Lily was 14 when her father died.Ā
She remembered times before, family trips to the zoo, amusement parks, even a trip to Disney World once. A happy family.
Then she remembered being pulled out of class by her mom. She waited at the hospital for 27 hours, sleeping only 2 hours throughout the whole wait. Her mom slept even less. He had been driving to pick up a new bike for her, she had insisted that it was all she wanted for her upcoming birthday, and he crashed.Ā
The doctor came out, and surrounded by vending machine snack wrappers and empty cups and bottles, her family was told there was nothing more that could be done. So he was gone. After that Lily went through a string of therapists and support groups until she could eat or leave her house without feeling entirely empty. After that she knew she wanted to go into psychology, it was the last piece of fatherly wisdom she got for her life, and he had always told her she knew people like nobody else.Ā
Every year on February 27 Lily goes to the church and sits in the pews until she falls asleep- the closest thing she has to religion.Ā
