NEVER AGAIN : Liep Gony #Community #Memorial Eleven years ago on the 26th September 2007, 19 year-old #LiepGony was beaten to death in a random, racially-motivated attack by two white men at a Noble Park train station in Melbourneās south-east. The attack took place amid heightened racial and political tensions across #Australia, and the two men responsible were identified as being driven by the systemic #racism and fear-mongering being purported by the #government and #media agencies. The #media knowingly agitated the situation by reporting Liepās death as āa result of African violenceā and Kevin Andrews, then federal Minister for Immigration and Citizenship, used Liepās death as an excuse to say that āAfricans canāt integrateā and severely cut African immigration accordingly. It was only after their political goals were achieved that the government begrudgingly admitted Liepās death was in fact a racist attack, but never bothered to say anything further; such was the political scare campaignĀ Ā hauntingly familiar to what we are seeing today. Liepās #mum and #family are #heartbrokenĀ Ā to seeĀ Ā this same divisive #political rhetoric𤮠recently and wish for no other family to ever again have to lose their child as a tragic consequence of racial vilification. To mark the 11th anniversary of Liep's death, #Melbourne and the African-Australian #community stood as one with Leipās family in solidarity and vowed that they will no longer tolerate, and no longer be silent about, the vile racial scapegoating in our communities, and in unison said 'never again' to the #violence that killed Liep.Ā āšæššæ #LiepGony #RestInPower #RIP #AfricanAustralian #present #practice #Passion #Love #equality #PeoplePower #humanrights #blm #bethechange #activism #weoutchea #resist š£ļø #STANDĀ @djkwenda @theelectricvegan @afrodownunder (at Parliament of Victoria) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bo6V8yYhjC-/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=927iwycp8dzf
