I chose this quote by unknown author as it expresses well my feelings of desolation towards humanity as a whole (Don’t get me wrong, I love many humans on an individual basis). It is more than unfortunate how we are driven to destroy this planet for temporary self-preservation and enrichment. We are going towards another mass extinction event, currently losing 27.000 species a year (all lifeforms such as bacteria, plants, and fungi included) against the normal rate, based on fossil evidence, of 10-100 a year. A 123.000 acres of forest are cut down daily. Global temperatures rising, pollution of air, ground, and oceans, etc. . I try to keep some cognitive dissonance for my sanity, while still attempting to be conscious of how my choices affect the planet. But it is depressing to be going through my garbage to recycle, while our current government is undoing industrial and commercial regulations aimed at preventing pollution, or actively denying there is human-caused climate change altogether, against so much evidence to the contrary. . An illustration/monogram I just finished in honor of @letter.queen’s newly released LINE WIZARD™. The line wizard is an awesome device that easily lets you draw evenly spaced lines. Handmade, it weighs in at a solid 2.5lbs and operates smoothly. Back in the day when drafting by hand was common practice, devices like these were quite common, but nowadays none of them are produced anymore. . This is my submission for this week’s #goodtypetuesday: a tool you couldn’t do without. I chose to honor the Line Wizard, (or as I like to call it: the Wine Lizard), as made by the super talented @letter.queen. The line wizard is a parallel liner, a drafting tool commonly used back when ‘adobe’ only referred to a type of clay. It’s a fairly simple, mechanically operated tool that pushes a ruler forth over a preset distance with the movement of a finger. This allows for super accurate, and relatively fast, hatching and cross-hatching. The angle of the ruler and the distance that it moves at each ‘click’ can be changed, allowing for many possibilities. . In this illustration, I used the line wizard for a triple-layered dropshadow, inspired by lettering on the Sanborn map covers of the late 19th century, as well as the hatching inside of the giant ‘W’. . It may not be the most fundamental tool in my collection, but it’s by far the coolest. Nobody produces these anymore! The last company that did so was German and ended their production line about 10 years ago because of lack of demand. Skyler came around and made a batch of these for the new generation of artists who enjoy working manually rather than digitally, but didn’t have access to the tools their grandparents used because digitization killed that market.
