          the spirit killeth  ,  but the letter giveth life  .   randall jarrell said that  ,  a take on something old  ,  something biblical  ,  but to robert  ,  it rang more true than any scripture ever had  .  he didn’t think bringing hannah baker a book would cure her  ,  or make the past however many months she’d felt this way go away  ,  but in his typical  ,  ROMANTIC IDEALIST  fashion  ,  he figured just maybe it could be a start  .

                but it wasn’t the move for today  .  wrapped in newspaper under his arm wasn’t anything profound   ( everything with great emotional potency and literary merit felt far too heavy handed  )  .  no  ,  instead he came to see her with  THE WIZARD OF OZ  and  A WRINKLE IN TIME  ,  two of his niece’s old favorites  ,  that would hopefully do something for hannah  ,  be it comfort  or  bring something nostalgia and familiar  to the small hospital room he approached  .  he rapped on the door frame with his free hand  ,  and offered her a smile  .

            ‘  HANNAH BAKER ------  i’m sure you were relieved to have washed your hands of the evergreen poetry club for good  ,  but i was afraid they were going to revolt and overthrow me if i didn’t come down and bring you the card they painstakingly spent hours scribing  .  ’
