For your gilded cage au, will there ever come a point where the deal is done, both of the twins have reached their goals, so Liam can now leave if he wants? Do the twins think about this a lot and plot about ways to have Liam never leave even after they reach all their goals, especially as they near closer?
(Ford panics and be like "let's keep him here forcibly through scientific means" and Stan's like "no of course not, calm down. We're just going to manipulate him.")
Yes! That's actually a plot point in this AU and where things come to a head. The boys had achieved their respective goals and now Liam is no longer bound by the deal that he made with them.
Fortunately (or unfortunately, in Liam's case) the boys had prepared for this day and had spent literal years cultivating the impression that they just simply cannot function without Liam, they're a mess if he's not there keeping everything in order. Which is totally false, they are fully capable of maintaining their positions without help.
But they don't want to.
Basically, they use Liam's reluctant attachment to them against him, because he feels responsible for these two morons and he would feel some type of way if either of them were to die prematurely. Mostly angry because Liam put a lot of time and effort into getting them to where they wanted to be, but there would be a familiar grief and sadness too.
So what's Liam to do other than stick around?
