Leaving Breadcrumbs behind [13/?]
Author’s Note: Hello,
Another update after so much time.
Enjoy it. I enjoy writing it and seeing where it gets me. But it did take me quite some brainstorming again of where I wanted to go with it all.
Love,
Lis
Leaving Breadcrumbs behind Masterlist
“Okay, do I understand you correctly, you always see and hear the same people around? About 15?” you ask.
“Yes, and they all have mud everywhere on their clothes. Now that Wo Fat is here, it’s more than 15, but usually he doesn’t stay long. Probably about 2 days.” JJ answers, as he sat down again. The condition he is in, is not going to make escaping any easier. He is thin, has little to no strength. You notice that his breathing becomes heavy as soon as he stands and walks a bit around the small room. His posture is also not very great, probably due to wrongly healed injuries. He doesn’t look like they are still mistreating him. They are not bothered to kill him or not. They knew he would be useful at some point.
“How much food do they give you? And water?” you ask, looking around, noticing no trace of any of these two things.
“Just bread and water. I have about 20 minutes to eat and drink it, before they come and take everything out of here, to not leave me with anything that I could use against them. They weren’t like that in the beginning and I was able to flee. But I underestimated the surroundings and they got me before I got far enough in the jungle to hide. Since then, they make sure, I am not left with anything but myself.”
“What did you see when you fled?” you ask. In your head you are thinking about every possible way of fleeing with your brother. The easiest would be with some kind of vehicle, because clearly running is out of the question. Technically you could be able to carry him, but making both of you slower and a bigger target, because you cannot split up and decoy them.
“Cars standing around, all of them having guns on them at all times. More guns laying around.”
You nod, thinking about possibilities, but you need the exact position of everything. But when was it, that he fled?
“When did you flee? How long ago?” you ask, making your brother sigh.
“Look, (Y/N/N)… I know what you are thinking and what you are planning, but there is no way, that we both will get out of here alive-“ he starts and you shake your head, opening your mouth to protest, but JJ holds his hand up.
“-no, let me finish. You see in what kind of condition I am in, and they do that on purpose. To make it hard for me to flee or cause any resistance. Even if you get out of this cell, I don’t see us both getting out of here alive.”
You kneel in front of him and take his head in your hands.
“JJ, I thought I lost you all this time and by some kind of twisted faith, I am here now and still cannot believe, that my big brother is sitting before me right now. I will NOT leave you here again. Either we both get out of here or we both die here. It’s the same situation as all the other times. For me nothing has changed. What about you?” you ask him as he looks at you, before his lips twitch into a smile.
“Bound by blood and battle” he grins, making you grin. You haven’t heard that since the last mission of both of you.
“Bound by blood and battle.” You nod. “So now tell me everything about the layout of this camp, that you can remember.” You say, sitting in front of him.
Back on Oahu…
The whole Team gathers everything they need and follow the Lieutenants car heading to a Navy station. As they park and enter the buildings, they see that a lot of eyes are on them, probably curious what “civilians” are doing here.
The Team follow Lieutenant Wily and Rath deeper into the building and into a an Operation Room. It’s dark and there a screens everywhere at the back of the room. A lot of people are in the room and watching what is happening on the screen. In the Middle of the room stands a Navy officer, also watching the screens. The team is told to stop at the back of the room and to watch and wait till the Officer is going to talk to them. But soon the whole Team understands that, what everyone is watching is the live broadcast of a mission. Quickly they all understand it’s a mission to take out a target.
As they all watch, Danny quietly moves over to Steve and says
“I’m glad you’re with us now.”
Steve watching the screens intently with crossed arms just nods and answers
“Me too.”
After watching a few more minutes the whole room hears a “Target eliminated” and a few people cheer. The officer in the room then gives new orders before turning around and looking at the team.
“Captain Thomas Hargrove” he says and extends his hand to Steve, but Steve doesn’t move and just looks him in the eye.
“Captain Hargrove, Commander McGarrets Team insisted to be brought here.” Lieutenant Wily explains.
“Of course, he did. Follow me.” The captain explains and leads everyone to a different room.
Once everyone is in the room, the door gets close and Captain Hargrove addresses Steve again.
“I’m hoping that your shoulder is fine, Commander McGarrett.”
“Not thanks to you.” Steve grumbles.
“Alright, what do you want to know?” he asks.
“What do I want to know?! How about you tell me, why according to you, I’m dead?” Steve challenges.
“That’s classified.” The captain answers, clearly not in the mood for Steve’s antics.
“Classified? Faking my death is classified? I’ll tell you what I’ll do about this classified information, I can go out right now and talk to any news channel, that as of right now, the 5-0 Task force is investigating, why MY personal death, was faked. Let’s see how classified this information is after that.” Steve answers, moving closer to the captain, who at first doesn’t say anything.
“There is an ongoing mission, in which we had to ensure that a certain target got wrong information about you and your health status.” the Captain calmly answers.
“Certain Target.” Joe scoffs. “I don’t want to play any games here. You know exactly why we are here. My daughter is god know where, doesn’t know if her fiancé is alive, we don’t even know if SHE is alive. So stop trying to get us to back off, because we won’t and start talking about what the hell is going on here.”
The Captain looks around the room at the whole team before sighing and nodding.
“Fine. What do you know so far?” he asks.
“That I was shot and that she is on the run.” Steve says, making sure not to say anything more.
“Nothing else?” Hargrove asks suspiciously.
“Nothing else, besides that my death has been faked.”
“Fine.” Hargrove nods, seeing as he will not get any more info. “Y/N White contacted us a couple of weeks ago about new information she got concerning her deceased brother. We had no other choice then giving her more information on the mission that caused her brother to be classified as MIA and later KIA.”
“What does that mean?” Joe asks.
“It means, that they were on two separate mission, but didn’t know that. He wasn’t supposed to go missing. They were supposed to individually achieve their goals for a broader context and then get back to us.” Hargrove further explains
“You mean to tell us, that you thought it would be a great idea to tell one of the most successful teams at that time, different target and think that wouldn’t go south?” Joe asks in disbelieve.
“They were always –“ he starts but Steve holds up his hand.
“Do you even know, that Y/N always thought it was her fault, that her brother went missing? Do you understand, that telling them both different goals meant they were not as prepared as they should have?!” Steve explains.
“We understand this is emotional –“ Hargrove starts again.
“No. You don’t.” Steve answers. “Tell us everything that happened in the last weeks, and tell us now.” He continues. Hargrove sighs and starts telling them everything, which is just confirming what was explained in the letter.
“Let me get this straight, even though she didn’t ask for any intervention from your side, you still intervened and covered her tracks? Even when she freed someone from Halawa?” Joe summarizes.
“The prison incident was handled to ensure –“
“Handled? You let someone walk out of Halawa und pretended it never happened.”
“Commander with all due respect, it needed to be done. Whether she needed help or not, we needed her to achieve her goal. To get to Wo Fat.” Hargrove states.
“That is not her goal!” Steve shouts.
“He goal is to get to her brother, which you all failed to do!” Joe growls. “You knew what Wo Fat does to leverage people. You knew he uses family. And you still let her play along. And now look where we are.”
“Do you even know where she is?” asks Steve.
“Currently we are now aware of her location.” Hargrove states.
“Do you have a plan to find her? And what do you do then?” Joe asks.
“Currently, we are trying to track her and tracking some of Wo Fats contacts. But even if we find her, she refused extraction.” Hargrove claims nonchalantly.
“She refused help!” Joe yells and slams his hand on the table “Not permission to gamble with her life. Because you still think its for the ‘broader picture’.”
“So I am guessing, you don’t have any information for us.” Hargrove concludes. In the whole time he didn’t move an inch and is apparently more than fed up with this conversation.
“We don’t.” Steve answers standing straight in front of the captain.
“And even if we did –“ he starts
“- you lost the right to ask.” Joe finishes.
“Let’s go. We are done here.” Steve says and heads for the door, that Chin already opened.
