Skywave Linux 2.0 is released and uploading now. It's got a new lowlatency kernel, a fresh base of Ubuntu 16.04, and plenty of application upgrades. My favorite app is the upgraded Gqrx 2.6. It looks good and works beautifully.

Skywave Linux 1.7 released, with upgrades and more user friendly dialogues for SDR operation.
Easy SDR Setup: Kali Linux
While considering building my own linux based SDR system, with several software packages installed, configured, and ready to run, I came across a very nice one already up and running: Kali Linux. It is primarily a system designed for network penetration testing, and as such there are applications for specialized radio protocols. GNU Radio is perfect for that.
Kali Linux developers have put together a smoothly working install of GNU Radio, with SDR clients useful to radio experimenters and hobbyist listeners. GQRX, Osmocom RTLSDR, and several useful GNU Radio blocks are in there, ready to run.
I had it up and running on a USB stick about 10 minutes after the download finished. Kali is very nice indeed!
