I looked into this person myself after getting this ask (my screenshots are below). It's someone who has talked about racial issues before (with DnD and that LotR show, I think??) but....never tweeted about it wrt IWTV, which is insane. Their article for the show that's mentioned in the tweets below also glosses over it in favor of focusing on queerness only. Their novel is about a white witch when it seems like it should prbly be an indigenous story?? I got the feeling this is someone who feels they're doing everything "right" wrt not being racist, but ends up not doing much at all bcuz they're too afraid to step outside a certain comfort zone about it and kinda feels like it's not their fight deep down. Their story about how they got hired too (under the cut) is also the most white privileged thing I've ever read. There's so many ppl in this fandom for the show to pick from if they want to include fandom ppl, yet most ppl picked / named are white ppl who are clueless about the majority of racial themes in the show or fans of color who align with white fandom ideals and won't rock the boat at all about racial things otherwise either. Like u said, we all know what happened with Naomi and the podcast by comparison.

if this were me, I'd never have publicly announced this tbh. I get that it's a job account but idk how u can have a history interacting with the iwtv fandom and think this is gonna go well for u once u upgrade to getting a job. wouldn't fucking be me.

So I want to be hopeful that maybe it'll get better moving forward but this news with Lin and how they apparently were offered the job in the first place (very surprised they even shared that, they didn't have to say anything about it but they did), and that even if Louis will supposedly have a more prominent role than in the books it's now going to be focusing on Lestat, I feel there might even be less incentive to intentionally hire a diverse writer's room, I guess?

I don't want to assume that this news with Lin is indicative of what the writer's room will look like. And I know that Lin is only a writer's assistant, and I know what writer's assistants do, but it just feels distinctly unfair that they got the job the way they did when there are for sure POC who would have loved to have the chance to even apply for the position... And then add to that Naomi's podcast being cancelled (even tho I thought it was a really nice idea) and Autumn Brown basically being given the job in her place, which always rubbed me the wrong way, and all of the weirdly sanitized interviews (like why was there basically only one question about the trial asked to Delainey and then the topic seemed to never pop up again in any interview following? Unless I'm wrong and missed an interview where it did)... I don't know. I know having connections is super important in this industry but why couldn't the show runners intentionally break that mold and try to open more doors?

Not impressed. Trying to remain optimistic for this next season, because I really want to be excited because I really love this show, it means so much to me, but it's not starting out well.

The reason I'm bringing this up is because I can see everything Cida Bento describes in the book happening in real time in this fandom. It's crazy because she studied a lot of anti blackness in work places, but this fandom proves that anti blackness and racism are always there, every fucking where.

And now with that white person being hired for the show this became even more appropriate. That's why I felt the need of sending this ask. I strongly recommend this reading, especially for us white people who think we are doing so much just by not using slurs, not using force towards PoC or "voting for the right person" and that basic stuff. spoilers: we are not.

Ya, and one of the things fandom pushes a lot as their response to racism (or any other related issue of oppressing whatever group) is that fandom isn't "real life" and it's supposed to be "fun." But fandom is made up of ppl who come from all parts of the world that promote these ideals and so these issues don't just magically skip over fandom. We hear all day how serious fandom is to white queer identies and whatever, but everything else is fake ig, lol??? All the lies people yell in my inbox about the only thing that matters to the show noticing you is "hard work" and not things like skin color and marketability. Ppl will have access to more popularity when they're approved and promoted by racist fandom. It's proven here all the time.

Lincodega barely focused on Louis' blackness or even the topic of race at all in anything they wrote of the show, then was bragging how much they can talk about sexual topics with cast and crew that again are excluding any characters of color in a meaningful way. Tbh it's kind of bizarre and red flaggy how they got hired and influenced so easily to take that job, but white ppl are used to this treatment so they literally think it's something rly professional and different they did somewhere when I saw no evidence of that anywhere. It's not rly that impressive how they were hired tbh, it's just someone who obviously was gonna say yes and wasn't gonna talk about race either, AMC's favorite kind of person!!
