Lip stretching started over 10,000 years ago. It was practiced by indeginous tribes in Africa, South America, Europe and a few tribes from the Amazon rain forest. Today, it is common with the Mursi tribe in Southwestern Ethiopia. Women go through this process by choice, before they are married. The stretching starts with a single piercing, which is stretched with a small stick. Over time, bigger sticks are used, which is eventually replaced with a clay disc. The size of the disc is increased until they believe the lip cannot be stretched further. It is still unclear as to how it started. One theory suggests that it started as a way to cause intentional disfigurement to the women to make them less attractive to slave traders.
