These are my own personal opinions. This is how I choose to define each one. You do not have to follow this system nor do you have to agree with it. 

Firstly, for a lot of practitioners a charm bag and a hex bag are one in the same. They’re also known by many other names including: mojo bags // gris-gris bags // conjure bags // medicine bags // wish bags

It’s important to note that some of these names or used by closed religions and are distinctly different in their own rights. 

Technically a hex is defined as a spell but more specifically it defined as a spell casted on someone; to bewitch them. Bewitch is defined as: cast a spell on and gain control over (someone) by magic. So though it is, by definition, similar to the word spell, I wouldn’t consider it a definite synonym.

A charm is more commonly defined as: the power or quality of giving delight or arousing admiration or, a small ornament worn on a necklace or bracelet. But within magick it’s commonly defined as: to control or achieve by magic.

So I’ve chosen to define them as followed:

Hex Bag: A curse placed on someone; to control a person or situation in a way that would negatively affect their life.

Charm Bag: A blessing place on someone; to manifest positive change in someone’s life. 

So, again for me personally, I have decided that separating the 2 would work out better when defining my practice. This makes it easier for me to know when one would be better suited for a certain situation. 

It’s also important to remember that you do not have to use a “bag” or pouch either. You can make hex or charm bottles and boxes too.
