the announcement has been everywhere for days.

liam lawson → vcarb. yuki tsunoda → red bull.

it’s printed on every headline, looping on every screen in the paddock, whispered through garages and hospitality suites like gospel. and now they’re sitting next to each other in a press conference, along with isack and max.

liam stares straight ahead, hands clasped, jaw tight. the red bull logo behind him feels like a joke he’s not allowed to laugh at.

“liam,” a reporter says, “how does it feel knowing you’re being demoted to visa cash app racing bulls next season?”

he blinks once. “it’s still formula one. i’m grateful to be here.” a beat. “and yuki,” another voice cuts in, “this must be everything you’ve worked for. how does it feel to finally step into the senior red bull team?”

yuki’s eyes light up. he can’t help it. “it’s… unreal,” he says. “i’ve dreamed of this for a long time.”

liam’s jaw clenches. max leans back in his chair, arms crossed, he's watched this second redbull seat curse too many people and it will continue to do so. isack pretends to fix his mic and looks at the ceiling.

“liam,” a journalist presses, “do you feel like this move was fair, considering your performances this season?” liam’s lips press into a thin line. “decisions get made,” he says carefully. “not everyone agrees with them but i'm not the boss. i'm the employee who got employed by them so. yeah.” his eyes flick, sharp, to yuki.

yuki falters. “i mean—we both worked hard!” he says, trying to soften it. “it's not like i magically got the seat without hard work. and we can't always get what we want."

liam lets out a breath that’s almost a bitter laugh. almost.

max clears his throat loudly. “it's racing,” he says. “nothing stays the same forever.” isack nods too quickly when agreeing, the poor frenchman.

another reporter raises her hand. “do you think this will change the dynamic between you as friends?” liam doesn’t look away from the table. “everything changes.” he says. the words land heavier than they should. yuki glances at him, confused, but liam is already looking back at the cameras, expression locked in place. the tension is new. and neither of them knows yet how much worse it’s going to get.

liam is halfway through stealing isack’s fries when he freezes.

isack raises his eyebrows at him. “if you’re about to say those are yours, they are literally not.”

liam doesn’t answer. he’s staring past him, out toward the paddock lounge. isack stares at liam then at where's staring, then back at him, then back at… you. you’re by the coffee bar, laughing at something on your phone while yuki leans against the counter beside you, shoulders almost touching. he says something, you shove him lightly, both of you smiling like idiots.

isack's brows knit. “i've been seeing that girl for the past few races. who's that?"

liam glances once at isack. “oh. that’s y/n.”

isack nods, “she's yuki's girlfriend or something right?”

“nope. but she's his crush and his bestfriend.” liam says. “she hangs around when she visits, sometimes spends time with me y'know."

isack hums. “interesting.” until it clocks to him. "and you're jealous that they're close or?”

liam laughs. “nope. but we've both been down bad for her, its just yuki's obvious and i'm not. nobody in the paddock even knows i like her, except for you now."”

isack lets out a short laugh. “so you've been crushing on yuki's crush?”

“i guess so mate. she was a fan of danny ric, met her when i was filling in for danny in singapore. yuki met her later on in his career. so i met her first. liam looks back at you and yuki. something shifts behind his eyes.

“uh… huh.,” isack says.

liam narrows his eyes. “why are you "uh-huh"ing?”

isack's lips curve. “he took your seat. seems only fair you take something back.”

liam groans. “i'm not using her as a revenge tool."

"but you want her liam."

"i do. i know."

"you lost the seat, you don't wanna lose the girl too, do you?"

the coffee shop smells like roasted beans and warm pastries, the late afternoon sun spilling golden light across the tables. it’s quiet, almost peaceful—too peaceful for the chaos you left behind at the paddock.

liam sits across from you, fingers wrapped around a warm mug, elbows on the table. you stir your latte, not really seeing the swirls in the foam. your mind keeps drifting back to earlier—yuki, sharp and frustrated, the word “shut up” still echoing in your ears.

“he really said that?” liam asks, leaning back. his tone is casual, but his eyes are watching you, waiting.

you shrug, a little small. “yep. out of nowhere. i think… it’s because he’s frustrated. with the races, with… everything, probably.”

liam hums thoughtfully. “that’s what you think.”

you glance at him. “what else could it be?”

he leans forward, resting his elbows on the table, voice dropping just a little. “it’s not the race, not really. it’s… you.”

you blink. “me?” your voice is soft, tinged with confusion.

“yeah.” he smiles faintly, but there’s no teasing in his eyes. “your post about baku. everyone saw it, loved it… your post about my finish. but you didn’t post yuki’s p6 finish.” your stomach twists. “so… he’s upset with me?” liam nods slowly. “yep. he overthought it. probably felt… forgotten, invisible, like you were praising me and not him.”

you look down at your mug, fingers tightening around the handle. “he… he’s always so hard on himself, isn’t he? i should’ve… i don’t know… said something.” liam’s voice softens, almost quietly. “he’s not mad at you. it’s just… him. racing, pressure, overthinking… it all stacks up. and you posting that? it just tipped the balance for him, that’s all.”

you swallow, staring at the warm light on the table. “i just… i don’t like seeing him like that. like he’s holding all this in, and i can’t fix it.” liam leans back, watching you carefully. “well, he did talk about it… to pierre. pierre let it slip to isack. and isack—being isack—told me. so i know. you’re not alone in caring about him.”

a quiet laugh escapes you, small and bittersweet. “of course he’d tell someone else first.”

“classic yuki,” liam says, smirking, but it’s softer this time, less cocky. “but hey… you didn’t do anything wrong. he just… overthinks everything.”

you look up at him, a little relieved, a little sad. “i know. i just wish he would tell me. instead of snapping.”

liam tilts his head, like he’s calculating something. “sometimes emotions get the best of us. but he had no right to tell you to shut up." he reaches for your hand and caresses it. and for some reason, your stomach does a little flip.

the garage is too loud. radios crackle, engineers shout, tyres squeal somewhere down the pit lane—but yuki can’t hear any of it over the blood pounding in his ears.

he doesn’t even realize he’s walking fast until he’s already there.

“LAWSON?”

liam looks up from his phone.

for a second, neither of them speaks. yuki’s chest is rising too quickly, hands shaking like he’s just stepped out of the car after a bad stint.

“what the hell is this?” yuki says, shoving his phone forward. the picture of you and liam kissing fills the screen.

liam’s eyes flick to the screen, then back to yuki. he smirks, slightly.

“what about it?” he says smugly.

the word feels like betrayal all on its own.

“why would you—” yuki’s voice cracks. he swallows hard. “she’s my best friend. i trusted you. i told you things i’ve never told anyone.”

liam exhales slowly. “yeah. but we've been fading, and i'm not here to make friends, i'm here to win, and obviously i've won her.”

yuki lets out a bitter laugh. “don’t make this about you.”

liam straightens. “it is about me.”

yuki scoffs. “you don’t get to say that.”

“i do,” liam snaps, cutting him off. “because i liked her first.”

the world tilts.

yuki stares at him. “what?”

“i met her before you ever did,” liam says, voice low but shaking. “before she ever came to races with you. i just stayed quiet. i watched you fall for her. i told myself i could handle it.”

yuki shakes his head, chest burning. “then why now?”

liam’s mouth twists. “because i’m tired of losing.”

the words hit too close to home.

yuki steps forward, voice trembling. “this isn’t a game. she’s not something you take when you’re angry.”

“i know,” liam says, but his eyes are hard.

“then why—”

“you took my seat,” liam cuts in, sharp and raw. “and i’m not letting you take the girl too.”

the silence that follows is deafening.

yuki’s breath stutters. he blinks fast, jaw tightening like he’s trying not to fall apart right there.

“you think i wanted this?” he whispers. “you think i wanted to be dropped? to be a reserve? to watch everyone move on without me?”

liam looks away.

yuki’s voice breaks. “racing is all i’ve ever had, it's my life and when y/n came, she became my life too. and now—now my seat's been taken and she's being taken too?”

liam says nothing.

yuki lets out a shaky breath. “you’re unbelievable.”

liam finally looks back. “like you said, tsunoda, "we can't always get what we want.".”

yuki stands there, heart pounding, then turns and walks away, boots echoing in the hollow garage, tears burning in his eyes.

some losses don’t show up on the leaderboard.

but they still hurt the most.

You woke up to the loud, annoying sound of your ringtone. You groaned, squeezing your eyes shut and moving your hand all around your bed to find your phone, grumbling to yourself, "Are you fucking kidding me?"

Once it hit your hand, you picked it up and squinted at the bright light that was now burning your eyes. Soon enough, they began adjusting to the light and you saw Liam's name on your phone. 

Your heart began beating out of your chest and the butterflies started to spread around in your tummy. Why the hell was he calling you 2:00 in the morning?
