Happy Lunar New Year!
Chinese New Year started on Sunday, January 22.
These images are from the publication entitled “潍坊民间孤本年画” (Folk New Year pictures extant in Weifang) in our Rübel Asiatic Research Collection.
Weifang is one of the Creative Cities of Craft and Folk Art recognized by UNESCO. The first kite took flight in Weifang 2400 years ago, and it became the center of Buddha statue making around the 5th and 6th centuries. Since the 18th century, Weifang has been the capital for craft and folk art in northern China. It is famous for producing kites, Chinese New Year paintings, paper cuttings, peach pit carvings, and silver inlaid paintings.
