So, the other day, thelifeguardlibrarian asked,

What do you think of the changes they’re planning to make on the building?

The short answer is AWESOME.

It almost doesn't matter what they change about our library. Right now, our historic building is so full of quirks that just learning the ropes requires its own orientation. For instance, in our current digs:

Yes, there is a public bathroom, but since it is upstairs (and thus completely unsupervised), we're going to require your ID and that only one person go up there at a time.

No, there is not a water fountain.

Yeah, we have to push the elevator button for you. Up here at the circ desk.

No, there is no security for two of our three exits, so we have to keep our CDs and DVDs locked up or they will melt right away.

No, you may not go into the basement/former children's room (I really had to say this last week), because the black mold is rampant. Also, it is very spooky.

And yet when people visit our library for the first time, they're often dismayed to know that we're moving out and that it's been tampered with at all. Our century-old library has some pretty prominent historic murals (though a bit Parks & Rec for my taste) and is situated in a sweet little park. You can tell it was once really lovely, though the wood of the stairs is worn and the skylights are covered. That part will stay, though, and in addition, we'll get a much more functional space.
