Today is the first Shani/ Sani (Saturday) of the Tamil month PurattAasi / PeratAshi Shani Kizhmai. We in our community make this rice flour and jaggery sweet and light lamp in it, in ghee! To please Lord Venkateshwara !! This sweet is gluten free ! This is called Maavizakku ! Maavu means Flour and Vizhakku means Oil lamp / wick! This sweet is prepared and the wick is lighted in the Maavu with Ghee !! It is believed that Lord Srinivasa came to earth to give darshanam in this month. It usually done on the 1st, 3rd and 5th OR 2nd and 4th of the Saturday in the PuratAsi month. It is very easy to make and I make as my mom does soaking Rice to preparing rice flour and I never make it with ready made rice flour! Did you watch my Insta story on how I made it! I haven't shown the full process! Here it is..., Soak 1/2 cup rice for 1/2 to an 1 hour it is not any specific time you can soak for more hours! drain completely and Grind the rice to powder form, sieve and the Grind again to a smooth flour! Using 1/2 cup of that flour or completely as you get more than 1/2 cup once it is ground. Mix 1/2 cup Jaggery and cardamom it comes to a dough ball consistency that's it! Your maavu is ready to make Maa Vizakhu!
