HE WASN’T SURE HOW LONG IT HAD BEEN SINCE HE WAS CAPTURED, without access to the sun or a clock it was hard to keep up with time. his captors didn’t make it easy to track it by meals, considering how randomly and infrequently he fed him. more than likely deliberate, as a means to both keep him alive and make it hard for him to know how much time he’d lost in their care. if Ben had to guess, he would say it’d been a week at least. longer than he was ever supposed to be gone for this trip to find and recover lost artifacts for the second attempt at rebuilding something lost.
this was a place he’d been to before, when he’d been the Supreme Leader. because of this he was hesitant to return after the damage he’d caused to the colony that resided on the planet where the Jedi once stood strong. it was this connection to the Jedi, and the community’s own strangely strong connection to the Force that drew him there. they hardly possessed the strength to be like the dead they worshiped, but they weren’t disconnected from the Force like most in the galaxy.
his identity had been kept hidden quiet well despite his time without his mask, most of the galaxy believed that Kylo Ren was dead and no longer had any reason to fear seeing his face in a crowd. he could pass unnoticed as he got back into the life of Ben Solo, those who did know the truth were more inclined to let the story of Kylo Ren’s death remained unchallenged in the name of keeping the fragile peace they’d created. he was trying to change, he didn’t want to go back to what he’d been before. for all intents and purposes, Kylo Ren was dead.
but this community’s connection to the Force was stronger than he’d give them credit for, and they’d recognized him. their anger had been palpable, and despite his attempts to find a peaceful resolution, he’d been captured and placed in a cell, nearly strangled with the Force-dampening collar they forced around his neck.
Ben couldn’t fault them for their anger. he knew he deserved everything they threw at him, and much more. there was a guilt he carried with him, heavy on his shoulders and heart and difficult to find reprieve from. there was something he would never say to his bondmate, and that was the fact that his such light sentencing, all things considered, was far more than what he deserved. everything he did to try to undo the harm he’d caused, to help the galaxy towards healing and using his abilities for good, it never felt enough.
with his back against the corner of his cell, the chain binding his hands to the brick surrounding him lay heavily over his shoulder and pooled on his stomach as he breathed deeply in a meditative state to conserve his energies. the pain was nothing he wasn’t used to. as much as he knew their anger was well deserved, Ben spent his time thinking of ways to escape so he could get back. his desire to find Rey and continue to do what he could to do better for the galaxy the only things keeping him going. it was the only thing that had kept him going since Exegol, when he survived something he honestly hadn’t expected to survive. he’d made a promise to himself to make the most of this second chance at life, he owed it to everything he hurt, his family who gave their lives to bring him back, to do so.
though, he had no idea how he was going to pull off an escape. without the key to his dampening collar, he’d be left rather vulnerable, and though he still possessed some strength, he couldn’t fight off the enter village and make it back to the Falcon before being overrun. it was quite the predicament he was in.
footsteps approaching his cell broke his chain of thought, and for a moment he assumed they were just that of someone coming to bring him his meal or continue the torture --- or perhaps finally see an end to Kylo Ren once and for all. however, he noted that the footsteps were lighter than anyone he’d dealt with thus far. brows furrowing together, Ben’s eyes opened to look at the door warily as he sat up with a pained grunt. but when a familiar face appeared around the corner, his body went slack with relief.
❝ i was beginning to think you hadn’t gotten my message. ❞ he’d had enough time before the collar muffled his connection to the Force to send a feeling of distress across his bond with Rey. he was relieved to see her for a number of reasons, one of which being that he’d feared that the anger villagers had gotten to Rey before she could get to him.
