It's funny when the people you can't disassociate with hurt you the most. I've never been called fat (to my face) by anyone except my family. My brother calls me porkchop and fatass and any other term he's picked up from his asshole friends. My mom has always "lovingly" referred to my stomach as my "Buddha belly", poking fun at the way my back is arched and forces my stomach outwards. It's funny when I thought that was okay. I was conditioned to believe I'd always be porkchop and be the "proud" owner of a Buddha belly. It's funny when I realized that I could buy clothes that actually fit me right, I actually looked pretty. It's funny when my mom called me fat but refused to buy me clothes that fit. It's funny when I used to bulge out of a size 8, but that wasn't plus-sized, I was nearly normal then. My mom assured me that I would finally fit in. It's funny when I discovered that I looked good in shorts that were size 12. They were pink and cut shorter than I'd ever felt good in. Nothing I would have worn when I was being forced into a too-small size. And yet I probably got more compliments than I had ever gotten in my life. It's funny when you realize your mom isn't always right. It's funny when you realize you are.
