Live Project Contribution
Train & Soup scene cleanup
One of our tasks for the pre-production phase was to fix the shot where the protagonist is riding on a train.
Website & Pitch Presentation
During the pre-production phase, we created a website in order to collectively present our work in a professional manner. The website contains a link to our presentation for the client pitch. Throughout production of the film, we needed to move further away from our teaser and synopsis in order to more incorporate the problems physical books can present in everyday life.
Sketches
Practice sketches for the protagonist's design.
We were able to successfully reach deadlines as we stuck to a fairly simple art style, and the direction and feedback given from Spiracle was very constructive.
Much workaround was needed for the sequence of events in the advertisement. There was a hiking sequence right before the transition to Spiracle's spiral logo that we unfortunately scrapped for production time, as well as a few sequences at the end I was not able to complete due to time constraints. I had difficulties visualising and maintaining proportions, especially on the arm holding the soup and the bike.
At the beginning of the live project, we were presented with the challenge of making our film emotionally impactful. However, our idea for the plot had to change as our direction was more solution-oriented. With feedback from Spiracle, we eventually decided that it would be better for us to present an audience with the problems one can face when reading physical books, and then provide them with a solution. The initial idea was more to do with the sentimentality of reading books, however we were asked to simplify the plot due to the sensitive themes present in the idea.
I had difficulties keeping up with a consistent schedule, a personal failing on my part. We were not able to use any of the tests above as they were not needed and did not match the overall film's style. Thankfully, we were confident in our ability to reach deadlines together. Despite my anxiety about experimentation, I have learnt what different frame hold lengths look like in one scene together, and now feel more confident when figuring out how fast movements for individual portions of a scene should be.
Overall, our team held the project together quite strongly despite our busy schedules. Our team was very supportive of each other throughout the project despite difficulties we experienced. We took a lot of helpful and constructive criticism on board from the company and tutors alike, and dialogued amongst ourselves whenever there was a solution that needed to be found with small technical issues.
