Beach Sampling – Music Made With Sand, Rocks & Water
There are some creative beat makers out there – the ones who try to push the limits of conventional music by using alternative ways to sample beats. While there are already a few well-known ambient and downtempo music creators like Brian Eno, who make use of blending sounds together, few of them take to the beach and record their samples live. In this short video by John Valasis, he brings his recording camera to the beach and creates whatever noises he can create.

He uses the sound of a rock cast into the water to create sort of a snare hit, and empty beer bottles filled with sand to create shakers and high-hat effects. Twigs are also broken to add to the collection of natural sound effects. The video itself is a recording of where all of the sampling took place, in Kalamitsi-Halkidiki (GR). The melody of the track was produced by vocalist Vittoria Volovik, but the video, music, and editing was done by John Valasis himself. This type of sampling is not anything new, but I’m usually surprised when it’s done this well. Valasis obviously has a very strong command of his editing skills, both visually and musically, and the video and song both complement each other. http://www.synthtopia.com/content/2012/11/10/beach-sampling-music-made-with-sand-rocks-water
