonjour Isackâ, you said with a warm smile.
âCoucou, ça va?â (Hey, you good?) He asked, a matching grin on his face.
âOk, jâai mĂȘme pas besoin de poser plus de questions en fait.â (Ok, so I donât even have to ask more questions then) You laughed, Isack immediately joining in. âEst-ce que tu sens que le podium peut arriver bientĂŽt ou câest encore trop tĂŽt dans la saison?â (Do you feel like a podium could happen soon or is it too early in the season?)
âSuper, ça fait plaisir de te voir confiant sur ce point-lĂ en tout cas.â (Great, well itâs good to see you confident about that) You were genuinely happy for Isack, and you would definitely be rooting for him. âBonne chance pour demain.â (Good luck for tomorrow)
âMerci! Ă plus tardâ, (Thanks! See you later) Isack said before waving at you and walking away.
You were glad to be able to have those casual interactions with him, even if it still had to remain professional. After the previous race, you had expressed your worries to your superiors as you werenât sure if they would appreciate you already knowing a driver personally. But they reassured you that they didnât mind, and that it had actually done numbers with the fans. It seemed like people had found you refreshing, due to you being closer in age to the drivers â especially the rookies â compared to the usual interviewers.
After Isack, you talked to the two McLaren drivers before you had the second Racing Bulls driver in front of you.
âHi Liam.â
âHey, good to see you again.â
âOh, thanks.â You hadnât expected Liam to remember you as it was only your second time meeting him, and it took you a couple seconds to recover from that. âSo youâre starting P7 tomorrow, right behind your teammate. Isack said the car felt good this weekend, do you agree with him?â
âWell, yeah, of course. The team has been making massive efforts in the past few weeks and itâs paying off. I really think weâre on the right path, especially if we do as great as the previous race.â
âHowâs the strategy for tomorrow? Are you allowed to say if any team orders have been decided yet?â
âAh, the dreaded question.â Liam let out a dry chuckle, knowing that he was definitely going to keep it vague and give an answer that his PR manager wouldnât complain about. âWe havenât had a debrief yet, so I canât say anything for now. But I know Isack and I will work together to maximise our chances, no matter whoâs in front.â
âThatâs a very nice answer from someone who is well PR-trainedâ, you teased. âBut in all seriousness, good luck for tomorrow. I might become your biggest fan if you score again for my second time seeing you race.â
âLike my biggest fan?â Liam asked.
âYours and Isackâs,â you clarified.
âOh, yeah⊠weâll be glad to have you rooting for the team, then.â Despite the bittersweet feeling due to you mentioning Isack, Liam was truly glad to have your support for the race to come. And deep down, it was extra motivation to eventually overtake Isack tomorrow if it meant that Liam could finish ahead of his teammate with you watching him.
Liam then bid you goodbye before his PR manager led him to his next interview, while you were already moving on to talk to Max Verstappen. Even if the world champion would be starting on pole, he was still a man of a few words. The following interviews went by quickly as well, and you were soon enough released from your duties.
Ready to have a small debrief with your colleagues, you texted them to notify them about having finished all your interviews. Surprisingly, they told you that you were free to go and that it could wait until tomorrow morning. One of them sent you some recommendations of things to do near the track, and made it sound like they wouldnât accept it if you didnât try to have fun after your workday. You thanked them for their kindness, and therefore turned your work brain off as you got ready to enjoy your evening.
âŠ..
The next day felt like a blur. One minute you were watching the race, supporting the Racing Bulls drivers as promised; the next one, you were getting engulfed in a hug by Isack as soon as he entered the media pen.
âĂvidemmentâ, you said as you rolled your eyes at him before pulling back from the hug. Isackâs joy was contagious, and you couldnât help but smile at the sight of him being so happy. âSuper course de ta part, vraiment. Bravo Isack.â (Great race from you, truly. Well done Isack)
âMerci, je suis vraiment super content.â (Thanks, Iâm for real super happy)
âOui, oui, je te laisse tranquille. Ă ce soir,â (Yes, yes, Iâll leave you alone. See you tonight) Isack said before leaving the space for another driver to eventually come up to you.
You took advantage of the couple seconds you had alone to face the cameraman, silently asking if it had been alright to publicly accept Isackâs invitation. He nodded at you, and reassured you that the fans would definitely once again enjoy witnessing the friendship between a reporter and a driver.
Even if most interviews felt similar to one another, you could never get tired of asking the same questions because you were never getting the same answers to them. And so it was with a smile that you were once again concluding your last interview of the day, congratulating Charles who had won todayâs race.
True to his words, Isack was ready to bring up his dinner offer again as soon as he saw you on the way to exit the paddock. He had been waiting for you to pass by the Racing Bulls motorhome, forcing Liam to stay with him as he wanted to formally introduce the two of you.
Isack called out your name when he noticed you approaching.
âObviously you two have met each other, but now it can actually happen with me there.â Isack then acted as if it was truly your first time meeting Liam, as he officially introduced you to each other.
âGlad to meet the girl who apparently terrorised Isack in kartingâ, Liam said as he reached out for a handshake.
âGlad to meet the guy who can equal Isack in a Cars fan competition.â You took Liamâs hand in yours, firmly shaking it.
âOkay, introductions done. Where are we going to dinner now? Iâm starving after the race,â Isack announced.
âThereâs this restaurant that a coworker recommended, it seemed nice from the pictures and reviews. Not so far from the trackâ, you added.
âWorks for me, letâs go.â
This was the moment when Liam wondered if he was supposed to come with you and Isack or go his own way. Technically, Isack had only told Liam to wait with him just so he could introduce him to you before he would go have dinner with you. Was Isack planning to confess to you tonight? Or was this dinner, one to gauge the situation? Either way, Liam was unsure. So he played it safe, and decided alone to remove himself from possibly third-wheeling you and Isack.
âThatâs my cue to go, guys. Have fun togetherâ, Liam said before going the opposite way.
âWhat? Liam?â Isack hadnât expected it, finding it sudden. âSee you next weekend, I guessâŠâ Isack muttered, more to himself than anything as Liam had already left.
âI thought he was coming with us, wasnât he?â You asked Isack, not knowing if you had misunderstood the plans.
âYeah, thatâs what I thought too. This was to celebrate our points, and I also wanted you two to get to know each other.â
âThat's a shame, I definitely wouldâve enjoyed that.â
Not wanting to dwell on it â Isack thought that he would later talk to Liam about what the hell was this, you and Isack therefore left the track together to have dinner just the two of you. The restaurant you had chosen was the perfect place to catch up with the driver, and you spent most of the evening reminiscing about your karting years.
As Isackâs career had been pretty public, it had been easy for you to keep up with where he was racing as the years went by. Therefore, Isack tried to keep the conversation focused on you as he genuinely wanted to know how you had ended up working for Canal â it had been a pretty straightforward and lucky journey: a masterâs degree following your bachelorâs with several internships here and there.
You didnât think youâd had such a fun time since⊠well, since so long ago that you forgot when it was. Slowly but surely, it was as if you and Isack had never stopped being friends. It would definitely boost his morale for the next races to come, while you would be more comfortable entering the paddock each weekend and knowing that there would always be a familiar face for you to see.
This was exactly what you both had needed in your life: a steady factor that would mix nostalgia and prospect. This renewed friendship would benefit the two of you, as you and Isack were agreeing to never lose sight of each other again.
âŠ..
During the rest of the triple header, it was hard to find Isack without you close by and vice-versa. Not that you two were constantly glued next to each other, but people now knew that you were the first person Isack would go to when entering the media pen and that Isack was the one driver who could interrupt your interviews with other people without getting reprimanded for it. Safe to say, everyone was appreciating the breath of fresh air that your friendship was bringing to the paddock.
Well, everyone but Liam.
The weekend following your dinner with Isack, Liam had been slightly grumpier than usual. So when Isack had tried to talk to him about having missed the fun evening, Liam pretended that he hadnât heard his teammate and immediately brought up a different topic. Not wanting to upset Liam, Isack quickly decided to dismiss it and to not mention it again. It was then as if nothing had ever happened â which was kind of what the situation was â and the two Racing Bulls drivers were soon back to their usual antics.
A comfortable, although never dull, routine then settled in for the next few weeks: Isack landing on Wednesday in whichever country he would race, him texting you all about it so that you could eventually arrive in the paddock on Saturday without feeling lost, the two of you creating fan-favourite interviews, and hanging out after the race was over. It had become your ritual, and neither of you would trade it for anything else.
Still, there was always this little detail that kept bugging you as weeks went by. Remembering your first two races of the season, you had truly thought that you would have become friends with Liam due to you being close to his teammate. But it had now been two months since your first interview with the Kiwi driver, and it had somehow worsened between the two of you.
Isack had even told you that Liam had been excited â okay, maybe Isack was selling it a bit too much â to meet you back then, and it made you wonder if you had done something to offend Liam at some point. During interviews, you were still being your usual warm and lively self but it was obvious that Liam wasnât matching your energy like he had done at the beginning. So you could only hope that it would eventually get better in the future, preferably before the end of the season.
And it did, but at what cost.
Todayâs race was marking three months since your arrival to the paddock. Three months of shenanigans with Isack. Three months of befriending the rookies one by one. Three months of still not exchanging more than the mandatory interviews with Liam.
Even when the Racing Bulls driver would score, he was still withdrawn when it was time to stand in front of your mic. And today, more so than ever, you truly didnât think that you would be able to get more than a couple words from him due to his race result.
Liam had been forced to retire the car after only a few laps. His first DNF in seven races.
He had been doing well for the past several races, scoring almost every time â except for two unluckier races where he had been on the doorstep of points.
So when you saw Liam return to the paddock, you knew that he would soon be in the media pen and you were therefore waiting for him by the time he arrived. You had been the first one there â the other reporters had not rushed as quickly as you, which meant that Liam had no choice but to walk up to you.
The expression on his face was enough to make your heart clench, but it then broke when you noticed Liamâs red eyes.
âHello Liamâ, you softly said. He didnât reply anything, simply nodding at you to show that he was listening. âCan you tell me what happened out there?
âJust some bad luck,â he answered with a shrug. âThere was an issue with the engine, which weâll look at more in detail when I come back again to the garage after this.â
This. Like this interview was the worst experience of his life and Liam was only wishing to cut it short.
It wasnât like it was Liamâs first DNF. But it had been such a while since his last one, that he had thought he was free from them until the end of the season. And it hadnât even been his fault, but he still felt like he was partly to blame for this.
âThis is ending your streak of three races in the points, and five amongst the last seven races. Did you think you could have kept it going if not for that engine issue?â You didnât like asking hypotheticals like that, especially after an early race ending, but it was your job and you had to ask those if the occasion was there.
âWell⊠we were starting P11 so there definitely wouldâve been opportunities to score.â
You thought that would be it, that the interview would finish here and now after barely three full sentences from Liam. And you wished that you could have ended it, especially when looking at Liamâs face that was only expressing how badly he wanted to wrap his interviews up. However, it seemed like you couldnât manage enough of a good poker face because Liam quickly understood that you were trying to find a way to get more from him. It was a requirement from your job after all.
âBut thatâs racingâ, Liam eventually added. With a sigh, he ran his fingers through his hair and watched from the corner of his eyes the way your expression shifted to a surprised one. Liam was even surprising himself, and he didnât know why he had suddenly decided to help you out by talking again. But he knew why. He wouldnât have done it with any other interviewer, except you. âWeâll analyse what went wrong today, and weâll come back stronger next race.â
âThis is just a temporary low,â you reassured him. And forgetting where you even were, you didnât even notice when your own hand mindlessly went to rest over Liamâs on the barrier. âYou proved everyone, including yourself, that youâre capable of great things. So the fans and I will be waiting for your points in the next race.â
Liam had expected everything but that. He froze at your gesture, slowly looking down to where your hand was on his. It shouldnât feel like that, so reassuring and familiar. And yet, the warmth of your skin was making Liam feel less tense.
Following Liamâs gaze, your eyes eventually noticed what you had done without thinking. Swiftly removing your hand from his and putting it behind your back, you couldnât help blushing at your own action.
âYeah, hmm⊠Iâll let you go now. Thank you for your time,â you quickly said before looking away and waiting for Liam to go.
âNo problem, see you next time.â Liam then looked around, before he walked up to a reporter standing a few metres away from you.
The embarrassment you were now feeling was off the charts, and you were truly glad that what you had done hadnât been in frame. The cameraman next to you patted your back in comfort, as if he knew how you were feeling. Thankfully, there wasnât any other DNF happening anytime soon and you were therefore able to leave the media pen before finding a place to watch the rest of the race.
âŠ..
When the race ended, you were still overthinking your interview with Liam. You couldnât get it out of your head, especially as you watched a replay of it after you had settled down somewhere in the paddock. It wasn't like anyone watching the interview could guess what had happened, but you knew. And Liam knew. Which was enough for you to keep spiraling until it was time to go back to the media pen.
Even if Isack didnât have a race as unlucky as Liamâs, it was still far from his best one as well. He had finished P10 â only reaching the position because Fernando Alonso collided with Carlos Sainz, and because Ollie had received a penalty for track limits. Safe to say, Isack didnât really feel like he had been deserving of that one pity point.
âSalutâŠâ Isack said once he was standing in front of you.
âMerci, ça fait plaisir.â As usual, Isack gave you a quick hug before walking away to his next interview.
You were a constant in his life, and he was always glad to see you after his race. No matter the result, Isack knew he had your support and reassuring words waiting for him.
This would definitely be a race weekend to forget â whether it be for you, or the Racing Bulls. But maybe, just maybe, it would still be a blessing in disguise. Because later on, when you were back in your hotel room and already preparing your notes for the next grand prix, your phone buzzed from the most unexpected messages:
Thanks for earlier
You were the least worst interview today
To say you were confused when noticing the sender would be an understatement. You didnât even know how Liam had found your Instagram â well, probably amongst Isackâs following â and you didnât think you were deserving of his gratitude after your unprofessional action.
Not wanting to overthink your reply too much, you didnât waste any time writing something back:
Thatâs a title I didn't expect to get
But thank you for having made my job easier
I imagine itâs not always easy to talk about a bad race right after it ends
As if today wasnât done being full of surprises, you and Liam kept messaging each other for the following hour until he notified you of his early flight tomorrow. You wished him a good night, before you also decided to go to sleep.
Progress, you thought as you reread Liamâs last messages:
Good night to you too :)
I promise to be more talkative next weekend
Even if you would have preferred to be back on Liamâs good side after a positive race, this was more than you could have asked for. Maybe the next grand prix would finally be your occasion to get closer to him. And maybe you would finally get an opportunity to show Liam that you could be more than just an interviewer to him.
âŠ..
Thankfully, history didnât repeat itself when you entered the paddock the following weekend. Because Liam had noticed that nothing had happened between you and Isack, he deemed it safe to finally shoot his shot with you. He assumed that either Isackâs crush on you had disappeared by itself, or that you had rejected him before you two decided to stay friends.
Either way, Liam chose to stop giving you the cold shoulder when he saw you in the paddock before qualifying on Saturday. You had simply expected a smile from the driver, maybe a nod alongside it. But you were over the moon when Liam actually stopped walking and waited for you to approach him, before starting a conversation:
âHi, you doing good?â He asked. Thinking that it was his chance to have you alone, maybe it was time for Liam to stop being a coward and take advantage of the fact that Isack was for once not glued to your side.
âLiam, hey!â You couldnât help the bright smile making its way on your face, truly happy that whatever had not happened between you and Liam was water under the bridge. âIâm doing fine, excited for the race tomorrow. How are you feeling ahead of qualifying? I saw that you were doing well in FP3 earlier.â
âWhy do you sound like youâre interviewing me?â Liam teased, a chuckle escaping his lips as your idea of small talk was weirdly similar to how you worded your questions in the media pen.
âItâs not on purpose,â you argued. âProfessional habit, I guessâŠâ
âI didnât mean it in a bad way, sorry. But to answer you, I am indeed feeling confident that I can at least reach Q3.â
âThatâs good. Does that mean I shouldnât expect to see you very soon?â
âThatâll be the goal, yeah. Later means I qualified higher.â
âOkay,â you said a nod. âIâll wait for you, then.â
âNot like you have much of a choiceâ, Liam reminded you. âArenât you required to interview everyone?â
âIf you have an attitude like that after qualifying, Iâll give myself permission to skip yours.â
âIâll be good as gold, donât worry.â
âYou better be.â Although you werenât really successful, you tried to look as menacing as you could. But the ghost of a smile that appeared on your face betrayed you, and showed Liam that you didnât really mean what you were saying. âIâll see you later, yeah? Good luck for quali.â
âThanks, Iâll count down the minutes âtill Iâm speaking to you again.â
While Liam was now walking to his garage, you were already making your way to the media pen. Or at least, to somewhere you could watch the start of qualifying within range so that you wouldnât have to cross the entire paddock to get there following Q1.
After you found a nice seat to peacefully watch qualifying, you were suddenly hit with a realisation regarding your conversation with Liam. Was it You replayed in your head what he had told you, what you had replied, and most of all how everything had been said. You hadn't really thought about it at the time because you were just happy to finally be on good terms with Liam, but right now you were definitely overthinking it. Right now, you were ninety-nine percent sure that Liam Lawson had tried to flirt with you.
Iâll count down the minutes âtill Iâm speaking to you again, which had been said while his eyes were sparkling with mischief. Fuck, you thought. Liam had definitely been flirting with you, and you had completely missed it! What were you even supposed to do now? Flirt back? Not in front of the millions of F1 fans who would be watching the post-qualifying interviews on Canal+, thatâs for sure.
Should you message him? Should you do this in person? You didnât know. You were completely lost about what to do now that you had understood the situation. And you were overthinking so much that you werenât even paying attention to qualifying. Getting a hold of yourself, you then decided that you would do your best to put this whole Liam thing in the back of your mind in order to focus on what you were here for: working. You werenât about to get distracted by a hypothetical love interest â whom you had definitely not been interested with from the beginning â at the cost of doing your job well.
âŠ..
The rest of the afternoon went fine. You successfully managed to temporarily forget about the Liam situation, even when you eventually interviewed him after qualifying â he had reached Q3 as promised and would start P8 on the grid tomorrow. During your interview, both you and he stayed professional. No flirting from him, although his smile had brightened when his eyes met yours as he had entered the media pen; and no physical contact from you like the previous week.
On the outside, everything had gone well. But on the inside, you were once again panicking when you got back to your hotel room in the evening. Being alone with your thoughts felt dangerous right now, and you feared your own overthinking. You couldnât stay like this. So you did the only thing that felt right at the moment: you texted the only person who could somehow help with the situation.
On peut se voir? (Can we meet up?)
Genre lĂ maintenant (Like right now)
It didnât take long for Isack to text back. He expressed his worry about what was going on, and immediately imagined the worst. You reassured him that it wasnât a life or death situation, but more so an internal dilemma. Isack therefore reminded you of his room number, telling you that you could come whenever.
Barely ten minutes later, you were knocking on Isackâs door â the perk of booking the same hotel as your best friend was that you two were never far away from each other in case of emergency. Not bothering to put a t-shirt on, Isack opened the door shirtless.
âSuper drĂŽle,â Isack replied with sarcasm obvious in his voice. âĂ quand le one-man show?â He rhetorically asked. Motioning for you to sit on his bed, Isack went to grab a couple drinks from the mini-fridge in his room. He then sat beside you, offering you some water as well as the unopened bag of crisps that he had reserved for later. âOk, câest quoi le problĂšme du coup?â (Ok, so whatâs the issue then?)
âAlors⊠y a ce mecââ (So⊠thereâs this guyâ)
âPardon?!â Isack didnât even give you time to elaborate that he was already interrupting you. âIl sort dâoĂč?â
âBah, il te plaĂźt le gars?â (Do you like the guy?)
That was the million-dollar question. Did you like Liam? Sure, he was extremely cute. He also had that nice accent. He was very-hardworking. His smile was warm. And his hair was always messy just the right way. Andâ
âQuoi?â You didnât think you had shown any sign to confirm that one of Isackâs theories was true, until you remembered that you had the worst poker face known to mankind and that your body had betrayed you without you noticing.
âOui, bref. Câest un gars avec qui tu travailles, jâai raison?â (Yeah, anyway. Itâs a guy you work with, right?)
âPas vraimentâŠâ (Not reallyâŠ)
âPar contre si câest un des autres journalistes Canal, ils sont pas tous trop vieux pour toi?â (If itâs one of the other Canal journalists, though, arenât they all too old for you?) Isack thought about everyone he had ever met from there, and couldnât remember a single person who had looked your age.
âIl a mon Ăąge, je te rassure. Câest pas quelquâun de lĂ , mais câest un peu le travail quand mĂȘme.â (Heâs my age, no worries. Heâs not from there, but itâs still kinda work) Thinking that Isack was already getting way too close to finding the answer by himself, you figured that you couldnât keep it for yourself for much longer.
âAlors oui, je veux bien. Mais ton travail, câestâŠâ As Isack realised what you meant by a guy from work, his voice automatically died down. He looked straight into your eyes, now knowing the implications of your words. âOh putain, câest un pilote.â (Oh fuck, itâs a driver) And when you quickly avoided Isackâs gaze on you to focus on the water bottle in your hands, Isack knew that he was right. âPutain, mais fallait le dire plus tĂŽt! On a perdu dix minutes Ă tourner autour du pot!â (Fuck, you shouldâve said it sooner! We just wasted ten minutes beating around the bush!)
You groaned at the way you had helped narrow things down for Isack, without even meaning to.
âCe serait plus simple si tu me disais dâoffice. On gagnerait du tempsâ, (It would be easier if you would directly tell me. It would save some time) Isack argued.
Isack was too close to figuring it out. You could see the gears turning in his head, and you knew it was only a matter of minutes before he would narrow it down to one driver.
Not even paying attention to your silence, Isack kept listing what he knew to try and guess who it was:
The only reply you could muster to confirm Isackâs thoughts was a nod. At that, Isack almost cheered to celebrate his success in figuring it out. But then, there was the realisation.
âEt sâil refuse, tu demandes si câest moi le problĂšme.â (And if he refuses, you ask if Iâm the issue)
âĂa marche.â Isack high-fived you at the prospect of his plan working. âJe peux faire autre chose pour tâaider? Maintenant que je sais, je suis trop investi lĂ .â (Can I do anything else to help? Now that I know, I feel invested)
âMais nan, tâinquiĂštes. Tout va bien se passerâ, (No, donât worry. Everythingâs gonna be fine) Isack reassured you.
As if on cue, it seemed like the universe had a knack for comic timing; someone was knocking on Isackâs door.
âTâattendais une autre fille avec des problĂšmes de coeur ce soir?â (Were you waiting for another girl with boy problems tonight?) You teased.
âAbsolument pasâ, Isack replied. He stood up from the bed and walked towards the door before opening it. âAh, Liam.â
Hearing Isack say the name of the guy you had both been talking about for the entire evening made you immediately sit up. You had no idea what he was doing here, and it seemed like Isack was as confused as you.
âDo you need anything bro?â
âYeahâ, Liam confirmed with a nod. âI think I forgot my charger at the track, you have one I could borrow for the night?â
âYeah, no problem. I should have one lying around somewhere.â
As Isack left the doorway to go find his charger, he left the door ajar. And it was open enough for you to see Liam. But if you were able to see Liam, then he was also able to see you. Then followed the most awkward eye contact you had ever experienced as Liamâs expression turned into one of surprise at the sight of you.
âHere you go.â Isack handed his charger to Liam, bursting the bubble that had been surrounding you and him.
âThanks, mate.â Liam took the charger, but he didnât leave immediately. He lingered for a few seconds, his gaze still on you. Then, he looked at Isack. And thatâs when Liam started overthinking as he was noticing the little details that shouldnât have mattered so much: Isack shirtless, you on his bed. âI didnât know you two wereâŠâ Together. Liam didnât even want to finish his sentence, scared that his assumption was true.
âShe just came here to talk about some stuff, yeah.â Isack didnât pick up on the tone in Liamâs voice, nor did he notice the way his teammateâs expression fell. He was just focused on not letting it show that Liam had been their topic for the whole evening.
âCool, cool, cool. Iâ Iâll get going then, have fun.â Strangely similar to that one time three months ago, Liam just left without waiting for Isackâs answer.
Isack closed the door, before returning to his spot next to you on the bed. While he seemed completely chill, you were slightly nervous.
âJe sais pas, jâai pas eu lâimpression. Juste aucun de nous sâattendait Ă se voir ce soir, câest tout.â (I donât know, didnât think so. None of us were expecting to see each other tonight, thatâs all)
âTâes pas vraiment dans mon lit lĂ . Câest plutĂŽt sur le litâ, (Youâre not really in my bed right now. More like on the bed) Isack corrected.
âArrĂȘte avec les tâinquiĂštes sâil te plaĂźt parce que je vais finir par faire que ça en fait.â (Please stop saying donât worry because Iâm gonna end up doing just that)
âOk, ok.â Isack raised his hands in defence, not wanting to upset you further.
âJe pense je vais aller me coucher,â (I think Iâm gonna go to sleep) you then announced. âTu devrais faire de mĂȘme; tâas la course demain et que tu sois en forme.â (You should do the same; you have a race tomorrow and you need to be in good shape)
âOuais, tâas raison. Ăa va aller?â (Yeah, youâre right. Youâll be fine?)
You then left Isackâs room and went back to yours. You were certain that you would overthink the Liam situation for a bit before eventually being able to sleep. However, you were determined to do everything but focus on it tomorrow. It would have to wait until after the race.
âŠ..
The next day, you were still as resolute to keep Liam at the very back of your mind. Thankfully, you wouldnât see him until the post-race interviews and that enabled you to spend the day in peace.
Meanwhile, Isack was having the complete opposite goal from yours: he needed to settle the issue with Liam before the race. Isack would try to sort it out without divulging your feelings, but he was also ready to confront Liam the second he would notice his energy getting weird. Therefore, before the driversâ parade, Isack was waiting for his teammate in the Racing Bulls motorhome.
He had chosen his timing well: every briefing had been done in the morning, and no one cared about what the drivers did during their free time. And even though he knew that no one would come bother them until it would be time to leave for the parade, Isack still decided on a somewhat secluded place upstairs.
While waiting for Liam, Isack had been pacing around the room. He had already done a dozen laps around the couch by the time he heard footsteps approaching. As Liam entered the room, Isack tried to act natural â as if his face wasnât already betraying him with how nervous he looked.
âHey Isack, you need anything?â Liam had thought it weird that Isack had asked him to meet here when they usually spent their time with some engineers before the race.
âYeah, thanks for coming. I wonât be long, but I just needed to talk to you about something.â
âSounds extremely vague and suspicious, but go on.â
âAbout yesterday evening, when I was withââ
âNo need to explain it to me,â Liam interrupted. âI know.â
âReally?â Although surprised about it, Isack had to admit that it was making his job easier if Liam hadnât misunderstood the situation. âOkay, cool. So weâre fine, then?â
âYeah, of course. Good for you, mate.â Liam patted Isack on the arm. âDidnât know that you still liked her, but Iâm happy for you two.â That wasnât completely true, but Liam didnât have much choice but to pretend.
âWait, what do you mean?â To say that Isack was lost would be an understatement. He thought that Liam and him were on the same wavelength, but they were apparently not.
âWell, you told me that youâd ask her out back then â after her second race weekend. Then, I thought you had either backed out or she had rejected you. But after yesterday, itâs obvious you actually succeeded.â
âWhat the fuck are you talking about, Liam?â
âIâm talking about you two dating?â It felt more like a question than anything, as Liam didnât understand why Isack was so confused. âI wouldâve liked you to tell me, by the way. Because now I feel like a fool after trying to flirt with her.â
âIâm not dating anyone!â Isack said. âLet alone her,â he added.
âButâ yesterday? She was in your room, all cozy. Andâ justâ you two are always hanging out, all close.â
âBro, yesterday was not a date at all. She came to my room because she needed a friend to talk to about some stuff, I told you that!â
âSorry that it looked ambiguous, then!â Liam argued.
âI canât believe she was right, though.â
âAbout what?â
âShe was scared that you would think that â that we were together â and I told her she was overreacting. She thought you wouldnât like her anymore if you believed we were dating,â Isack explained.
âWho said I liked herâŠâ Liam muttered, now avoiding eye contact.
âYou literally said two minutes ago that you flirted with her.â
âYeah, true.â
A moment of silence passed, as the atmosphere felt less heavy now.
âDoes she like me back?â Liam eventually asked.
âShe was pretty bummed at the thought of you not liking her anymore. That should tell you something.â
âI feel stupid now.â
âYou areâ, Isack said. âSo now if I offer you to come eat with us tonight, will you accept or will you escape last minute again?â
âWhat do you mean again?â
âYou make no effort, bro.â Isack sighed, not believing the amount of misunderstandings he and Liam were currently going through. âThe restaurant? Like two months ago? I introduced you to each other, but then you bailed on us not even five minutes later.â
âBecause I thought this was a date between the two of you!â Liam had to sit down. After doing so, he deeply inhaled. Closing his eyes, he then exhaled as he could already feel himself being less tense. âThe day before, you said that you would ask her out to dinner. Why would I tag along to what was literally a date.â
âIt wasnât,â Isack denied. âWhy would I tell you about it if I didnât want you to come with us? Iâm sure it was right after I told you I would introduce you to her, which I did. And then we were supposed to go to dinner, to which I asked her to come with us.â
âOh God⊠Isack, do you actually know the difference between asking and asking out?â
âItâs the same thing.â
âNo. No, itâs not.â Liam leaned back on the couch, now realising that this has all been due to Isack not knowing proper English grammar. âThe first one literally means to ask someone a question. Now, asking someone out means youâre asking them to go on a date.â
âAh⊠my bad, then.â
Okay, maybe Liam hadnât been the only one at fault; because Isack was definitely to blame as well. Now just looking at each other, the duo didnât really know what their next step would be. Isack decided to join Liam on the couch, hoping that it would help.
âDo you really like her?â Isack wondered, turning his head to look at Liam.
âYeahâ, Liam admitted. âIâve been a dick, and yet she always managed to remain professional with me. Sheâs way better at her job than I am. And sheâs kind. Did she tell you about last week? When I DNFed.â
âJust said that she comforted you a bit.â
âShe did, yeah. Sheâs a good person.â
âShe isâ, Isack agreed. âYouâre gonna ask her out, now? Like properlyâ, he specified. âNot my version.â
âIf thatâs alright with you.â
âOf course it is. As long as you never act like that with her again, and that you communicate instead of ending up with like ten misunderstandings at the same time.â
âI think I can manage that, donât worry.â
âOkay, then go.â Isack motioned to the door, signaling Liam to go talk to you before he would change his mind.
âWhat? Like now?â
âWhy not?â
âIsack, we have the parade in likeâŠâ Looking down at his watch, Liam noticed how long they had actually spent together. âFuck, we have likeâ less than five minutes before we gotta be there.â
âWhy didnât you say so sooner?!â
âBecause we were arguing!â
Now frantically leaving the room, Liam and Isack were running as they made their way outside the motorhome. While one almost tripped down the stairs, the other had barely missed falling into a plant. They were as quick as they could, and arrived breathless to the meeting point.
âWhy are you guys looking like you just ran a marathon?â Kimi wondered, before peacefully sipping his water.
âBecause we did runâ, Liam replied.
âYou didnât need to. The parade is delayed for a bit,â Ollie told them. âGeorge sent a text to the groupchat so that we didnât have to rush to get there. Thatâs why it was fine for you two to take your time.â
Both fishing out their phone from their pocket, Isack and Liam noticed that they had indeed received the information. Exchanging a glance, they just began to laugh at their shared braincell. Kimi and Ollie looked at them before looking at each other â the former Prema teammates were definitely confused.
âAre you two alright?â Kimi asked, genuinely worrying about his friends who looked like they had gone insane.
âYeah, we are. Weâll beâ, Liam said.
âIf you say so.â Kimi then went back to the conversation he had been having with Ollie before Isack and Liam had arrived, therefore leaving the two Racing Bulls drivers to catch their breath.
âŠ..
When the race was over, you were truly happy for your favourite drivers. Liam had managed to keep his starting position â P8 â while Isack had fought his way from P15 to eventually finish P10. You knew that this time, the French driver would definitely feel worthy of that single point.
Having arrived at the media pen slightly early, you took the calm surroundings as your opportunity to check your phone. You saw a text from Isack that you hadnât noticed before, and wondered how you had missed it as it had been sent right before the race. When reading its content, your expression quickly turned into one of confusion:
Tu me remercieras + tard<3
Why would you thank Isack? There was no context whatsoever, and you hated that you wouldnât be able to bring it up during your interview with him. Speaking Thinking of the devil, Isack was now entering the media pen as he sipped his water.
âBon bah câest ce que je te souhaite alors.â (Iâll wish that for you, then) Thinking of a way to subtly bring up the message he had sent, you tried to stay natural. âAutre chose Ă ajouter aprĂšs cette superbe course?â (Anything else to add after this wonderful race?) Raising an eyebrow at Isack, you hoped that he would manage to read between the lines.
You thought that you would have an opportunity to reply, but Isack simply grinned before leaving as if everything was normal. You were flabbergasted at his audacity to not acknowledge your confusion, and you turned to the cameraman in annoyance to silently ask him if he had understood anything about Isackâs attitude. He shook his head, being as lost as you.
Unfortunately, you couldnât dwell on it and had to quickly get back into your interviewer mode when Lando walked up to you. The Brit had won todayâs race, and you were glad to notice that he was particularly chirpy as he happily detailed everything good that had happened to him. Then followed another driver, and another, before you were soon enough reaching your last interview of the day.
You hated to admit it, but it truly bothered you that Liam hadnât come to you sooner. He had walked past you four times, not glancing your way even once. However, he now had no choice but to come talk to you as you were also his last interview for today. The media pen was rapidly emptying and soon enough, everyone was leaving â except for Nico Hulkenberg who was still talking to a German channel.
âLiam, so nice of you to finally join us.â
âSaved the best for last, yeah.â
âHow was your race?â Ignoring his comment, you did your best to not let it show that his words were affecting you. You hadnât expected Liam to be smooth like that, and maybe it meant that what had happened yesterday evening wasnât an issue. âYou managed to defend your position really well, especially when you had Esteban Ocon right behind you on fresher tyres. Tell me more about that.â
âYeah, that was tough. It was hard to not get caught up, especially when he had DRS. But thankfully, I also managed to get it as well towards the end when I got closer to Lewis so that really helped me.â
âSpeaking of, you boxed two laps before Hamilton. I understood that you tried to undercut him with your second stop?â
âWe did try, yeah. It wasnât the backbone of our strategy so we didnât dwell too much on it when it didnât work, but it would have been nice to get P7 because of that.â
âHow do you feel being able to compete with such a legend like Lewis Hamilton? Do you think of that when youâre right behind him on the track? Or is he just a regular guy you want to beat?â
âI donât think itâs something I focus onâ, Liam admitted. âObviously, I see the Ferrari in front of me and I know thereâs an amazing driver inside no matter which car it is. But it always seems to like, dawn on me after the races when I realise that Iâm fighting with literal champions out there.â
âMaybe someone will think that about you in several yearsâ, you suggested. âAnd there probably are some young kids watching F1 who already think that.â
âI wish.â Liam chuckled, appreciating the possibility. âDo you think of me as a champion, even just a potential one?â
âOh, hmmâŠâ Not expecting the question, it caught you off-guard as you pondered on the meaning behind it. âWell, I definitely canât deny that youâre part of the twenty best drivers in the whole world. Would it stroke your ego if I said yes?â You hadnât meant for it to sound as teasing as it did, but the words left your mouth before you could overthink them.
âComing from you? Yeah, definitely.â Liamâs tone was now more playful than ever, matching yours. However, he quickly went back to a more serious one as he remembered that your conversation was still broadcast live. âBut Iâm not there yet, I know that.â
âOne dayâ, you told him with hope in your voice. âP8 is still a great result from you today, though. So congrats for that, Liam.â
âThanks,â he said with a grateful smile.
After those last words from him, it was time to cut the camera as you had officially finished your last interview of the day. Your cameraman congratulated you for another good day of work, and you did the same before finally switching your journalist persona off.
Looking around, you quickly noticed that the media pen was literally empty as you stretched your arms. Had you really been so engrossed in your conversation with Liam that you hadnât realised you were the only ones left? As if the driver could read your thoughts, he commented out loud on it:
âGuess we did talk for a while.â
Turning around to where he was standing, your eyes met his teasing ones. Liam was leaning on the barrier separating you, which had brought him slightly closer to you.
âYeahâ, you replied. âWe should start our own podcast at this point.â
âWell, I wouldnât mind that if it meant that weâd spend more time together.â Liam took advantage of the fact you and him were currently alone to test the waters. He didnât want to come off too strong, but he also needed you to understand his intentions before he would explicitly express them.
Meanwhile, you were becoming more flustered after each word coming from Liam. Yesterday hadnât affected you that much when you two were talking â although it eventually did trouble you when you had realised what Liam had been doing â but today was different. Because you knew Liam was flirting with you, and there was no other explanation as to why he was looking at you like you were a P1 trophy. Still, you were unsure how to react and Liam sensed your hesitation.
âYou remember when we met?â Liam asked.
âOur first interview?â
âNo, later â like officially met with Isack being there.â
âYeah, what about it?â
âIâm sorry for blowing you and Isack off,â Liam apologised. He figured now was a good time to make amends with you, and to explain his point of view from back then. He thought that it would be better for the two of you to start over, before Liam would try anything with you â whether it be to start a platonic or romantic relationship.
âItâs fine, no worries.â
âItâs not,â Liam argued. âLetâs be honest, I was a total dick to you. So Iâm sorry about how I acted after that, too.â
âItâs all forgottenâ, you reassured him. You had to admit that you were now more curious than ever about what had led to him acting so cold to you, and you hoped that him currently opening up would help you get that information. âYou donât have to answer, but why were you like that? I really wished you would have told me if I had done something to upset you.â
âOh, no, it wasnât you at all!â Liam didnât want you to think that you were the one at fault, as it was the complete opposite â you had truly done nothing wrong. âYouâre gonna think itâs stupid.â
âCome on, it canât be that bad?â
âI thought you and Isack were together, or that he at least liked you. And I didnât wanna get in the wayâ, he explained.
âOkay, thatâs stupid.â You really tried not to, but you couldnât help laughing at Liamâs words. âMe and Isack, really?â
âWell, yeah? But itâs kinda his fault too, because he told me that he wanted to ask you out to dinner when he actually meant literally asking you to get dinner. So thatâs why I didnât come back then.â
âNot gonna lie, English grammar was never his forte.â
âYeah, I realised that when we talked things over earlier.â
âYou did?â You repeated.
âBefore the race, yeah, Isack and I smoothed things out â he confronted me about my shitty attitude, after we had a misunderstanding about yesterday because I had once again thought that you guys were together.â
âYou mean⊠yesterday evening?â When Liam nodded, you nervously chuckled. âI was scared that it would happen, yeah. But I can assure you, nothing has ever happened and will ever happen between us. Hell, I came to his room to talk about you.â
âReally? Isack didnât mention that.â Liam straightened up as he acknowledged the information, and he couldnât help the teasing smile making its way on his face.
âDonât get all smug about it, now. I had to mention your shitty attitude to someone, didnât I?â
âWeâre good,â you confirmed. Once again realising how much you and Liam were talking, you looked down at your watch and noticed the time. âShit, arenât you supposed to be debriefing with your team?â
âThey can waitâ, Liam shrugged off. âThough I can start making my way back to the motorhome, if youâll walk with me?â
âSureâ, you accepted. You checked your phone to see if there had been any message from your colleagues, and you sighed in relief when the only one was a text from your superior congratulating everyone for another successful weekend.
If you had told the you from only last month that she would be having flirty conversations with Liam Lawson and would then spend time with him outside of the required interviews, she wouldnât have believed you. But here you were, walking in the paddock next to him as if everything was normal. The silence between you was peaceful, but there was still an underlying tension that was only waiting to see the light of day.
When you and Liam reached the Racing Bulls motorhome, you were almost disappointed that the way there had been so short. And it seemed like Liam thought the same, because he wasnât making any move to leave you.
âWell, this is me. Thanks for walking me back.â For someone who had been strangely confident earlier, Liam now wanted to disappear from the face of the earth with how awkward he currently sounded. Get a grip, he told himself. And get the girl. However, you werenât really reacting to his words and Liam thought that maybe everything that had happened today had been enough for you. So he figured that he wouldnât try anything else for now, and that it could wait until next time â he would be seeing you soon again during the next weekend, after all. âIâll go, then. See youââ
âAre you flying out tonight?â You then blurted out, not realising you had interrupted Liam.
âWhat?â
âSorry, that was likeâ way too random. But, are you?â
âNo, I'm not. My flight is tomorrow around noon I thinkâ, he told you.
âSo youâre free tonight?â
âAs soon as the team debrief is done, and after we end up being forced to film some stuff for the socials, then yeah. Why? Wanna ask me out?â Liam was joking â although he was actually hoping that it could happen, not expecting you to positively answer.
âYeah, actually.â It made you nervous that Liam had apparently seen through you so easily, and you hoped that it wouldnât be a detriment to you. âIf you want, of course!â You then added when Liam didnât react. âI was under the impression that you were also trying to get to that, soâŠâ
âYes!â He exclaimed, which startled you from how loud he had eventually replied. âYes, yeah. Of course I want that, yes. Sorry, you beat me to it.â
âItâs fine, no worries.â You were now a blushing mess, but also definitely a happy one. âSo, dinner tonight? You and me?â
âYeah, that sounds perfect. No Isackâ, Liam stated. âJust us two.â
âNo Isackâ, you repeated with a smile.
âIsack is there right now, though.â
At the sound of another voice, you and Liam immediately looked around to find where it had come from until you realised that it had come from above. Neither of you had noticed him before, but Isack had actually been standing on the balcony of the motorhome from the beginning. When he had seen you and Liam walk back together, curiosity overtook him and he couldnât help spying on his two friends.
âHow long have you been there?â You asked, horrified at the thought of Isack having witnessed the entire conversation.
âLong enough to know that thisâ â he said while motioning between you and Liam â âcouldâve happened a long time ago.â
âWell, this is currently none of your business.â
âIt isâ, Isack claimed. âEspecially when it concerns two idiots I care about.â
âYou were also an idiot in thisâ, Liam accused. âNow, can you let us finish this conversation alone?â
âYeah, donât take too long. Briefingâs in five,â Isack told his teammate.
âOkay, now where were we?â Liam asked, focusing his full attention back on you.
âShe was asking you out to dinner,â Isack said from above. âWhich wasnât what I did with her.â
âIsack! Fuck off!â You yelled at him.
Looking at what you had in your hands before quickly shuffling through your bag, you made a choice in record time as you thought about what you could sacrifice and threw one of your notepads at Isack. You proudly grinned when the object did hit him, and your smile expanded with satisfaction when Isack then ran back inside the motorhome to avoid you throwing something else.
âNice aimâ, Liam complimented.
âThanks. Now where were we actually?â
âI recall that I was saying yes to dinner with you.â
âSounds about right,â you agreed with a nod. âText me when youâre done with your driver duties, and then weâll meet up. Weâre staying in the same hotel anyway, so, we can go from there?â
âWorks for me. Iâll bring your notepad back,â Liam offered.
âThatâll be much appreciated, thanks. See you later?â
âYeah,â Liam confirmed. âSee you laterâ, he said before reluctantly leaving you and entering the motorhome.
While you would be making your way back to the hotel to eventually get ready for your date, Liam would be impatiently waiting for his debrief to end. But before that, he had to face Isackâs smug expression when he arrived in front of the briefing room.
âDo not even startâ, Liam warned as he walked past Isack who then followed behind him into the room.
âI didnât say anything.â
âYouâre thinking so loudly that you donât need to.â
âYou are also thinking very loudly, mate.â
âOkay, then care to enlighten me about whatâs currently on my mind?â Liam crossed his arms, looking at Isack with a deadpan expression.
âYouâre thinking about your little date, obviously. I bet sheâs all you can think of,â Isack claimed.
âAbsolutely notâ, Liam tried to deny. However, the way his lips slightly turned into a smile at your mention was betraying him. âRight now, Iâm thinking about how I really want to shut you up.â
âYeah, yeah, whatever. Youâre only mad because Iâm right.â
âWhatever helps you sleep at nightâ, Liam grumbled before taking a seat next to his engineer.
Of course Liam had been thinking about you, and he had kept doing so for the entire debrief, then as well while he and Isack had recorded a video for the teamâs socials to talk about their race results.
You were still the only thing on Liamâs mind when he left the paddock and made his way back to the hotel; still when he changed out of his team kit and shuffled in his suitcase to search for some nice clothes; still when he eventually left his room to walk to yours; still when he knocked on your door and he could only think about how unreal this whole situation felt.
When you opened your door, you didnât even have time to say a word that Liam was shoving two things in front of your face. In his left hand, your precious notepad that you had thrown earlier at Isack. In his right hand, a small bouquet of your favourite flowers â Liam wouldn't admit it, but he had asked Isack for that information when he noticed the flower shop right across the street before entering the hotel.
âThatâ, you said as you took the notepad first. âI was expecting. But that?â You carefully grabbed the bouquet, trying not to focus on your fingers brushing Liamâs.
âDidnât want to come here empty-handedâ, Liam explained.
âTheyâre beautiful, thank you so much.â There wasnât a vase in your room, but you figured that the bouquet was small enough to fit in the water bottle on your nightstand. After you made sure that both items had been safely put away, you walked to Liam who was still standing in the doorway. âBut you know, there is now one advantage to you not carrying anything in your hands.â
âWhich is?â Liam stepped back in the corridor as he watched you lock your door before holding out your hand to him. He looked down at your palm facing towards him, and it took him a few seconds to realise what you wanted him to do. Not hesitating as soon as he got the memo, Liam grabbed your hand in his. âThat was smooth,â he told you. âDid you rehearse it while waiting for me?â
âNo need. Iâm a natural charmer when it comes to you now,â you teased.
âCanât deny thatâ, Liam agreed. âIâve been charmed since the day I first saw youâ, he admitted.
âAnd you still chose to back away when you thought Isack liked me?â
âWhat can I say? Iâm the best teammate heâll ever have. He should thank me for that.â
You chuckled at Liamâs words, still finding it crazy that things wouldâve never improved between the two of you without Isack clarifying the situation to Liam.
âThat reminds me, Isack texted me earlier that I should be thanking him later. Now it makes sense.â
Even if Isackâs lack of fluency in English had unfortunately been the trigger to months of misunderstandings, you had to admit it was still thanks to him that the issue had eventually been solved and that you could now finally get that long-awaited dinner with Liam. Speaking of, you were now realising that you had no idea where Liam was taking you as the two of you were currently walking under the streetlights. You didnât mind it, though, and settled for looking at the scenery around you while wandering hand in hand with Liam.
âDonât do it, though. Or else itâll get to his head. We canât have him know that he succeeded.â
âTrueâ, you agreed. âBut itâll be hard to ignore him if he expects it, because Iâm certain heâll text me as soon as he sees my location being back at the hotel. Hell, heâd even be capable of waiting in front of my door.â
âIâm already regretting getting involved with you if it means that Isack will be even more present than beforeâ, Liam complained with a groan. âThat guy has no boundaries.â
âWeâre a package, sorry. You wouldnât be able to avoid him even if I wasnât in the picture, though â unless you changed teams.â
âSounds like a hassle. Guess I have no choice but to go through with this date, now.â
âSeems like a nightmare, doesnât it?â
âRight? I hope I at least get to kiss the girl before the night ends,â Liam joked. âOr itâll have all been for nothing.â
âI donât think sheâll be opposed to that.â Despite the blush settling on your cheeks, you didnât necessarily feel embarrassed. This little back-and-forth teasing with Liam was surprisingly fun, and you knew that it was because being with him made you feel at ease. âI just hope the guy is a good kisser, then.â
âHeâd like to think he is, indeed.â
You stopped walking â hand still in Liamâs â and decided to lean on a low wall beside you before you sent a challenging look to Liam.
âAny chance I can be sure of it before being with him in the long-term?â
âThe only solution is a free trial, and then you can decide if the product is good enough for you.â
âI guess that works for me.â
You hadnât realised how much Liam had gotten closer to you, but the gap between the two of you was now smaller than ever. He glanced down at your lips, before his eyes went back to look into yours.
âCan I kiss you, then?â His voice was barely a murmur, not wanting to ruin the moment.
âSureâ, you replied with a voice as low as his.
Liam leaned in, and you could feel his breath on your lips. He looked into your eyes one last time, and you nodded at his last wish of confirmation from you. And then, he kissed you. However, Liam soon realised that he wasnât actually kissing your lips. He slowly pulled back, and saw that your cheek was now facing him. His expression turned into one of confusion, before he noticed the smirk on your lips â the lips he wished he could have been kissing.
âReally?â Liam scoffed, not having expected you to pull this move.
âYeah, buy me dinner first. Do you not have any manners to try and kiss a woman before taking her out?â
âYou saidâ I asked if I could kiss you and you said yes!â Liam reminded you of the conversation from barely two minutes ago.
âNever specified where, though.â
And while Liamâs face was now harbouring a dumbfounded expression, you winked at him before starting to walk again. Because you were still holding hands with him, he had no choice but to trail behind you as you giggled. He couldnât even be mad at you, not when you turned around to face him with a bright smile while looking absolutely breathtaking under the moonlight.
Liam eventually caught up to your pace and went back to walking beside you before he announced that the two of you were arriving at the restaurant he had booked for your date. Even though you had been the one to ask him out, Liam had eventually texted you to tell you he already had the perfect place in mind for tonight.
And perfect it was. Not only the restaurant, but the date as a whole. Liam had been nothing if not a gentleman â holding the door for you, pulling your chair back, refilling your glass as soon as it was getting empty. The food had been amazing, and it was probably the best date youâd ever had â mostly due to the company.
After sharing a dessert, Liam didnât hesitate paying the bill before you could even notice that a waiter had brought it. He pulled your chair again when you stood from the table, and held the door for you before leaving the restaurant.
The air outside wasnât cold, but you could still feel an underlying chill in the breeze. You didnât even shiver, nor did goosebumps have time to appear on your arms. And yet, Liam was immediately putting his jacket on your shoulders as if it was second nature.
âSeemed like you were ready for this from the beginning,â, you teased before adjusting the jacket to cover your arms. You were quickly feeling warmer, and you could only be grateful for Liamâs awareness.
âI was born to be at your service, thatâs all.â
âCareful, or Iâll be exploiting you before weâre even back to the hotel.â
âWouldnât have it any other way,â Liam replied before taking your hand in yours as if he couldnât survive without having some sort of physical contact with you.
The walk back to the hotel was quiet. There werenât many people outside by that time, which made for a peaceful atmosphere surrounding you and Liam. The silence between you was comfortable, only interrupted from time to time by chuckles from either of you as you kept stealing glances at each other.
When you arrived at the hotel, Liam insisted on walking you to your door. Without thinking twice, you invited Liam into your room once you were in front of it. Not because you were expecting anything more than a kiss or two â you actually still owed it to Liam from the stunt you had pulled earlier, but simply because you didnât want tonight to end yet.
The warmth you felt as soon as you entered your room was welcoming, and you were almost disappointed when it forced you to remove Liamâs jacket. You put it on the back of the chair, before joining Liam who had made his way to the balcony.
âYour viewâs way better than mineâ, Liam said once you were by his side. âIsack was the one to get the good room while Iâm stuck with the back yard.â
âI could always offer you to stay here.â
âNah, itâll have to wait âtill the fifth date at least.â
âGood to know, Iâll remember it. What am I allowed to offer after the first date, then?â
âWell, Iâm still waiting on that kiss from earlier. Any chance I could have it now?â
âSeems like your lucky day. Thereâs currently a promotion: two kisses for the price of one.â
âThatâs a really good deal, indeed.â
This time, when Liam leaned in, you didnât turn away from him. You just slightly tilted your head when his lips touched yours, therefore allowing the kiss to slowly deepen. It was soft, and gentle. It was everything you could have expected from a guy like Liam.
When you both pulled back, you still stayed close. During the kiss, Liamâs hands had come to hold your waist while yours were currently resting on his chest.
âI guess that I can now confirm the guy is indeed a good kisser,â you said in reference to your conversation from earlier.
âSatisfied enough to consider long-term with him, then?â
âYep,â you confirmed with a nod.
Things felt easy with Liam. It really looked like your relationship would be one based on banter, and you were truly excited to keep this dynamic going between the two of you.
You noticed that Liam was about to add something, when a knock interrupted him before he could get a word out. Glancing at the door, then at Liam, your eyes widened when you realised who it probably â definitely â was.
âDonât tell meâŠ?â Liam asked, really hoping that it wasnât true.
âStay there, give me two minutes.â
Walking to the door like a woman on a mission, you sharply inhaled before opening it. And as you had expected, Isack Hadjar was now standing in front of you with an innocent smile.
âIsack, what the fuck youâre doing here?â
âWeâre doing this in English?â He raised an eyebrow at you, ignoring your question. âDoes that mean that Liam is here?â Isack tried to peek inside your room, but he was prevented from doing so as you were now blocking his view.
âJust answer.â
âI saw your location,â he explained as if it was obvious. âAnd I saw you coming back from my window.â
âNot creepy at all.â
âIâm just invested,â he said with a shrug. âSo, how was it?â
âIâm not telling you anythingâ, you argued.
âWhy not?â Isack whined. âAt least tell me if he was nice to you, if he paid the bill, if I donât have to threaten him, if you kissedâŠ?
âI hate youâ. You sighed, before accepting your fate and figuring that you needed to give him a few details if you wanted him to leave you alone. âYes, he was the nicest ever; he did pay the bill; and no, please donât threaten to drive him off track or some shit like that.â
âAnd did yââ Isack tried to ask again, as you had avoided the only question that had mattered to him.
âI donât kiss and tellâ, you said with a sarcastic smile before closing the door in Isackâs face. You then turned to Liam â who had come back inside during your conversation with Isack, before bursting out laughing. âOh my God, can you believe it?â
âI wish I could be surprised that he stalked your location all night, but Iâm actually not.â
âHeâs insane. I love him, but heâs insane.â
âGuess weâll have to get used to this added chaos, now.â
âHe was always chaotic, this isnât new. He was already a menace back in kartingâ, you told Liam.
âIâm not even surprised. Though Iâm scared to go outside, now. Do you think heâs still there?â
âShould be fine,â you assumed. âHe might have stayed like thirty seconds then left thinking that I was telling the truth when I denied your presence.â
After waiting five more minutes, you and Liam deemed it safe for him to leave your room. He opened the door, stepping out in the corridor without his eyes looking away from yours.
âSame time next week?â You asked with an expectant smile. If post-race date nights with Liam could become a new part of your routine, then who were you to complain about it?
âSame time next week,â Liam confirmed before he gently kissed you again â he still had that one free kiss you had promised him and he wasnât going to leave without getting it.
When you pulled back, you could only feel giddy from all the emotions you had felt today until now. Liam wasnât any better, and he knew he would be missing you and your lips like crazy until the next race weekend.
While you two were too busy gazing into each otherâs years, someone hadnât missed a thing.
âI knew it!â was what Isack exclaimed as he now had the answer to the question you had avoided earlier.
âFuckâ, you and Liam both said with a sigh.
Isack was definitely not leaving either of you alone, now.

The first time you called Liam âgood boyâ, it was an innocent joke. You had seen his reaction on the VCARB instagram, the way the gears turned in his head as he processed those two words. You couldâve sworn there was the faintest hint of blush seeping into his face, a nervous laugh escaping him as the video ended. You had filed that incident under the âfurther investigation neededâ folder in your brain - Liam had always been cagey about what he liked in the bedroom, wanting to focus on you, solely on you. But this? This was the perfect ammunition to open up a conversation. Underneath his bashfulness, he always preened under praise and compliments. You had a hunch, and admin had fueled the fire.
It was a nice, relaxing day off for the both of you - there was a week between races, so you had decided to binge your favorite TV series. Youâd already seen it three times over, but Liam only caught bits and pieces, so a rainy day was perfect for staying in and snuggling on the couch. Your legs were draped over his lap, scrolling on your phone while he watched your show of choice. As you scrolled, that video popped up once again, the faintest of smirks encroaching on your face.
âWhatâs that about? See something funny?â Liam muses, a hand gently rubbing your calf as he lazes about.Â
âMmm, you could say that.â Your boyfriend raises an eyebrow, head leaned against the back of the couch as he examines you.Â
âWell, no need to be tightlipped about it, then.â
âYou sure you wanna know?â
âWhatâs that supposed to mean? Oh, god, itâs not one of the VCARB shorts, is it?â
âYouâre moving in the right direction.â
âWhich one?â He laughed, passing a hand over his face. They were always making him do stupid shit.
âThe one where they call you⊠good boy.â
âOh, Christ-â He immediately squirms a bit, shaking his head and struggling to appear nonchalant. âYeah, that was dumb.â
âWas it? Are you so sure about that?â
âWhat do you mean?â
âI think you liked it. Do you like being called a good boy?â
âN- no, shut up!â Liam moved to get up, but you were faster. Before either of you could process anything, you were straddling his lap, looking down at him with a near-evil grin. âBabe-â
âWhat? Câmon, your reaction told me something different. I think you like being called a good boy.â The protest he was forming dies on his lips, and you feel him melt ever so slightly under you. You leaned forward, capturing his lips in your own, a hand threading through his hair and tugging gently. This earned a gasp from him, causing you to pull back with a smirk.
âWhatâs that? Does my good boy like having his hair pulled?â A breathy whine escapes your boyfriend, and you tug again, punctuated with a roll of your hips against him. He was already getting hard.
âOh, sweet boy. Use your words.â
âChrist-â He barely chokes out, face flushed beautifully. The next words you could only faintly hear.
âSpeak up, baby. Donât go mumbling on me here.â
âWanna⊠be your⊠good boy,â the last two words fell from his lips, and you were in heaven. That was all you needed. Your hands dropped to his lap and began fumbling with his shorts, relishing in the gasp escaping your boyfriend as your warm hand met his cock.
âWhatâre-â You leaned in and captured his lips in your own, sloppily making out with him as you gave him a light squeeze. However, as soon as his hands touched you, you pulled back.
âAh, none of that. Hands to yourself.â
âWhat?!â
âIâm taking care of you,â you leaned in closer to nip at his earlobe. âSo be a good boy, and keep those hands next to you, or Iâll have to tie you up.â Oh, the way his cock twitched so deliciously almost made you feral.
âJesus, babe, I-â His face was beautifully flushed, lips parted and pupils blown wide as he looked up at you. God, heâs beautiful. Your free hand trails up his torso to rest lightly on his jaw while you loosely, slowly jerk him off, feeling him slowly getting harder by the second. His hands flex beside him, fingers digging into the soft cushions.Â
âMmm? Feels good?â Liam struggles to hold back a groan, your eyes narrowing. Your hand grips his jaw lightly, your thumb brushing against his lips. They parted almost immediately, eyes fluttering. âDonât want to answer? Guess Iâll have to otherwise occupy this mouth, then. But be a good boy, and keep your eyes on me. If you canât do that, wellâŠâ You trail off, pushing your digit past his full lips, feeling his mouth eagerly wrap around you. âIâll have to take matters further into my own hands.â A whine tears itself out from Liamâs chest, his beautiful blue eyes locking with yours, a simple look of desperation decorating his face. His hips buck up into your hand, and you push down on his tongue, gripping him tighter as you force your finger deeper into his mouth.Â
âKeep those hips still. I know itâs hard, sweet boy, but be good for me, okay?â You cooed, gripping his dick ever so slightly tighter as you sped up the pace. He moans at your words, muscled arms trembling with the effort it takes to keep him from grabbing at your body, your clothes, anything to keep him anchored as you continue to pleasure him. You canât help but let out a soft moan of your own, feeling yourself grind your own hips down against his lap. He sucked so obediently on your thumb as you gripped his jaw, feeling his stubble rub against your palm. His hips twitched involuntarily, eyes pleading with you not to stop as he fought to keep control over his body while you jerked him off, twisting your hand with every stroke.Â
âAw, look at those desperate eyes, baby boy. You like when I take care of you?â He barely manages a nod, a whine escaping him when you remove your thumb from his mouth, a trail of saliva connecting you two. âGo ahead, use your words.â
âFuck,â he pants, head dropping back against the headrest. âPlease, babe, godâŠâ
âCâmon, I know you can do better than that,â You punctuated your words by moving a bit quicker again, relishing in the heavy throb from his cock.
âPlease, please, makinâ me feel so good, want more, want you, please let me touch you, please baby, pleaseâŠâÂ
âAww, look at that, what a good boy for me! Youâre doing so well, keeping so still even though you want to fuck up into my hand. I suppose I could be nice and let you touch me,â you hummed, watching his hands twitch and lift from the couch slightly at the thought. âGo ahead, baby.â Liam did not delay, his hands flying to your hips and gripping tightly, a low moan escaping him as he pulled you closer. His lips found yours and trapped you in an eager, passionate kiss, his head positively swimming with pleasure. Breathy pleas escaped him between your lips, desperately clinging to you as he grew ever closer. As his desperation mounted, you smiled against him, timing yourself perfectly.
âBabe- I⊠fuck, please, gettinâ close, gonna-â And with that, you pulled your hand back, letting his cock smack against his stomach as his eyes flew open, a pathetic whine spilling from him. âWh- nononono, please, please, oh my god!â
âAh ah, I told you Iâm taking care of you. Iâm not ready for you to come yet. Relax, sweetheart,â you lean forwards, kissing his neck as you feel his hips buck, desperate for friction as his orgasm fades, Liam letting out breathy whimpers as he squeezes his eyes shut. You vaguely register the steel grip he has on your hips - that was definitely going to leave a mark tomorrow morning. You can feel his control wavering, desperation begging to override his want to be good for you.Â
âPlease,â he whispers the word hoarsely, like a prayer, chest heaving with desire. It almost makes you moan, seeing him like this, heat shooting right to your core.Â
âOh, god, how can I deny you?â You mumble against his neck, hand returning to his member as you resume pumping him in your fist, desperate to make him cum now. âSo pretty, so good for me, such a good boyâŠâÂ
Liam jolts as you start again, mouth practically hanging open as his head swims with pleasure, one hand dropping to squeeze at the meat of your thigh, the other pushing under your shirt to splay across the small of your back, pulling you ever closer to him. His hips buck shamelessly now, drawing moans out of you as it builds friction in your jeans.Â
âG-God, fuck, please baby, pleaseâŠâÂ
âGonna cum, baby? Gonna be a good boy and cum for me?â
âYes, yes, yes,â he chants, âOh, God, please, please let me cum for you, wanna be good for you!â
âGo ahead, then. Let me take care of you. Be good for me. Cum.â Thatâs all it takes, his breath quickening as his fingertips dig into you, feeling his cock pulse in your grip as he plummets from the edge, wanton groans escaping him that the neighbors will definitely hear. You feel the warmth of his cum spill over your fingers as you continue stroking him through his orgasm, unable to help yourself as you bite down on the crook of his neck, grinding your hips down against him. Slowly but surely, he comes down from his high, jerking a bit as you give him a few final pumps of his overly sensitive head, his eyes fluttering as he struggles to catch his breath. You hum against him, pressing gentle kisses against the red mark you left on his neck.Â
âHah⊠fuckâŠâ He manages out a weak chuckle, hands moving to rub soothing circles against your skin, as if in apology for gripping you too tightly. âShit.â
âYou okay, baby?â
âAm I okay?â Liam asks incredulously, a grin on his face as he laughs again, gently pushing you back so you can look at him. âFuck, babe, Iâm more than okay.â You giggle, pushing a few sweaty strands of hair out of his face.Â
âGood. I knew you were a good boy.â He canât help but to roll his eyes, the smallest noise of protest escaping him. âOh, you canât hide it from me anymore!â
âMaybe not. ButâŠâ
âBut what?â
âMaybe youâll let your good boy take care of you now?â

As you approached your one-year anniversary with Liam, there seemed to be a shift in energy between the two of you. It wasnât bad in any way; you just both knew that there was something that needed to be discussed between the two of you.
And that was the question of moving in with each other.
You both practically spend most of your time bouncing between Liamâs flat and yours; you just hadnât had the conversation of who was going to move in with who or if you were going to move somewhere else entirely. Truthfully, you hoped that Liam wouldnât want to move anywhere else. You knew it was selfish to think so, but you had made so much of a life for yourself in London. Your job was here, your friends were here, your life was here, and you werenât sure you were ready to potentially give it all up.
âHey, babe.â Liamâs words shook you from your thoughts as you glanced over at him with a small smile.
âHey, Liam,â you reply, getting up from your seat and crossing to him. You embrace him happily before giving him a soft kiss, bringing a smile to his lips that quickly falters the moment he pulls away enough to see your face properly.
âYouâve got your thinking face on. Whatâs happened?â Liam asks, immediately discarding his bag on the floor and resting his hands on your hips, his eyes searching yours.
âIâve just been thinking about our futureâŠâ You mumble, your gaze dropping briefly before looking up at Liam, seeing how he attempts to hide his concern in his expression.
âYouâre not breaking up with me, are you?â he asks, his eyes desperately searching for any confirmation to his question.
âNo! I- no. Iâve just been thinking about stuff. Like⊠moving in together,â you say, suddenly shy as your hands slip down to rest atop Liamâs, feeling his fingers thread in between yours.
âMoving in? Funny story, Iâve been thinking about it too,â Liam admits with a small chuckle, making you tilt your head slightly.
âReally?â
âYep. I mean, weâve been together almost a year now. I want to be able to come home to you after a race weekend. I donât want to have to travel between two places. I want a place to call our own,â Liam says, holding your hands lightly in his own.
âYou want that to happen? Us having a place together?â you question quietly.
âOf course I do. I can just picture it, a place for us in Monaco, a beautiful view of the marina every morning for us to watch while we start our days.â
âThat sounds- wait⊠Monaco?â You furrow your eyebrows at Liamâs words.
âYes. Monaco. It makes the most sense, doesnât it? Most of the drivers live there. We can find a place near Landoâs so you can see him as often as you like.â
âHold on. You want us to move to Monaco?â
âWell, yes. Like I said, most of the guys live out there. You can see Lando often and-â
âBut what about my job? I can hardly just drop it to move across Europe.â
âYou donât want to move to Monaco?â Liam questions, taking a step back, releasing your hands.
âItâs just- Iâve worked really hard to get to where I am now. London is where everything is. My job. My friends. I just donât know if I can leave this all behind,â you say, your arms winding around your middle as you picture leaving everything behind.
âBut, Lando lives in Monaco. I thought youâd be happy to live near him so you could see him more often.â
âLandoâs got more than enough money to fly over here when he wants to visit. And he does make the effort to visit when he can. I donât need to live right on his doorstep just to prove we get on,â you argue, your tone attempting to stay calm as Liam scoffs.
âI was thinking of both of us when I thought of this. Itâs a nice place to live. Iâve already found a few places for us to look at, or you can find some youâd like to look at. Iâm sure you could find a new job out there. You donât even need a job if you donât want one. Iâm sure I can provide for both of us.â Liamâs argument made your jaw clench.
âLiam, I donât want to give up my career. Iâve worked my ass off for this. The people who follow Formula One only know me as Lando Norrisâ little sister or Liam Lawsonâs girlfriend. I need something for myself, and my job is everything to me. It gives me something thatâs my own. Not my brotherâs. Not my boyfriendâs. Mine.â You couldnât bring yourself to look Liam in the eye as you spoke, your gaze dipping to the floor.
âBut I just said-â
âYes. I know what you said. I- I just donât know if I want to leave here. Itâs home. Youâre already gone most of the year, I donât really want to be somewhere unfamiliar when youâre not around,â you argue weakly as Liam huffs slightly, running a frustrated hand through his hair.
âIâm thinking about whatâs best for both of us.â
âBut being nothing but a girl hanging off your arm at every grand prix isnât what I want. I enjoy going to the occasional race, of course, I do. But the fans will-â
âYou care that much about what fans think? Youâre really embarrassed to be seen with me?â Liam fires your direction, making you shake your head fervently.
âNo, Iâm not embarrassed, of course, Iâm not. I love you so much. But I just donât know if me dropping my job to follow you around the world or sit alone in some fancy flat in Monaco is the best idea.â
âThen you can find a new job. It surely wonât be difficult for you to find another job out there if you really donât want to follow me around the world all year long,â Liam argues, his frustration becoming more and more evident by the second.
âLiam. Donât take that the wrong way, you know thatâs not what I meant. Look, maybe we need to have a genuine think about what we both want,â you say as Liam lets out a bitter laugh.
âMaybe youâre right. Maybe weâre even trying to jump into this too soon. You know what? I just need some time and space away from you right now.â Liamâs words were sharp as he picked up his bag, turning towards the door.
âLiam, wait, you donât have to-â you cut yourself off as he opens the door, barely glancing back at you as he leaves, slamming the door closed behind him as you flinch slightly, your eyes quickly welling with tears.
âFuck. Fuck. Fuck,â you scold yourself angrily, your hands gripping at your hair as you stumble back onto the sofa. You pull your knees up to your chest as tears begin to roll down your cheeks. All you could think of was the way Liam barely looked at you before he left your flat, the way he said he needed to be away from you.
âHello?â Landoâs voice shook you from your thoughts as you blinked, completely unaware that in your anguish, youâd somehow picked up your phone and dialled your brother.
ây/n/n? You there?â Landoâs voice comes through the phone again as you finally bring yourself back to reality, noticing the sounds of conversation and laughter in the background.
âLando, Iâm sorry, I didnât mean to- Iâll go,â you stammer quickly, missing how your voice cracked while Landoâs eyebrows furrowed with concern.
âNo, y/n, whatâs wron-â Lando is cut off by the call ending, making him pull his phone away from his ear and stare at your contact, the picture he had taken of you once at a birthday party staring back at him tauntingly. He could tell from your voice that you were crying, and while he didnât know what the cause of it was, he wasnât going to just sit around and wait for an answer; he was going to be there for you.
âLando, you okay, mate?â Max asks, leaning in the doorway, noticing his friendâs expression.
âItâs y/n, I gotta go.â Landoâs slight panic was enough to make Maxâs eyes widen slightly as he pushed away from the doorframe, approaching his friend.
âLando. Go. Donât worry about this. If you need anything, shoot me a message, okay?â Max says softly, reaching over to squeeze Landoâs shoulder, the two friends sharing a look of concern before Lando nods.
âTell P Iâm sorry and that the dinner was great, yeah? Iâll make it up to you guys, promise,â Lando says hurriedly, digging into his pocket for his car keys.
âDonât worry about it, mate. We understand. Weâll just hang out another time. Thereâs enough people round, our get-together isnât going to fall apart without you,â Max laughs softly as Lando scoffs lightly.
âDonât call me crying when it does.â Lando manages to laugh.
âAlright, get out of here, go and check on y/n for us both, okay?â Max says, his seriousness returning as Lando nods, thanking Max quietly before making his way out of Maxâs flat, drawing no further attention to himself as he slips away.
Back at your flat, you were still curled up on the sofa, the tears still relentlessly falling down your cheeks. Even as you harshly scrubbed at your cheeks with your hoodie sleeve, the tears continued to fall.
You donât know how long you were sitting there sobbing, but soon there was a sharp rap at your door, making your head shoot up as you waited for a painful minute before there was another knock.
You get to your feet, crossing tentatively to the door, wiping harshly at your eyes once more before opening the door, shocked to see Lando on the other side, his hair unruly like heâd run his hand through it anxiously one too many times, and a takeaway bag in hand.
âLando, what are you doing here?â you question, instinctively stepping back to let him in as he takes in your expression, frowning when he sees your red-rimmed eyes.
âWhatâs wrong? And donât lie to me. I could tell over the phone that you were upset,â Lando says, moving to the kitchen and placing the bag down on the island.
âItâs nothing, Lando. Iâm fine.â You attempt to lie, but the wobble in your voice gives you away as Lando lifts his gaze to meet yours. His eyes held no anger towards you for your attempted lie, but concern for your well-being.
âI just want to help. Iâm your brother, itâs my job, right?â Lando asks, keeping a lightness to his tone to encourage you to open up. You fall silent for a moment, biting your lip as a tear rolls down your cheek.
âI think I fucked everything up with Liam.â You manage to say, your voice cracking as more tears roll down your cheeks.
In an instant, the food was abandoned, and Lando was gathering you up in his arms, holding you close while you sobbed into his hoodie, clinging to him like heâd disappear if you let go.
âI got you, y/n/n. Iâm not going anywhere,â Lando says assuringly, gently guiding you to the living room to sit you down on the sofa as you curl even closer to him. Lando doesnât let go; he just holds you as you sob, whispering soft words of comfort until you calm down enough to speak. Even once your breathing had evened out, he didnât force you to speak; he just continued to hold you until you were ready.
âI messed up,â you force out, your face still buried in your brotherâs shoulder.
âIâm sure you didnât. Tell me what happened and we can work it out, okay?â Lando says assuringly, his hand rubbing up and down your back. You carefully pull away from your brotherâs embrace, pulling your hoodie sleeves over your hands to wipe at your tears, swallowing thickly before speaking.
âWeâve been dancing around the idea of moving in with each other for a while now, and I decided to try asking about it. I didnât see the point in us avoiding it any more, and when we talked about it, Liam mentioned maybe moving to Monaco, and I donât want that. I just donât want to leave my job and my life behind. He didnât take it well, and we argued before he stormed out. He thought I was embarrassed by him, Lan.â You manage to say, a few more fresh tears dribbling down your cheeks.
âWhy would he think that?â Lando asks carefully, trying to make sense of what happened.
âHe mentioned me leaving my job to move to Monaco with him. Said something about how he thinks he can provide for us both, so I could just not have a job if I wanted, or just find a new one. But I love my job. Itâs my job. Itâs something that I can have for myself when most of the world just sees me as your sister or his girlfriend,â you say, watching as Landoâs expression shifted, becoming more serious.
âHe what? He wanted you to just drop your job? He doesnât get to make demands like that of you. You worked so hard for your job,â Lando says, his jaw clenched in anger as if he was watching the conversation play out right in front of him.
âBut what if heâs right? Monaco is where you all live. It would be better for him,â you say, nibbling at your bottom lip.
âBut it wouldnât be better for you, would it?â Landoâs question was quiet as he studied you.
âI donât know. I donât really like the idea of moving to another country. I love London. My friends are here. Everything Iâve ever known is here in England. You visit when you can, so you never feel far away. I donât want to spend my life following after Liam or sitting alone in Monaco. Thatâs not who I am,â you say, picking at the fluff on your hoodie sleeve, desperate to avoid eye contact with your brother.
âThen he should respect that. You donât owe him something like moving to another country if youâre not comfortable with it, okay?â Lando says, his words encouraging you to look back at him.
âBut-â
âHey, no buts. Your thoughts and feelings are just as real as his. He shouldâve listened to you so you could both figure out a solution. I do think that you should try talking to him in the future. But you donât have to do it soon if youâre not up to it,â Lando says softly, his hand resting on your shoulder as he squeezes it softly.
âHow are you so good at this?â you ask as Lando tugs you into another embrace.
âIâve got some people around me who are pretty good at giving advice, and I listen to them. Plus, I canât just sit by when my little sister is crying over a guy of all things,â Lando says, smiling to himself when he hears a small, breathy laugh escape your lips.
âLook, put a movie on or something. Iâm gonna grab that food because if I know you as well as I think I do, you havenât eaten at all yet, have you?â Lando asks, pulling away enough to look down at you as you dip your head in embarrassment.
âNoâŠâ You mumble.
âSee? I know you so well. Stay here. Iâll sort the food out,â Lando instructs with a small smile, gently untangling you from his arms and standing up, disappearing into the kitchen while you scroll through Netflix. You end up choosing a movie you loved, one you knew inside out, and had a happy ending.
âFoodâs here!â Lando announces proudly as he enters the living room, a plate of your favourite food in hand. You reach out to take the food, stopping when he pulls the plate out of reach with a grin.
âAh, whatâs the magic words?â he asks as you playfully roll your eyes.
âThank you, Lando,â you say, gesturing for him to hand you the food as he purses his lips in thought.
âWhose your favourite brother?â Lando then asks, continuing to tease you as you groan, your head dropping back against the sofa cushions.
âYouâre not going to let me say Ollie, are you?â
âAbsolutely not. Now, if you want your food, you gotta answer the question,â Lando says, eyebrow raised as you roll your eyes again.
âFine. Youâre my favourite brother,â you concede, holding your hand out expectantly as Lando hands you the plate with a dramatic flourish.
âI will be holding this over Ollieâs head, by the way. You canât take it back now that youâve said it,â Lando grins, settling down alongside you as you laugh.
âI donât think it was ever a secret that you were my favourite, though,â you say, glancing briefly at Lando before digging into your food.
âWell, donât tell the others. But youâre my favourite too,â Lando says in an exaggerated whisper, nudging you with his shoulder like he was telling you a big secret.
You knew what Lando was doing. He was joking around to distract you from what had happened. To make sure you werenât dwelling on the specifics of the argument or getting dragged into a spiral of âwhat ifsâ. Lando always understood you in a way that many didnât. He knew that once youâd talked things out, you wanted to stay distracted until whatever was bothering you was either resolved or you had moved on. You appreciated his efforts. It was his way of showing how much he cared about you, and you were grateful to have him in your life, even if he did wind you up sometimes.
You ate your food quietly, occasionally exchanging jokes with Lando as you watched the movie, falling back into the familiar routine the two of you fell into when you were together. With Landoâs infectious presence, you had almost forgotten what it was that had got you so upset in the first place.
When you finished eating, you placed your now-empty plate on the coffee table and stretched as a yawn slipped past your lips.
âYou should get some sleep,â Lando comments as he notices your yawn, already reaching out to tidy your plate away.
âLando, come on, I can do that,â you argue, reaching out for the plate as Lando swats your hand away.
âNope. Not your responsibility right now. You just need to go and get some sleep, okay?â Lando says, glancing at you pointedly as you slump back against the sofa.
âOkay, Mum,â you say as Lando scoffs lightly, not taking offence at your snark.
âWhat happened to me being your favourite brother?â Lando jokes.
âYou can be my favourite brother and still act like Mum,â you retort with an innocent grin as Lando laughs with a shrug.
You stay put on the sofa while Lando tidies everything away, only shifting when he returns, standing up as another yawn slips past your lips, not missing how he folded his arms across his chest, giving you a pointed look.
âIâm going. Iâm going,â you concede, no longer willing to fight like a child trying to stay up past their bedtime.
âYou mind if I crash here for the night?â Lando asks as you nod.
âOf course, you can. I havenât got the guest bedroom set up, though. I can go and do it now,â you say, getting ready to excuse yourself before Lando stops you.
âNo, donât stress. Iâll crash on the sofa,â Lando assures, his voice calm to avoid stressing you any further.
âIâve got some clothes you can borrow. Itâs either stuff Iâve stolen from you or⊠Liam,â you say, your gaze dipping to the floor at the mere mention of Liam.
âYouâve been stealing my stuff? Damn, maybe Iâll steal it back,â Lando jokes with a laugh, deploying his usual tactic of messing around to cheer you up.
âCalm down, itâs not like I stole anything you donât already have thousands of,â you say, turning the tv off before disappearing into your bedroom, soon emerging with a pair of sweatpants and an old t-shirt, handing them over with a smile.
âSo, thatâs where this shirt went. Iâve missed it so much,â Lando exaggerates, holding the shirt up as if it were a priceless relic. It was one Lando had lent to you when you spent a night at his, and instead of returning it before you left, you stole the shirt.
âYou never asked for it back; it couldnât have been that important to you,â you laugh as Lando admires the shirt with exaggerated awe.
âI might just have to steal it back now,â Lando grins, laughing with you before you both fall silent.
âIâll leave you to it then. Thereâs spare toothbrushes and stuff in the bathroom, you know where it all is. Good night, Lan. Thank you for everything today,â you say gratefully, smiling softly at your brother as he nods.
âYou donât need to thank me. Iâm here for you, always,â Lando replies, bringing you into a quick hug before whispering a quiet âgood nightâ to you before letting go, watching as you disappear down the hall into your room.
You enter your room, feeling a shift in the environment. Your room felt devoid of warmth. The bed is tauntingly large as you stare at it. Liam was everywhere you looked. The side of the bed he usually occupied. Some of his belongings still scattered on the bedside table. His guitar propped up by the window, reminding you of the evenings heâd sit cross-legged on the bed with the guitar in his lap, plucking at the strings, and singing quietly in a moment just for the two of you. You were always curled up in the bed beside him, eyes closed as you listened to his soft singing, often falling asleep to the sound of his voice.
You slowly get ready to go to sleep, clambering into the large bed, choosing to curl up on Liamâs side of the bed instead of the side you usually slept on. You tugged Liamâs pillow to your chest, the faint smell of his cologne and shampoo a cruel taunt as tears filled your eyes. You hated arguing with people you loved. And arguing with Liam felt so much worse than you could have anticipated. You had no idea if he was going to decide that he didnât want the relationship anymore. Endless scenarios of Liam ending your relationship swirled in your brain as you buried your face in the pillow to try to slow your sobs, eventually drifting to sleep with Liamâs pillow clutched to your chest.
Lando was the first to wake up the next morning, the sunlight filtering through the blinds as he stretched before sitting up. He heads to the bathroom to freshen up, taking advantage of the toiletries left by Liam before changing back into his clothes from yesterday, throwing the clothes he used as pyjamas into your washing basket, before heading back into the living room to tidy up after sleeping on the sofa.
Just as Lando was finishing tidying up the living room, he heard a tentative knock on the door that made him straighten up instantly, his eyebrows furrowing at who could possibly be outside the door. He quickly placed the folded-up blanket on the arm of the sofa before crossing to the door.
When he opened the door and saw Liam on the other side, it was like a switch had been flipped. His once loose posture immediately became rigid. His entire body was tightening like a snake poised to strike as his arms quickly folded across his chest, his expression darkening as he straightened his back in an attempt to seem taller.
âWhat do you want?â Lando asks. His voice was deadly calm, but Liam could hear the venom underneath.
âI wanted to check on y/n. To talk to her,â Liam answers. He had no doubt in his mind that you had told Lando everything; his reaction when answering the door was enough of a telltale sign.
âYouâve got a lot of fucking nerve,â Lando growls, drawing himself up impossibly taller, his jaw clenched. It was this look that made Liam realise how incredibly fucked he was. This expression was one Liam had never seen before, but he knew he was deserving of it.
âI know. I went back to my place and spent the whole night beating myself up about it,â Liam begins as Lando scoffs.
âGood. You hurt her. You really fucking hurt her,â Lando says angrily, refusing to move, a wall between Liam and the inside of your flat.
âI know I did. I was just upset because-â
âI know why you were upset. You felt like she wasnât appreciating your efforts, so you turned it around on her. You accused her of being embarrassed of you.â Landoâs words made Liamâs head dip in shame.
âI know.â
âThis is y/n weâre talking about. She canât shut up about you since you went public. Sheâs the same woman who flew out to see you race in Singapore and was there for you both times you crashed. She didnât care about the cameras or the people. She cared about you. She always has. You could never embarrass her, even if you drove around the track in reverse; sheâd still think the world of you,â Lando says, his stare still as hard as before, but his words carried a softness he only held for talking about you.
âI know. I fucked up. I want to apologise and make it up to her,â Liam says, genuine apology in his tone as he looks at Lando. Landoâs expression was set, a look that didnât waver, an anger that only that of a protective sibling could have.
âLan? Whoâs at the door?â Your quiet voice made Landoâs defensive demeanour drop as he turned to face you, his expression and body language softening quicker than anything Liam had ever seen in his life.
âIâve got this handled, y/n/n. Donât worry about it,â Lando says, trying to urge you to leave, but you had caught sight of Liam over Landoâs shoulder, and your expression shifted.
âLiam? What are you doing here?â Your question was quiet as you shrank into yourself, your arms wrapping around your middle as if they were a shield. Even when it was evident that you had just rolled out of bed, you still looked gorgeous in Liamâs eyes, dressed in sweatpants and his hoodie; you were still the most beautiful person in the world to him.
âHe was just leaving,â Lando warns, turning to Liam, giving him a deadly glare to encourage him to go along with his words.
âI wanted to talk to you, to apologise for yesterday,â Liam says quickly, ignoring Landoâs words as he takes a step forward.
âDonât you fucking dare,â Lando says, his voice dropping to the venomous tone Liam had just been on the receiving end of mere minutes prior.
âLando. Itâs okay. He can come in,â you say quietly, making Lando stop, studying you carefully.
âAre you sure?â he asks, his voice dropping to a low volume as he steps closer to you, wanting to make sure this was something you wanted.
âIâm sure. He can come in,â you assert, glancing briefly over at Liam before focusing on Lando, who nods slightly.
âOkay. But if you want him gone, just say the word, and Iâll get him out. Iâll make you some breakfast so you can have some privacy. If you need me, donât be afraid to come and get me, yeah?â Lando says softly, pulling you into a quick hug, pressing a kiss to the top of your head. When he steps away, he fires one last warning glare in Liamâs direction before retreating into the kitchen, finally allowing Liam to step into your flat, closing the door behind him.
âLetâs go to the living room,â you say, gesturing for Liam to follow you, which he does without hesitation. You ease yourself down on the sofa, and Liam follows suit, leaving enough space between the two of you. As Liam took a moment to study your features, he noticed your red, slightly puffy eyes, an alarming indication that youâd been crying, most likely because of him.
ây/nâŠâ
âIâm so sorry, Liam.â You speak over Liam, glancing away as his eyebrows furrow at your words.
âWhat are you apologising for?â Liam asks, watching as you purse your lips in thought.
âI caused the argument. If I had just kept my mouth shut, we wouldnât be in this situation,â you say, fiddling with your fingers as your hands sat in your lap.
ây/n, donât say that. I got angry with you over something stupid. I shouldâve expected that you might not want to move to Monaco. Youâre settled here and have been since before we met. I shouldâve listened to you, and we couldâve had a mature conversation about it. Instead, I acted like an asshole and made you feel like shit. Iâm so sorry,â Liam apologises, itching to reach for your hand, only holding himself back out of fear of your reaction.
âIâm not embarrassed by you, Liam. I promise,â you say softly, your gaze briefly meeting Liamâs as he softens, a small sigh escaping his lips.
âI know youâre not. I shouldnât have said that. Youâve been there for me more times than I can count. I donât deserve you, I know I donât. I am so sorry for everything I said yesterday. I shouldnât have snapped at you the way I did,â Liam says softly, getting the courage to reach over, taking your hand in his as you exhale shakily.
âI love you so much. Iâd live anywhere as long as Iâm living with you,â Liam continues, finally brave enough to move ever so closer.
âReally?â you ask quietly, your gaze fixed on your interlocked fingers.
âReally. I thought about it a lot when I went back to mine. Monaco is nice and has a lot of motorsport history. But I donât want to live there if itâs only going to make you unhappy. I never shouldâve suggested that you leave your job or follow me around the world. I know how much your job means to you,â Liam says, squeezing your hand softly as you finally lift your gaze to meet his properly.
âI donât want you to give up on living somewhere you want to live just because of me,â you mumble, a frown playing on your lips.
âHey, I wouldnât be giving up anything. If I moved there, Iâd be doing something a lot worse. Iâd be hurting you, and thatâs not fair. We need to live somewhere weâd both be happy,â Liam says softly, running his thumb across the back of your hand.
âWould you be happy living in England just because of me?â you question. In response, Liam wraps an arm around your shoulder, pulling you into his side as you curl into him.
âI donât want to live anywhere without you. Besides, Iâve lived in Milton Keynes, canât get much worse than that,â Liam says with a soft laugh, managing to elicit a breathy laugh from your lips as you bury yourself further into his side.
âWe can move into your place if youâd prefer. I want us both to be happy,â you say, looking up at Liam as he smiles softly, pressing a kiss to the top of your head.
âWhat if we find a new place here? A place we both like, and we can make it our own, together,â Liam says softly, hugging you closer.
âWell, itâs either that or we move into yours because thereâs no way your sim rig is fitting anywhere here,â you giggle, resting your head against Liamâs chest, unaware of his smile widening just at the sound of your laugh.
âI vote we find a place that we both like and make it our place,â Liam says, looking down at you as you shift, adjusting your gaze to look up at him.
âI like the sound of that,â you say softly as Liam regards you softly. You watched as his eyes flicked down to your lips, a hesitant look on his face you hadnât seen since the day you had your first kiss. Taking the initiative, you lean closer, connecting your lips to his in a gentle kiss. One that reassured that things between you werenât broken, and that together youâd figure it all out.
âAm I interrupting something?â The sound of Landoâs voice makes you jump apart, looking over to see Lando standing in the doorway, a plate of food in hand, as he raises an eyebrow.
âFor a professional racer, I thought youâd have a better sense of timing,â you tease, leaning against the cushions as Lando rolls his eyes with a small smile.
âI got you some food,â Lando says simply, holding out the plate as you shift, taking the plate from Landoâs hands with a grateful smile.
âThank you, Lando,â you say quietly as Lando settles in the armchair, staring pointedly at the two of you.
âSo, have you solved everything?â Lando asks, watching the two of you as you pause, glancing over at Liam, who offers you a gentle smile.
âWeâre good,â you confirm before digging into your food.
âWe talked it out. I know I was wrong to talk to her the way I did, and Iâll do whatever it takes to make up for it. And I think we made a decision,â Liam says, his arm tightening around your shoulders, tugging you back into his side carefully, mindful of your food.
âMade a decision?â Lando questions, his eyes flicking between you and Liam as you nod.
âWeâre going to start looking for a new place in London. Somewhere we can make a home together,â you say softly, studying Landoâs reaction carefully as his eyes narrow for a brief second.
âAnd youâre okay with this?â His question was directed at Liam, determined to gauge Liamâs reaction.
âOf course, I am. Monaco is a nice place to live, for sure, but y/nâs settled here, and with me being gone more often than not, it makes sense to stay here where sheâs comfortable,â Liam explains, his answer diplomatic as you both watch Landoâs expression carefully. Lando is still for a moment, his eyes flicking between you and Liam as if waiting for someone to tell him otherwise before he finally nods.
âGood. Youâve still got some making up to do for what you did.â
âLando,â you warn, shooting a glance over at your brother.
âIâm being serious. He really upset you, and I wonât let him get away with that,â Lando replies, his glare sharp as he looks over at Liam.
âI just said that-â
âItâs okay, babe. I get it. Heâs right to be upset. Iâm going to do everything I can to prove to you that Iâm not going to treat her like that again,â Liam says, at first directed to you before addressing Lando.
âIâm holding you to that. Seriously,â Lando says, warning in his tone as he looks pointedly at Liam, who nods as if he were in a strategy briefing with his team.
âI wonât let her down, mate,â Liam says assuringly, his voice never wavering.
âYou better not. Because if something like this happens again. Iâm taking you out in the next race. My championship wonât even matter,â Lando says, his anger refusing to fade for even a second. Liam understood his anger. He knew Lando never messed around, not when it came to you.
âI know. Iâm going to do my absolute best to keep her happy. I donât ever want to upset her again. Promise,â Liam says, his thumb brushing over your hip as Lando sighs heavily.
âOkay. Fine. Iâm going to head back to Maxâs, no point me hanging around much longer,â Lando says, getting to his feet as you mimic his actions, following him to the door.
âThank you for everything, Lan,â you say gratefully as Lando softens, tugging you into a secure hug.
âYou donât need to thank me. Iâll always be there for you,â Lando says softly, pressing a soft kiss to the top of your head before you both pull away, smiling.
âSafe journey to Maxâs. Tell him and P I say hi. Oh, and give Rio a pet from me. I miss him,â you say with a grin as Lando rolls his eyes with a laugh.
âIâm sure Max will be thrilled to hear you missed Rio more than him.â
âRioâs adorable, how could anyone not miss him?â you joke as Lando shakes his head with a laugh before sobering slightly.
âText me if you need anything, yeah?â Lando says, reaching out to ruffle your hair as you laugh, swatting at his hand before softening once more.
âLove you, Lan,â you say, giving him another quick hug that heâs quick to reciprocate.
âLove you too, y/n/n,â he replies before releasing you from the hug, bidding you a quiet goodbye before exiting the flat, leaving you to head back to Liam.
You return to the living room, immediately seating yourself next to Liam and curling into his side as his arm instinctively wraps around your waist, tugging you into his side.
âI am sorry about yesterday,â he apologises again, his lips brushing against your temple before pressing a tender kiss there.
âIâm sorry too. I love you so much,â you reply, turning to look up at Liam, your lips meeting his in a brief, soft kiss.
âI love you too, but you donât need to apologise. This was all on me,â Liam says gently, brushing a stray strand of hair away from your face. Choosing not to argue the point any further, you settle against Liamâs chest as he turns the tv on, putting on your comfort show.
âYou know, I donât think I ever wanted to move to Monaco,â Liam admits quietly after a few minutes of watching the tv in silence.
âWhat do you mean?â you ask, shifting to look up at him curiously.
âI thought about it a lot last night. I think I thought of it as some pride thing. Like Iâd made it in F1. It felt like what I had to do now that Iâm on a better salary,â Liam confesses, his gaze dipping in shame as he talks, making you fight back a frown. You knew how lucky you were to grow up in the life that you did. You and your siblings got support in any hobby you wanted to do. When Lando first started karting, your dad barely thought twice about paying the fees; your parents were able to financially support his career as he moved up from karting to the lower Formulaâs. While Liamâs parents had to make the decision to sell their house in order to support Liamâs racing career. Him wanting to move to Monaco came because he wanted to prove to himself and others that his parents' sacrifice had been worth it. That the money they poured into his career had achieved something.
âOh, Liam. You donât need to live in an expensive country to prove to anyone that youâre worthy of being a Formula One driver,â you say, reaching up to cup his cheek.
âI just want my parents to know their sacrifices have been worth it,â Liam mutters, leaning ever so slightly into your touch.
âThey know, Liam. God, do they know. Theyâve seen you outqualify Max Verstappen in Singapore. Theyâve seen you hold Max behind you in Hungary. Theyâve seen you defend against a Red Bull, a McLaren, and two Ferraris in one race. Liam, every penny theyâve poured into your career has been proven to be worth it. Theyâre so proud of you. The same way I am. Where you live doesnât determine your worth,â you say, your voice soft, yet firm enough to get your point across as your thumb brushes over the apple of his cheek.
âI know I just said it, but I really love you,â Liam says softly, pressing a gentle kiss to your palm.
âI love you too. So much,â you reply, once again moving closer to press your lips to Liamâs for another kiss, your hand shifting from his cheek to his hair while his grip tightens on your waist. After you pull away, you return your head to Liamâs chest, your arm winding around his middle in an attempt to make up for the cuddles you missed out on the night before.
The two of you quietly watched the show for a while. The silence offers nothing but comfort as you curl impossibly closer. When Liam lets out a soft chuckle at one of the jokes a character makes, you couldnât help but look up at him, eyes full of nothing but love and admiration, something that didnât go unnoticed by Liam.
âWhat are you staring at, hmm?â Liam asks softly, his smile warm as his eyes flicker between yours.
âNothing. I just canât wait for the rest of our lives together.â
