now for some good news of the world (rare)
yesterday my mom texted me, casually, 'oh and I went to visit Grandma with your sister' upon which I immediately called her for the story. you see, my sister is trans and has recently, a few months ago, officially transitioned, except she'd never told my grandma because of The Anxiety. so I immediately called my mom and was like??? soo??
so my grandma is lovely. I never expected her to have a bad reaction because she's a cool and open-minded granny generally, but I also didn't really know what reaction I did expect. what my mom told me was objectively hilarious. to me
first she proceeded to entirely ignore the elephant in the room. (y'know, clothes, makeup, quite obvious)
when they both got a bit nervous after an hour of usual conversation my sister was like. so uh. Grandma...u notice anything different? and my grandma goes
"you have a new hairdo? love what you've done to the curls" (she's a bit hard of hearing but she's NOT blind)
so my sister's like yeah and uh y'know. like points at her like SMOKY EYE MAKEUP.
"so you wear makeup now? cool," she says, entirely nonplussed. cool as a geriatric cucumber
mom and sis look at each other and my mom tries to approach the subject from a different angle. she asks "so mom, have you ever heard of the term transgender?"
at which point my almost 90yo grandma turns to her and goes "you think I live behind the moon?" then turns back to my sister and goes
"oh so you're a girl now?"
and then proceeds to correctly gender her and use her new name for the rest of their visit, iconic behavior no notes
