"This is a colored lithophane made from cast porcelain. It was created using a mold made from a 3D-printed lithophane, from a photograph of my cat, Yoko. A handmade wooden frame encases the lithophane, while colored transparencies add color to the lithophane."
This was originally supposed to be for Jedi June. It's the end of August now, but I figured I'd still share the lithophane box that I designed and 3D printed. If you're unfamiliar with it, a lithophane brings a 2D photo into 3D by printing the darker parts of an image thicker and the lighter parts thinner, so that when you shine light through, it looks like the original photo. And I thought that the idea of an image that's only truly revealed when you shine light through it was very suitable for a Jedi-themed project. So I printed several Jedi-related pictures as lithophanes along with a base and frame to hold them:
The top image is the Jedi starbird symbol, this one in particular from the "Lop and Ocho" Visions episode.
On the sides, I have:
Yoda with Luke, from The Empire Strikes Back
Obi-Wan, Yoda, and Mace in the Jedi Temple, from Attack of the Clones
The lightsaber artwork from various Return of the Jedi related media (though I personally most associate it with the novelization cover)
And F, from "The Village Bride"
It unfortunately doesn't show up well when the box is lit, but I also "carved" Aurebesh text into the frame (i.e. carved in software and printed with it):
Over Yoda and Luke, I have of course Yoda's famous "Do or do not. There is no try."
Over the Jedi in the Temple, I have a Yoda quote from one of my favorite Star Wars novels, Yoda: Dark Rendezvous - "Nothing but our choices"
Over the lightsaber I have one of the lines from the mantra: "There is no ignorance, there is knowledge." I chose this line in particular for this project since I spent a lot of time learning in order to create this.
And over F we have "May the Force be with you"
And that's it! There's definitely room for improvement and I ran into a lot of issues along the way, but I'm satisfied with how it turned out and with what I learned from it.
