The Statue of Liberty, originally known as “The Liberty that illuminates the world”, was a gift from France to the United States for the centenary of its independence, on July 4, 1776. It was commissioned by the French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi.
His arrival in the United States took place in 1886, 110 years after American independence was declared. It traveled by boat disassembled into 350 pieces. In October of that same year the inauguration ceremony took place on Liberty Island, New York. The statue functioned as a lighthouse between the date of its assembly and 1902. The lighthouse was designed with the classic appearance of the goddess Libertas from Roman mythology. The statue's crown of solar rays is based on the Greek Goddess Hecate, bearer of the torch and protector of the entrances to the towns. The left hand of the statue holds a book whose cover is engraved on US Independence Day in Roman numerals. For the face, the face of the author's mother, Charlotte Bartholdi, was used as a model.
