i put this off till the end of the day because I was hoping Iād have some kind of musical inspiration. that didnāt happen. so this recording is very much Something Different, and it was a lot of fun and i learned a lot from it (definitely going to use those WhiteNoise clicks more), but it is definitely notĀ āgoodā orĀ ālistenableā. edit to clarify: because I didnāt really have any ideas going into it, I kinda just started typing and went from there. I went in with the mindset that this was rote practice, and didnāt really try to make this one like a performance; just kinda went with it at a slower pace. All this to say, this was a slower, learning-oriented session, not so muchĀ ālive coding practiceā.

itās spring break and Iām going to TRY to record at least one of these a day every day. But, I have three other school projects I need to be working on, plus internship hunting, plus an overnight sleep study, plus being a normal human being, so weāll see how it works out.
this recording was pretty interesting. the description on the youtube video has most of my thoughts, but i should also point out that Iām using really cheap earbuds (didnāt bring my decent headphones home with me) so if thereās any egregious, terrible sounds, Iāll use the excuse that I probably couldnāt hear them and therefore itās not my fault

From video description: misunderstood the behavior of Pbind (specifically, how to modify running Pbinds). caused interesting behavior with the drone synth's rhythm, where multiple arhythmic Pbinds were modifying it. didn't figure out what was causing this until the very end, but it made things interesting.drone sound was kinda cool for making it on-the-spot; i really like PWM, and the little LFOs on the lowpass filter just made it that touch more interesting. wish i'd put more thought into the bells, i bet you can do some really interesting things with that kind of sound. maybe use that as a percussion instead of plain old synthesized drum sounds?Ā General updates:
Havenāt had as much time as Iād have liked over the last two weeks with career fair, first exams, and projects all lining up. Still did find time to record sessions 2, 3, and 4, as well as practice some off-the-record synthesis techniques. Iām STILL behind with exploring TidalCycles, but Iām getting more comfortable in general with live coding; itās less scary to sit down and just start putting things down, and Iām getting a little better at making the sounds that Iām trying to make. Iāve been trying to create more complex patterns and polyrhythms, since the algorithmic nature of coded music makes it so easy; getting them to sound good/interesting is still tricky, but Iām getting there. Iām still having lots of trouble generating pleasing melodies. I think I need to work more with rests and really, just practicing. I donāt have a background in composition, so Iām somewhat at a loss.

Live Coding Practice #1 (SuperCollider)

This week Iāve spent some time looking into TidalCycles, but Iām struggling to understand itās syntax so for now Iām working with SuperCollider.
For this session I created one synth and used it for quick practice with Pbindefs, tempoclocks, and sequencing. I like the sound of the synth (and it has plenty of parameters to tweak it well beyond what I do in this session), although I still need a lot more practice to make use of more parameters in a live session.
This took a few takes because of some technical glitches and also my broccoli finished baking halfway through one session and I had to attend to that, very important. There were more than a few mistakes here but I think itās a decent start.
I think the next thing I want to do, outside of simply practicing more, is to create a few percussive synths and practice sequencing them. I think I would enjoy it a lot more, and it would put me closer to the kind of sounds and music I want to be making. (The melodic, primitive music in this practice session doesnt really interest me, and I donāt believe live coding is a great means to produce that sort of conventional music anyway).
