Ireland Create History with Stunning 2-0 Series Win Over India
The Indian team is set to begin a five-match T20I series against England on July 1, but ahead of that challenge, Team India suffered a shocking 2-0 T20I series defeat against Ireland in Dublin. The series, led by captain Shreyas Iyer, was expected to serve as ideal preparation for the England tour. Instead, it exposed several weaknesses in the Indian side.
Before the series began, many viewed it as a warm-up opportunity for India's young squad. However, following the humiliating clean sweep, the players have come under heavy criticism. Very few would have predicted that Ireland would dominate India and register a historic 2-0 series victory.
The defeat has now raised serious concerns ahead of the England series. Many fans and experts have even started questioning how competitive India will be in English conditions.
India's batting unit failed to deliver throughout the series. Senior batters Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan, and captain Shreyas Iyer struggled to make an impact. Tilak Varma and Abhishek Sharma played one impressive innings each, but their contributions were not enough to change the outcome.
The bowling attack also disappointed. In both matches, the bowlers created early pressure but failed to capitalise, conceding too many runs in the final 10 overs. As a result, Ireland recovered from difficult situations to post competitive totals in both games.
Fielding proved to be another major concern. Indian fielders dropped three catches in each match, allowing Ireland to escape pressure and build match-winning partnerships. Those missed opportunities ultimately played a crucial role in India's defeat.
Questions have also been raised over Shreyas Iyer's captaincy. India chose to chase in both matches despite the team's stronger record while batting first. This is not the first time India has struggled while chasing in T20Is. During the 2026 T20 World Cup, India's only defeat came while chasing a target. Similarly, in the Asia Cup final against Pakistan, Tilak Varma's crucial innings rescued India from a difficult situation and played a key role in securing the title.
India's batters appeared to approach the games with an IPL-style mindset rather than adapting to the challenging conditions in Dublin. The aggressive approach resulted in early wickets, putting excessive pressure on the middle and lower order. Following the series, several critics claimed that India's batters are highly effective on flat pitches but continue to struggle whenever they encounter quality seam and swing bowling.
The selection committee has also come under scrutiny for not including Vaibhav Sooryavanshi in the playing XI despite his outstanding recent form. Many believe he could have strengthened India's batting lineup.
With confidence dented after the Ireland series, all eyes will now be on India's upcoming five-match T20I series against England. Can the Men in Blue bounce back in even more challenging English conditions, or will the same problems continue to haunt them?
