To people taking Online Classes that require video chat:
Do not assume that everyone is okay with showing their faces on camera. You donât know them personally and not everyone likes the camera. Some reasons might be:
Theyâre camera shy.
Cameras scare them.
They feel uncomfortable/overwhelmed
Theyâre not in a good environment to do so.
Theyâre insecure about seeing themselves/others seeing them.
They might be eating and want to eat without attention them/You donât have to know what theyâre eating every time you see them.
The place theyâre in is a mess and donât feel like having that seen as their background.
Please PLEASE just understand that some people prefer to not turn their cameras on and is content with listening in on the class. Donât say itâs âOnly fair!â just because youâre able to do so. Respect other people and please remember that everyone has their own level of comfort.
Iâm saying this because a classmate of mine was completely inconsiderate of everyone elseâs feelings and comfort towards video chat. They and the professor think that all students should have cameras on despite the discomfort students have. I am one of those students. I do not like the camera as I am an insecure shy mess and I eat breakfast at the same time as I do class so I turn the camera off so no one sees me eating. Itâs to be polite but also so I donât get any unwanted attention me. So please understand that if some students want their camera off, leave them be. You can check in on them but donât force them to be on camera if they arenât comfortable.
