In his office full of antiques and heirlooms of inestimable value, an elderly man sat in an old chair, his shoulders hunched, his wrinkled hands, one of them black and rotted, covering his eyes as if he wanted to stop seeing the ugliness the world had to offer. He wore old shoes and a slightly rumpled blue suit, but if someone came in unannounced, he could lift his head and look as good as new, still the same professor ready to offer wise advices and a liquorice as a farewell. Over the years, many had defined him as a brilliant mind, even awarding him prizes and recognitions of a certain importance, and among his friends he could count some of the most capable wizards who had ever existed, but the reality of the facts was that in a delicate position like his, he could never really trust anyone, and although it was enough for some to know only what was strictly necessary about his plans and machinations, he had made others his enemies, some more openly and some in a more subtle way. On days like that, when the weight of managing the fates of so many people was too much, he wished he could go back to being a boy, to a time when his Boggarts was something different, and his most faithful companion the young man he saw reflected when he peered into the Mirror of Erised. But just as had happened so long ago, when he found himself faced with a peer blinded by the thirst for power, he hadn’t been able to foresee what would become of the boy with a Muggle surname and extraordinary abilities he had saved in an orphanage just like many others. He had suspected, he had harboured doubts that could seem like an obsession, but the one who in adulthood turned out to be his nemesis, a mind so twisted that despite all the extra life experience he struggled to understand, had succeeded in his aim: he had gathered followers, he had instilled terror, and once love, that feeling he couldn’t experience due to the circumstances of his conception, had defeated him, he wanted to delude himself it was over, at least for a while, at least long enough for him not to pay for his mistakes. But when spectacularly brilliant people make mistakes, those mistakes tend to be just as spectacular, and he wasn’t sure they wouldn’t be mentioned on his epitaph.
