âDo youâ would you want toâ come upstairs?â he asked.
Spencer stood in front of her, unsure of what to do with his hands. Y/N was absolutely radiantâ bathed in the very last of the golden daylight and more beautiful than he even remembered. All he wanted to do was hug her again and never let go.
She shook her head, and he tried not to instantly deflate. âI have to feed Roald.â She smiled a little at him and restarted his heart. âBut would you want to come over? We could order somethiââ
âYesâ yes.â She let out a quiet laugh at his eagerness, and he wanted to hear that sound every day for the rest of his life. âCan Iâ I just want to drop this stuff off and change, and then Iâll, um.â He gestured vaguely to her. âShould I drive you or do you want to walk or I can justâ meet you? Whateverâ whatever you want.â
âIâm gonna head back now and take care of Roald. Take your time, and justâ well, here.â She held out her hand. âIâll put my number in your phone, and you can just text me when youâre on your way.â
He fumbled the phone out of his pocket, placed it into her outstretched hand, and nearly vibrated with the way her fingers brushed over his. She stared at the unsophisticated phone in her hand. âYou werenât kidding about the technology thing, huh?â
He ran a hand down the back of his neck and shrugged. âI prefer to keep things simple.â
âI havenât seen a T9 keyboard since I was in high school. This is a relic,â she laughed and then gave him a soft smile. âAnd⊠very you.â
He watched her fingers as she pressed along the tiny keys, still sort of in shock that she was here, that he was getting a second chance, that she wanted to do this with him. She handed the phone back to him and then stuffed her hands in her pockets. âSo, Iâll see you in a little bit?â
He nodded and gave her his best smile. She stepped forward into his space, and his eyes went a little wide as she leaned up and pressed a quick kiss to his cheek. She stepped back with a smile, then waved and turned on her heel headed to her car.
He stood rooted to the spot until she had disappeared from view, then let out a long breath and looked down at the small screen of his phone at her contact information. His lips twitched at the name sheâd given herself.
Miss Honey <3
âŠ
Forty five minutes later, Spencer smoothed down the front of his cardigan and blew out a sigh. Heâd spent five of those minutes reveling in the magic that was Y/N, and the other forty convincing himself that sheâd already changed her mind. But he was a man in love, and so he was standing in front of her building, willing himself to press her buzzer.
He was jolted out of his stupor by the buzzing of his phone. He pulled the device from his pocket and saw her name on the tiny screen, hesitating only a moment before pressing the button to answer. âHi.â
âHi.â He could hear her smile through the tinny speaker, and it immediately set him at ease. âI was just checking to make sure you remembered where you were going.â
âYeah, Iâ Iâm outside now, actually,â he confirmed.
âOh, great! Iâll buzz you up.â
The door buzzed open, and Spencer pocketed his phone, stepping into the small foyer. He wiped his sweaty hands on his pants as he made his way to the staircase. He had barely taken the first step when she called, âItâs the third floor!â
He barely resisted the urge to take the stairs two at a time. When he reached the landing of the third floor, she was standing in the doorway in a purple sweatshirt, sweatpants, and fuzzy socks with dragons on them. He couldnât help but grin.
âHey.â She returned his smile. âCome on in.â She moved aside and waved him into her apartment.
He stepped over the threshold, and she closed the door behind him. âI can take your coat. Feel free to leave your shoes there. Roald will be in hiding for the next half hour or so,â she informed him.
He shrugged out of his coat and handed it to her, looking briefly around the tidy space. The walls of her living room were a calming mint green, adorned with plenty of art and photographs. Her couch was a blush pink velvet, exactly as soft as she was.
âOkay, Iâm starving,â she admitted, turning to hang his coat in the coat closet. âWe can order pizza, Indian, Thaiâ any preference?â
He shook his head. âNo, whatever you want.â
She closed the closet door and cocked an eyebrow. âSo if I wanted to order a huge pizza with extra cheese, youâd be cool with that?â
âSure, absolutely,â he nodded.
She tilted her head. âEven with your dairy thing?â
He was surprised that she even remembered such a tiny detail from all those months ago, and his heart would have fluttered if he wasnât so focused on making as few waves as possible. He still couldnât shake the feeling that sheâd made a mistake letting him back in, and he didnât want to do anything that would cause her to rethink her decision. âWell, itâsâ itâs just a sensitivity, not a true allergy. Although itâs gotten a bit worse in recent years. But really, whatever you want to do is fine.â
He suddenly struggled to make eye contact, feeling overwhelmingly awkward and out of place. Now that he was here in her apartment, it was only a matter of time before the other shoe dropped. He cracked the knuckles on each finger as he waited for it. She let out a small sigh, and he braced himself for impact.
âWhy donât you come sit?â
Her voice was quiet, and then her hand on his arm was soft, and she was leading him to the couch and sitting down next to him. She kept some distance between them, placed her hands in her lap, and then she was still for a long moment. He could feel her eyes on him, but he wasnât sure what to say. He didnât know if she wanted him to say anything at all.
âYou know I forgive you, right?â The question was tentative. He met her eyes, and he didnât see the regret or pity that he expected. There was something else there; something he couldnât quite decipher. âBecause I do. Forgive you. You apologized, and you meant it, and you allowed me space and time to process. And thatâsâ thatâs all I could have asked for.â
As seemed to always be the case, the task of articulating what he was feeling began to crush him under its weight. The words were there, but he couldnât get the order right. If it were anyone else, he would have just evaded the conversation entirely. But heâd promised her that he would try. After everything heâd put her through, she deserved that much.
He breathed in through his nose, expelling it in a sigh. âIâve justâ Iâve spent the last month thinking about thisâ about youâ pretty much exclusively,â he admitted, staring at his hands. âAnd Iâm just realizing that I never really⊠allowed myself to think about what would happen next, because I wasnât sure that this would happen at all.â He gestured between them and then looked at her. âAnd now Iâm hereâ with you, and I justâ itâsâŠâ He let out a sigh.
âDoesnât live up to expectations?â she prompted.
His eyes went wide, and he moved closer to her on the couch. âNoâ god, no.â He instinctively reached for her hand, felt that electricity again when she allowed him to lace their fingers together. He was already making a mess of things. âYou always exceed expectations.â He shook his head, and she squeezed his hand. âI justâ I donât⊠I donât wanna mess this up.â
She covered their intertwined fingers with her other hand, rubbed her thumb along his. âI donât think you will. Something tells me you donât typically make the same mistake twice,â she inferred.
He laughed a little at that, and she gave him a sweet smile, and then she said, âSo, no pizza. How about Indian?â
âŠ
They were just cleaning up the last of the take out containers when Roald made his way out of Y/Nâs bedroom.
âThere he is! Hey, buddy,â she cooed, leaning down to give Roald a quick pet. She gave Spencer a sheepish smile. âHe takes a while to warm up to new faces, so donât be offended if heâs notââ
She was stopped mid-sentence by Roaldâs decision to make a beeline for him. The cat stopped to give a cursory sniff before weaving between Spencerâs legs, purring loud enough that they could both hear it. Her mouth dropped open a bit as he leaned down to scratch between Roaldâs ears.
âHeâ he is never that friendly,â she said incredulously. âThere really is something about you, Dr. Reid.â
He looked up at her with a smile. âIâm just glad he approves. Would have been kind of awkward otherwise.â
âHeâs a very good judge of character, so that bodes well for you,â she confirmed.
âOh yeah?â Spencer scratched underneath Roaldâs chin, grinning at the contented cat. He brought his gaze back to her, standing back to his full height when he realized sheâd moved⊠a lot closer. His tongue darted out to wet his lips, and he watched her eyes track the motion.
âYeah.â
He thought back to that night nearly two months ago, the way his mouth had verged on violent when sheâd kissed him. He hated that their first kiss was tainted with his foolishness, that heâd marred that memory for them both. He couldnât take it back, and he wasnât certain that she wanted to kiss him now, but he couldnât stop himself from asking.
âCan I kiss you?â
âYes, please,â she breathed.
He brought his hands to her face and used a gentle grip to pull her in. She rested her warm palms against his waist and let her fingers dig in, holding herself steady as his lips met hers.
He kept the kiss as soft as she deserved, opening his mouth to let her in but letting her lead and take him wherever she wanted to go. Her hands slid around to his back, and she tugged him in closer. He left one hand cradling her face but moved the other to the small of her back and pulled her flush against him.
She huffed out a tiny breath against his mouth, her lips turning up in a smile that he could feel in his toes. She brought one hand up to his jaw, rubbed her thumb across his cheek and then wound her fingers into his hair. She tangled them in his curls and tugged just enough to break the kiss, pressing their foreheads together with a sigh.
âIf itâs all the same to you, I think Iâm just gonna wipe our first kiss from my memory and replace it with that one,â she murmured.
âIâm very much on board with this rewrite,â he agreed.
âExcellent.â She used the hand in his hair to pull him forward into another quick kiss. Roald made his presence known at their feet with a loud meow, pulling a laugh from both of them.
They de-tangled themselves from each other, and she ran a hand through her hair. âItâs getting late.â He nodded in agreement, although he never wanted this night to end. And then she continued, âDo you wanna, umâ do you wanna stay the night? Iâm sure I can find some comfy clothes thatâll fit you.â
Heâd been a ship on a turbulent sea for the past two months, just barely staying afloat at times. It had been heart wrenching and nerve wracking and terrifyingâ and all of his own doing. And in one night, sheâd anchored his vessel amongst the crashing waves. A solution kit, a hug, forgiveness, a kiss, and now this.
His racing mind came to a standstill. The near constant noise was quieted. The turbulent sea became calm, still waters.
âIâd really, really like that.â
âŠ
Spencer ended up in an XXL t-shirt from a school fundraiser and a pair of stretchy bike shorts. Y/N had managed to scrounge up a new toothbrush from the back of the cabinet, and they brushed their teeth together with foamy smiles in the bathroom mirror.
It had taken very little convincing for Spencer to agree to share the bed. Y/N climbed in under the covers, settling back against the pillows and turning down the duvet for him to join her. He held up one finger and disappeared out into the living room, returning a minute later with the solution kit in hand. He moved to the bed, sliding in between the soft sheets and pulling up the duvet.
He leaned back against the pillows and turned toward her, opening the box. âThis is the most incredible thing anyone has ever done for me,â he admitted. âCan you, umâ explain them to me? Some of them I figured out, but othersâ well, I just want to hear you, really.â
She scooted closer to him and leaned over to look in the box. âThe first few are pretty self-explanatory. This one,â she said, pulling out a picture of her with her hands over her heart and belly, âis taking deep breaths until youâre calm and ready to try again. This one is reading a favorite bookâ which I know will take you about five minutes,â she joked.
She retrieved the card with the clip art book, and then the one behind it with a pencil and paper. âYou can try to write down the difficult thoughts and feelings to get them out of your headspace.â The next card had a picture of an old rotary phone. âHmmm, almost a match to the dinosaur phone you actually have,â she teased. âBut itâs an option to call someone. Could be your mom, or a friend, orââ
âOr you? Could I call you?â
She looked up to find his eyes on her and smiled. âYeah. You can call me, too.â She pressed a soft kiss to his mouth, andâ not for the first time that nightâ he could not believe how lucky he was.
She drew back to pull out the next card: a clip art rendering of a desktop computer. âOh! This one is for researching something. I know youâve got a seemingly endless encyclopedia of knowledge up there,â she tapped on his temple, âbut thereâs always something new to learn. And teaching yourself something can help you feel capable in moments where youâre feelingâ a little helpless.â
There was also a small wooden puzzle cube in the box. She took it from the box and held it up in front of them. âI know your IQ will probably solve this thing in fifteen seconds, but at least itâll be a nice fidget toy,â she laughed.
The last card in the box was a picture of a timer. âThis one might seem kind of dumb, but sometimes it helps me to set a timer to remind myself that feeling shitty is a temporary state of being.â She held the card between her fingers and shrugged. âEven if Iâm still feeling less than great after the timer goes off, it usually gives me the boost I need to move forward.â
She gathered all the cards in her hands, shuffling them and then placing them back in the box. âYou can add your own options as you think of them. This was just a starter set.â
He closed the lid of the box and set it on the bed between them. He reached for her hand, and she immediately threaded their fingers together. He rubbed his thumb along her impossibly soft skin and took a deep breath.
âThe timer isnât dumb. I, umâ I did something similar in prison.â She squeezed his hand. âI kept track of theâ the days on this little spot on the wall. Every time it felt like I couldnât take another day, Iâd count the marks and remind myself that Iâ that Iâd survived that long. That I could make it another day.â
He went quiet, and Y/N sat up a little in bed, brushed her free hand over his hair. âWe donât have to talk about it if you donât want to.â
âI want to.â It wasnât a lie. He wanted to talk to her about it. He wanted to talk to her about everything. He wanted to let her into the shadowy corners of his mind that he kept from everyone else.
âIf youâre sure, then Iâm right here.â She pulled their intertwined fingers into her lap and leaned over to press a kiss to his shoulder.
When she pulled back, he let out a long breath. He watched her thumb as it traced an unwavering line across the back of his hand. âI was, umâ I was in Mexico getting an experimental Alzheimerâs drug for my mom. Iâd been going down there for a few months, and it wasnât ideal, but the medication really seemed to be helping her. And I was justâ I was desperate. Desperate for anything that would give me more time with her. More lucid, meaningful time, you know?â
She nodded. âYeah. I do.â
âIt wasnât the, uhâ drug that got me arrested,â he admitted. âThere was an unsubâ one of the serial killers that we put away a few years agoâ a psychopathic, narcissistic hitwoman who had thisâ I donât know, vendetta against me, I guess. She, umâ she manipulated another woman into drugging me and framing me for the murder of the doctor I was getting the medication from.â
He could feel her eyes on him, and he drew his brows together. âI know theâ the whole thing sounds completely absurdâ fictional even,â he admitted. âShe used a mix of drugs called sevoflurane and scopolamine to trigger dissociation and hallucination, which made it reallyâ um... For a long time, I couldnât tell which of my memories were real and which were drug-induced delusions.â
He focused on the motion of her thumb against his skin. âThe team got me out of the prison in Mexico, but because I went against FBI protocol when I crossed the border, the Bureau wouldnât fund my legal representation here. Emily hired a great lawyer, but the judge was less than sympathetic. And it really, umâ snowballed from there.â
He took a deep breath. âI was sent to Millburn, which is a maximum security prison, and then I didnât get the protective custody detail, so I was in general population, but I didnât want to hurt people or move drugs, so I got the shit kicked out of me for a while, and then my friend Luis was killed in front of me, and Iââ
Spencer didnât realize he was crying until Y/Nâs hands were on his face, wiping the tears before pulling him into her arms. âA-and then I poisoned the drugs, which just ended up hurting a bunch of people who didnât deserve to get hurt. And then I got outed as an agent, and my mom got abducted, and I stabbed myself to get put in solitary, but I wasnât safe there either, and I really thought... I was sure I was going to die there.â
He wrapped his arms around her middle and tucked his face into her shoulder as the hurricane of his agony swirled and raged and then swept out as quickly as it rolled in. She soothed his cries and held him against her, never rushing or shushing him. Eventually, his weeping dwindled to quiet sniffles, his heaving breaths faded to drawn sighs. She kept him anchored through all of it, rocking him gently from side to side and calming his shattered frame.
When he finally quieted, she released him and pulled back just enough to meet his eyes. His chest tightened at her tear-stained cheeks, and he brought his hands up to wipe at them uselessly. When his hands fell back to his lap, she sniffled a little before taking a deep breath, releasing it on a shaky sigh.
âThe choices you made kept you alive, Spencer. They wereâ Â impossible, horrific choices that Iâm sure justââ She shook her head, searching for the right words. âIâm sure the weight of the guilt and grief has to be unbearable sometimes,â she surmised. âAnd thereâs nothing I can say that will make that any less true.â
She cupped his face in her hands, swiping at the fresh tears with her thumbs. âBut Iâm... Iâm so selfishly thankful for every choice you made. Because it was the perfect set of decisions in that it brought you here. To meâŠâ The tears tracked hot down her cheeks, and she took a shaky breath. âAnd I feel so unbelievably lucky and so incredibly grateful to have you.â
He had her wrapped up in his arms before sheâd even finished the sentence. âI never believed in luck,â he mused. He pressed a kiss into her hair and closed his eyes. âIâm still not sure if I do. But I can tell you that Iâm the luckiest.â

The sound of Spencerâs ringtone pierced through the early morning quiet, shrill and disconsolate. Y/N hummed against his chest, shifting as he clumsily reached across to the bedside table to answer it.Â
âHey,â he croaked, voice still smothered in sleep. âMm... When?â He paused, and she could almost make out the answer on the other end. âGot it. Yeah.âÂ
He carefully set the phone back on the bedside table, and then his arms came around her shoulders. He let out a long sigh, the one sheâd gotten quite used to over the last year and a halfâ the one that meant he had to go. She squeezed him around the middle and let out her own sigh. âCase?â
âYeah.â He ran light fingers down her arm. âJetâs taking off in ninety minutes.â
She glanced at the bedside table to the alarm clock that read 4:57am. They both knew he needed to leave within the next half hour if he was going to make it on time, but neither one made any effort to move. Instead, they breathed together in the pre-dawn stillnessâ a single moment of peace before the world and all its ugliness could crash through the fortress theyâd constructed around their space and around each other.
âI donât wanna go,â he whispered.Â
âI know.â She pressed a kiss over his heart through his t-shirt. âI know.â
âIâm gonna miss everything,â he lamented. âAppointments, and milestones, and firsts, and Iâ Iâm gonna miss all of it.â
She lifted her head at the tears in his voice. âHey.â She shifted in the circle of his arms to prop herself up on his chest. âYouâre not gonna miss all of it. Youâll miss this one appointment. And itâsâ itâs not even an important one,â she assured, gentle fingers swiping away the lone tear that had managed to escape over his lash line.Â
âYes, it is.â He shook his head. âThey're all important.â
She gave him a sympathetic smile, leaning forward to press a quick peck to his lips before sitting up and deciding to reassure him in the only way she knew how. âOkay, doctor. Eleven weeks. Tell me what weâre gonna find out today.âÂ
She pulled him up out of bed, interlacing their fingers and pressing their shoulders together. As she led him to the bathroom, he explained, âDr. Layton will do the first ultrasound, and Baby will look more like a baby now. At around ten weeks they made the transition from embryo to fetus. Theyâll be about two inches long.âÂ
She handed him his toothbrush and turned to grab his toiletry go-back from the linen closet, stifling a yawn. âMmhm. What else?â
âDid you know theyâre breathing now?â he asked, and she smiled at the way the excitement crept into his voice. âBetween weeks ten and eleven, the fetus starts to inhale and exhale small amounts of amniotic fluid, which aids in the development of their lungs. Itâs kind of like theyâre breathing underwater.âÂ
âI didnât know that,â she admitted, turning back to set the bag on the counter. âThatâs pretty amazing. What about the heartbeat?â
He nodded vigorously as he applied toothpaste to the bristles of his brush. âWe should be able to hear it, although sometimes itâs too earlyâ depending on the accuracy of the estimated date of conception.â
He ran the water over the toothbrush before popping it into his mouth. She kissed his shoulder and then moved back into the bedroom, shuffling into their closet for his go bag. She checked it over on her way back to the bathroom, ensuring it had been fully repacked after the last case. She set it on the counter and placed his toiletry bag inside, leaving it open for him to pack his toothbrush and then sitting on the closed toilet lid.Â
He rinsed his mouth and put his travel cap over the head of his toothbrush, gesturing with it and then dropping it into the bag. âTheyâll do some routine lab work to test for things like gestational diabetes, and we can also choose to do additional screeners for chromosomal abnormalities and possible complications.â He looked at her then, and she saw the despondence creeping back in. âI should really be there, justâ just in case.â
âHoney.â She stood and held out her hand to him, smiling a little when he accepted it with a squeeze. âItâs gonna be okay.âÂ
He let out a breath and pulled her into his arms, and they held each other in the silence, the soft light from the vanity washing over them. His phone buzzed with an incoming message, and she knew he needed to get on the road. Still, she held him for a second longer, and then they shuffled through the door and into the bedroom together.Â
Y/N made her way back to bed, scooting down under the duvet to preserve the last remaining notes of his body warmth. She watched as he dressed silently, pulling on trousers, socks, a button up and cardigan. He skipped the tie in favor of coming to sit on the bed, bringing his hand to rest lightly over top of her belly over the covers.Â
She covered his hand with her own and laced their fingers together. âMaybe you could ask Luke if you can FaceTime with his phone. You can probably take twenty minutes, right?â
He nodded. âYeah. Yeah, I can do that.â He rubbed a tired hand over his face. âMaybe I should just upgrade my own phone.â
She huffed out a laugh. âOh, I see how it is. Couldnât upgrade for me, but once a baby comes along youâre ready for an iPhone.âÂ
âThatâs notâ youâ you shouldnât have to do all of this alone,â he huffed, and she realized her joke didnât land when his voice cracked at the end.Â
âSpence, Iâmâ Iâm just teasing.â She lifted her hands to his face, pulling him closer and meeting his eyes. âIâm sorry; youâre upset, and that wasnât nice.âÂ
She leaned up to kiss his forehead, letting her lips linger and breathing him in. âBut Iâm not alone. With you, I feelâ the opposite of alone.â
âIrritated?â he offered.Â
âNo,â she laughed. âSupported, and cared for, and loved,â she corrected with a smile. âYouâve been all of that since day one. And I know thatâs not going to change, whether youâre physically present in that doctor's office or not. Right?âÂ
When he nodded, she continued, âI love you. The most. And you are easily the best baby daddy on planet earth. Okay?â
The term of endearment dragged a smile from him, as it always did. âOkay.â
She leaned forward to press her lips to his, both sets upturned and a little dry from sleep. âNow, you need to go, or youâre gonna be late.â
âI know.â He kissed her again, long and slow, and then pulled back to lean their foreheads together. He hesitated for another ten seconds before standing to grab his bag from the bathroom.Â
When he re-emerged, she reminded him, âAsk Luke about the FaceTime thing. Iâm sure he wonât mind, and we can trust him to keep the secret. The appointment technically starts at 1:00, but I probably wonât be seen until at least 1:30.â
He crossed to give her another kiss. âI love you.â He crouched to press a kiss to her tummy. âAnd you.â
âWe love you, too,â she smiled, fingers tangling in his curls. âAnd weâll talk to you in a few hours.â
She kissed him one more timeâ couldnât help herself. And then his warmth was gone from the bed, and the house was suddenly much too quiet. She snuggled back down under the duvet, her head on his pillow and the scent of his shampoo shrouding her senses and easing her mind.
Spencer really was supportiveâ endlessly so. Not overbearing, but interested and involved in every moment: reading all the newest research, bringing home her favorite treats, writing out a color-coded timeline of all the appointments and milestones. She wasnât lying when she called him the best baby daddy. He was always there for her. So much so that the apprehension sheâd had at the beginning of this surprise journey was nowhere to be found.Â
As she drifted back into sleep, there he was againâ she could almost hear the jangling of his keys in the bowl in the entryway, his feet on the stairs, the rustling of his pants and sweater being discarded onto the floor of their bedroom.Â
And then she felt the warmth of his palm low over her tummy, coming to rest over the barely-there bump. She felt his lips on her shoulder and his chest pressed against her back. When she went to cover his hand with her own, her exhausted brain registered that it wasnât a dream at all.
She turned her head, blinking her eyes open to see him smiling at her and drew her brows together. âWhatâs going on?â
He pressed another kiss to her shoulder, snuggling even closer and rubbing his thumb along her belly. âIâm, umâ I told Emily Iâm gonna consult from home on this one.â
âŠ
âOkay, Mom, thisâll just be a little bit cold.â
Dr. Layton smoothed the gel over Y/Nâs lower abdomen, and Spencer moved to thread their fingers together, shifting to stand even closer to the examination table. The ultrasound machine gave off a low hum as the doctor adjusted the wand over her tummy. She felt Spencer press a kiss to her temple and turned to smile brightly at him before turning back to the black and white screen.Â
At her first appointment five weeks ago, sheâd been by herselfâ alone and uncertain and terrifiedâ and sheâd declined the option of the ultrasound. It felt wrong to see the baby before Spencer even knew about them. Now, together with him, with her soon-to-be husbandâ she was more than ready to see their baby for the first time. And she could practically feel Spencerâs excitement next to her, his body nearly vibrating with it.Â
âAh, here they are. Hello, Baby Reid.â Dr. Layton pointed to a small, white figure on the screen. âOkay, right here, you can see their big olâ headâ perfectly normal size for this stage of development,â she assured, eyes deftly scanning the image in front of her. âEverything looks great! Now, Iâm just trying to findâŠâÂ
She adjusted the wand over Y/Nâs tummy, and suddenly a wub wub wub came over the tinny speaker of the machine. âThere we are,â Dr. Layton smiled. âVery strong heartbeat.â
Spencer squeezed Y/Nâs hand, and she felt the drop of a tear on her shoulder. She brought her other hand over to cover their tangled fingers, rubbing her thumb along the skin of his wrist and kissing his arm.Â
Dr. Layton made a slightly perplexed humming sound, moving the wand again and losing the sound of the heartbeat, only to pick it up againâ this time slightly faster. Y/Nâs own heart stuttered a little as the doctor moved the wand again twice more, and then cleared her throat. âIs somethingâ is everything okay?â
She turned to Y/N with a kind smile. âYes, yes,â she confirmed, and then she raised her eyebrows. âJustâ do you hear the difference?âÂ
Spencer tilted his head in consideration, drawing his brows together and straining to hear. The doctor shifted the wand once more, allowing them to hear the two distinct patterns.Â
Two distinct patterns, Y/N realized.Â
Dr. Layton pressed the wand a little more firmly into her abdomen, moved it just slightly. âThose are two different heartbeats.â She pointed to the screen. âAnd those are two different babies. Thereâs a matching set of Baby Reids in there.â
Y/N couldnât stop her jaw from dropping. âIs thereââ She turned to Spencer incredulously. âDo twins run in your family?â
He shook his head silently, eyes wide. âYours?â
âNope,â she squeaked.Â
âThis obviously changes things slightly,â Dr. Layton explained, cleaning up the residual gel. âIâd like to see you every three weeks rather than every four. Then at twenty eight weeks, weâll see how we feel, okay?âÂ
She smiled gently as Y/N and Spencer nodded dumbly. She removed her gloves and stood. âIâm going to give you two a few minutes. Iâll be back with your photos in a bit, and we can talk about any questions you might have.â
The door closed behind her, and the room was bathed in silence. Y/N sat up carefully and swung her legs over the side of the examination table. She looked down at her tiny, unassuming bump and felt a tear slip over her lashes.Â
âAre youâ are you okay?â Spencer whispered.Â
She brought her gaze to his, found them teeming with barely restrained joy and yet the ever-present worry. âWell,â she started. âI, umâ I always imagined two kids.â She brought her hands up to her sweaty cheeks and held her own face between her palms. âI guess this isâ you knowâ just a quicker way to get there.â
Spencer immediately wrapped her in a hug, pressing kisses over her hair, her forehead, her shocked mouth. âTwo babies. Weâre having two babies.â
âTwins, Spence,â she breathed. âTwins.â
He replaced her hands with his own, cradling her face and kissing her sweetly, sighing all of his joy and adoration into her mouth. âI love you. So much. The most.â He lowered himself to press his lips to her belly. âAll of you.â
She used gentle hands in his hair to tilt his face up, meeting his smile with a watery one of her own. âWe love you, too, baby daddy.â
She could see the gears turning as he stood, his hands coming to rest on her hips. âAbout that.â
She raised her eyebrows. âYes?â
âDo you, umâ how difficult do you think it would be to get everyone together this weekend?â
She paused. âYou wanna get married this weekend?â
âYeah, thatâs probably too soon, huh?â He huffed out a sigh, then his eyebrows shot up. âOh, what about next weekend?â
âThatâs just as soon!â she laughed.Â
He furrowed his brow. âNo, itâs not. There's a seven day difference.â
âYouâre really in a rush, huh?â she teased.Â
âWell. I justâ I figure you should really be on my insurance anyway,â he reasoned. âEspecially now that itâsâ now that itâs twins.â
âMm, yes, Iâm sure thatâs the reason,â she grinned.
He let out a long breath, and she watched his eyes journey over her faceâ memorizing every curve and angle, every new wrinkle, every last inch of her. And she knew the reason.Â
âI know itâs just a piece of paper,â he murmured. âIt doesnât really change anything, butâŠâ He used gentle fingers to brush her hair back from her face. âI just⊠really want to be your husband.â
She took her own minute to memorize the way he looked in this moment: her fiancĂ©, the father of her children, the best man sheâd ever known, the absolute love of her life. And she knew her own reason.Â
âThe paper might not change anything,â she agreed. âButâ youâve changed everything.â
He squeezed her hips. âIn a good way I hope.â
âThe best way.â She brought her hands to his face, rubbing her thumbs along his cheeks. âThe best way.â
He closed the distance between them to kiss her with all the honey and magic and reverence he always did. He broke away to lean his forehead against hers with all the warmth and devotion and love he always did. She sighed, and it was all joy and vulnerability and contentment like it always was. And she knew their reasons.Â
She kissed him again, and then murmured against his lips, âYou know Iâm still gonna refer to you as baby daddy, right?â
The laugh erupted from his chest and wrapped itself around her heart, tying tight and secureâ a shield, and a haven, and a refugeâ keeping her safe from every terrible thing.Â
âI wouldnât have it any other way.â

O no! Love is an ever-fixed markÂ
That looks on tempests and is never shaken;Â
It is the star to every wandering bark,Â
Whose worthâs unknown, although his height be taken.

Y/N felt his hands sneaking around her waist, rubbing low over her tummy, and then the press of his warm body along her back. She tilted her head to make room for him to settle his chin on her shoulder, smiling as his hands completed their journey and wrapped her up tight.
âHi.â
âHi,â she answered, pressing their cheeks together.
âAre you almost done?â
âYou made quite the mess, doctor.â It was the last weekend of Spencerâs sabbatical, and he had spent the afternoon cooking all of her favorite foodsâ a sort of preemptive gift for when he was back on the BAUâs unpredictable schedule. Sheâd taken on the responsibility of the dishes in return, which was no easy undertaking considering it seemed as though heâd used every single pot, pan, and utensil in her kitchen.
âIf youâd let me help, youâd be done by now,â he complained, hugging her a little tighter and turning his head to drag his lips across her cheek.
âLet me just finish this pan, and then Iâm all yours.â
He pressed a kiss to her cheek, then another to the spot behind her ear, and one more to her shoulder. Then he propped his chin once more and rubbed his thumbs where they rested against her sides.
She laughed a little as she ran the dish brush along the edges of the pan. âComfy?â
He hummed his confirmation, and she could feel his smile as she lathered the inside of the pan, then rinsed it, and finally drained the sink. She dried her hands on the kitchen towel and turned to face him. He didnât remove his hands, instead just let them glide over her hips and then settle on her lower back.
âThank you for all of that.â She gestured vaguely in the direction of the fridge, packed full of leftovers. âMy mom will be so honored to know you made her pot pie.â
âI could eat it every day for the rest of my life and be very, very happy.â He dropped his gaze and his tongue darted out to wet his lips. âSpeaking of moms, I⊠I was wondering if you, umâ if youâd want to meet my mom?â
Her eyes went a little wide, and he took her silence as an answer, continuing, âYou donât have to. Itâitâs too soon.â
She brought a hand up to cup his chin between her fingers, bringing his eyes back to hers. âI would love to meet your mom.â
âŠ
Spencer shut off the engine of the Volvo, turning in his seat to face her. She tried to settle her nerves without also spurring his own anxiety, which had been quite obviously flaring all morning.
âIâll check in and visit for a few minutes, try to gauge what kind of a day it is, and then Iâll text you to come in or not.â He ran a hand over his face. âI really should have had you drive separate, because if itâs not a good day I donât want you to have to wait around while I visit with her, but sheâs been having a lot of good days recently, andââ
âHoney.â She found his hands where they were clutching a little aggressively at his leg and covered them with her own, running her thumbs soothingly along his skin. âItâs okay. Either wayâ whether I meet her today or we wait for a better dayâ itâs okay.â
He closed his eyes and breathed a relieved sigh. âHave I told you how much I love you yet today?â
âMm, I donât think you have,â she smiled.
He brought her hands up to his mouth, kissing the back of each. âI love you so much. The most.â
âI beg to differ.â She leaned over the console and kissed his nose. âI definitely love you the most.â
âAgree to disagree.â He shifted to meet her lips in a quick kiss. âIâll text you in a few minutes?â
She gave him another kiss. âSounds like a plan.â
Spencer dropped the keys into her hand and then climbed out of the car, closing the door and practically trotting toward the building. She would have laughed if it werenât for the raging anxiety that was nearly suffocating her. She opened her door and put her legs out the side of the car, taking a deep breath and looking out over the parking lot.
Y/N knew that meeting Diana was a good thing. That Spencer wanted her to meet the most important woman in his life was a testament to their relationship. But the closer she got to it, the more she felt completely and totally out of place. What did she have to offer this womanâs remarkable son other than a mountain of student loan debt, an endless supply of expo markers, and an ever growing collection of toilet paper rolls?
She loved teaching kindergarten, and she was the first to defend the profession in most settings. But she was about to be in a room with two of the most brilliant minds on the planet, and she couldnât help but wonder what she would possibly have to contribute. More than that, what would Diana Reid think of her son settling for someone so⊠ordinary?
Her phone buzzed with the incoming text message, and she bit back a sigh.
Spencer: Itâs an incredible day. Sheâs already asking about you.
Y/N turned her face up to the clear blue sky, feeling the sun on her face and taking a deep breath. Then, she hoisted herself out of the vehicle, locking it and turning to walk toward the building. DC was hot and sticky this time of year, and she was grateful for the blast of air conditioning as she entered the facility.
The woman at the front deskâ Suzanna, by her name tagâ smiled kindly at her. âHow can I help you?â
âIâm, umâ Iâm here to visit with Diana Reid.â Y/N began signing into the visitorâs log, smiling a little at Spencerâs hasty signature right above. âHer son is here, tooâ Spencer.â
âAh, yes, you must be Y/N. Dianaâs been so excited to meet you.â Suzanna chuckled lightly at her expression, and Y/N wondered just how much everyone already knew about her. âTheyâre just through thereâ in the sunroom.â
Y/N mumbled her thanks and turned in the direction of the sunroom, smoothing a nonexistent wrinkle from the skirt of her dress. Sheâd spent far too long getting ready this morning, including steaming the dressâ a simple number with a black bodice and a skirt covered in books. It was her own personal nod to the incredible legacy that Diana had leftâ not only as a professor of classic literature, but also as the mother of the most incredible readerâ and manâ sheâd ever met.
And now she had a moment of panic, wondering if maybe it was too on the nose, or if Diana would think it was silly and immature. She briefly considered turning and heading back out to the parking lot, but then Spencer appeared in the doorway to the sunroom, waving his thanks to Suzanna and then positively beaming at her . How could she deny him this?
He held out his hand to her, and she accepted it, instantly more at ease from the simple touch. He pulled her gently into the room, and there was Diana, perched on a floral sofa and looking quite elegant in a soft purple shawl.
She stood immediately, an absolutely radiant smile stretching across her face at the sight of them. Y/N watched as she clasped her hands in front of her and felt Spencer squeeze her hand at the same time.
âY/N,â Diana smiled. âIâve heard so much about you.â
Y/N returned her smile. âIt is such an honor to finally meet you, Mrs. Reid.â
She scoffed and waved her hand. âJust Diana, please.â Y/N saw the moment she noticed the dress, her eyes crinkling a bit at the corners. âI can already tell youâre perfect for my son: the lover of books.â She motioned to the seating area. âCome, sit.â
The three of them sat, Spencer in the armchair just across from them as she and Diana sat on the sofa. Y/N folded her hands in her lap and tried to straighten her posture. Diana leaned back against the couch with a smile.
âI really have heard a lot about you,â she repeated, sliding her eyes over to a blushing Spencer. âSpencer tells me you teach kindergarten.â Y/N nodded, and Diana shook her head. âI deeply admire the patience and energy you must have for that age group.â
Y/N laughed a little. âThey can certainly be a handful. I hear you were a teacher as well.â Her eyes went a little wide at her mistake. âA professor, I mean.â
âOh, yes, yesâ 15th century literature.â Diana tilted her head, considering Y/N with a knowing gaze. âBut teaching is teaching, no matter the age. And where would any of us be without our kindergarten teachers? The ones who teach us the very foundations of learning. Who not only teach us to read and write, but also to inquire and investigate and discover.â
Y/N felt unexpected tears pricking at the corners of her eyes, and she had to take a moment to breathe before speaking. âThank you for saying that. Sometimes people assume that kindergarten is all play doh and finger paint.â
âWhatâs that saying about making assumptions?â Diana pondered.
âIssac Asimov said, âAssumptions are our windows on the world,ââ Spencer offered.
âMm, thank you for that, honey, but the one Iâm thinking of is from an episode of The Odd Couple , I believe,â Diana corrected, winking at Y/N. âWhen you assume, you make an ass of you and me.â
âAh.â Spencer held back a laugh, and Y/Nâs heart felt just a little bit lighter.
Diana smiled brightly at her. âYour students must absolutely adore you.â Diana gestured vaguely to Spencer before continuing, âSpencer loved his kindergarten teacherâ hm, Mrs. Hudson, was it?â
Spencer nodded in confirmation. Diana looked back to Y/N with a slightly mischievous grin. âHis report cards always came back with the note that he was âhelpingâ the other students just a little too muchâ always the professor, even at five years old.â
Spencer let out an indignant squeak, and Y/N laughed. âMy parents got a very similar note.â She gave Spencer a smile. âWe just couldnât help it, apparently.â
âIâm sure it didnât help that heâd been reading for three years before he was even enrolled,â Diana mused. âDid he tell you that he originally considered studying the classics?â Y/N shook her head. âWell. When youâve already read and discussed all the course material, it seems a waste of money, doesnât it?â
âIndeed, I suppose it does,â Y/N agreed.
âOh,â Diana tapped Y/Nâs arm affectionately before gesturing back to Spencer, âand then there was the time that he became so fixated on the idea of becoming a magician that he somehow managed to trap a rabbit in our backyard.â
â Mom ,â Spencer choked out.
âOh my. No, noâ please go on,â Y/N begged, waving her hand dismissively in Spencerâs direction and leaning closer to Diana. âI need all the embarrassing stories.â
Diana let out a lilting laugh. âThe poor thing spent the better part of a weekend in a storage bin while Spencer tried to figure out the top hat trick.â
Y/N turned to him with a bewildered grin. âThe storage bin was well ventilated!â he defended. âAnd she had plenty of food and water.â
âDid you figure out the trick?â Y/N asked.
âNo,â he admitted sheepishly. âMom found out about the rabbit before I could. And you need more than just the hat for the trick anyway.â
âWe fed her one last carrot and then sent her back out to be with the rest of her bunny family, who must have been missing her dearly.â Diana winked at Y/N. âAt least thatâs what I had to tell six year old Spencer.â
âRabbits are incredibly social and live in large colonies, so that actually was most likely the case,â Spencer supplied.
Diana smiled fondly at her son, and Y/N could practically feel the love radiating off of her. âEither way, I had one very sad little boy for the next week or so.â She turned back to Y/N. âWe actually took a break from some of the more... advanced reading material so that I could read him The Tale of Peter Rabbit .â
âA classic in its own right,â Y/N said.
Diana nodded. âIâve always said that childrenâs literature encompasses some of the most profound and imaginative storytelling. We can learn a lot from Peter and Ferdinand.â
âI love Ferdinand!â Y/N gasped. âGosh, thatâs one of my all time favorite books. My mom read it to me when I was little, and I read it to my kids every year.â
Diana threw her hands up. âAnd that right there tells me everything I need to know about your teaching. Wellâ that and everything Spencerâs already gushed about, of course.â
The three of them spent the better part of the afternoon laughing and trading embarrassing childhood stories. Diana was even more lovely than she could have imagined, and Y/N was grateful to be so quickly accepted into the small but incredibly loving family unit.
Every so often, she would catch Spencerâs eyes on herâ soft and content and practically sparklingâ and her heart would leap into her throat. He was uncharacteristically quiet, letting Diana lead most of their side of the conversation, only chiming in here and there to offer context or defend himself in a particularly mortifying tale. Diana unwittingly (or perhaps purposefully) revealed just how much Spencer had spoken about her; she already knew about Y/Nâs home, her family, and most of her interests.
Spencer may have been quiet, but he was also blushing profuselyâ caught in the act of being absolutely enamored with her. Y/N found that she didnât know how to feel about that. She should be happy. She should be thrilled. And in some ways, she was. Being with Spencer had made her the happiest sheâd been in a very long timeâ maybe ever.
It was the happiness that scared her.
She deserved happiness. Thatâs what Anita would tell her. But the way she felt with Spencerâ comfortable, natural, easy â was the rising action. She was still anticipating the climax, the mountaintop, the apex of joy. She hated herself for it, but she couldnât help it. Sheâd learned that every mountain had a valley, and the falling action always dragged her against every jagged stone on the way down. She never failed to plummet from the heights into the depths of where sheâd learned to live, quiet and lonely and a little bit bruised.
This knowledge didn't stop her from soaking up every second of the highs.
âIâm starting to get a little tired,â Diana admitted. She reached across the couch and patted Y/Nâs hand, squeezing gently, and then she looked to Spencer. âI start toâ forget when Iâm tired.â
The smile that had become almost permanent that afternoon faltered slightly, but he nodded and checked his watch. âFour hours is pretty good.â
She hummed. âTheyâve been longer as of late.â
Y/N watched as his nose twitched. âDoes Dr. Kincaid think thatâs good or bad?â
Diana gave him a sympathetic smile. âSheâs not sure.â
It was quiet for a long moment, and then Y/N stood. âLet me give you a minute together.â Diana stood as well, and Y/N clasped her hands together. âI donât think I can articulate how incredibly happy I am to have finally met you. And Iâ I definitely donât have the words to properly thank you for raising such a wonderful man.â
Diana took her hands, squeezing them gently before pulling her into a hug. Y/N returned the embrace, and Diana murmured, âThank you for loving him. Through the highs and the lows.â
Y/N blinked back tears for the second time that day, nodding into Dianaâs shoulder and hugging her tightly.
With a final squeeze, Diana released her, and Y/N excused herself back out into the foyer. She signed out of the visitor log and waved to a grinning Suzanna, and then headed outside to catch her breath. She made it to the car, unlocking it and settling into the passenger seat before leaning over to turn it on and get the windows rolled down.
Spencer emerged from the building, his hands in his pockets. He quickly made his way to the vehicle, practically running across the parking lot and sliding behind the wheel. Before she could even say anything, he was surging across the console to grab her face in his hands and pull her into a kiss.
She steadied herself with her hands on his chest, clutching at his shirt and returning the unexpected passion with a slightly bewildered smile. When he was finished, he pulled back to lean their foreheads together. She caught her breath and asked, âWhat was that for?â
âShe loved you, and I love you, and Iâm so glad you got to meet her.â
She could hear the emotion in his voice, and she slid her arms around his back, pulling him into a hug. âMe, too.â
He leaned into her for a minute longer, breathing into her hair and pressing another kiss to her shoulder. Then he pulled back, smiling widely. âHow would you feel about meeting the other family?â
âŠ
Spencer drove them to meet up with the team at OâKeefeâs, a favorite haunt of theirs on the evenings when theyâd wrapped a case at a reasonable hour. They headed up the sidewalk hand in hand, with Y/N leaning a little into his side. She was feeling slightly more at ease this time around thanks to the buffer of knowing Penelope, Luke, and JJ already.
Spencer held the door open, trailing in behind her with a hand on her waist. She spotted Penelopeâs bright green dress immediately, and Spencer raised his hand in greeting. The group gave them a raucous cheer, and Y/N couldnât help but smile.
Spencer kept his hand on the small of her back as they approached the table. He greeted the group and then turned to Y/N, gesturing around the table. He introduced her to Tara, Matt, and Emily, the three of whom greeted her with warm handshakes. Penelope was practically vibrating with excitement as she scooped her up into a hug.
âGosh dang it, you are just so cute ,â Penelope squeaked. She pulled back from the hug to take stock of Y/Nâs outfit. âThe books, I love it. And the shoes!â
Y/N laughed, twirling her ankle to show off the pink t-strap heels. âIâm definitely going to regret them in about an hour. But they look cute anyway.â
Tara sidled up to the two of them, raising her glass in solidarity. âHereâs to cute shoes and pinched toes.â She took a sip of her scotch and then turned to Y/N. âWhatâs your poison?â
âOh, you donât have to,â Y/N insisted.
Tara waved her hand and gestured to Spencer. âYou got grandpa to come out to the bar. Youâre not paying for a single drink tonight.â
âI come out with you guys!â he squeaked indignantly.
A chorus of exasperated groans made their way around the group, followed by good-natured laughs. Tara raised a single eyebrow in Spencerâs direction, and then turned her attention back to Y/N. âLike I said, you wonât need your wallet tonight. Whatâll it be?â
âŠ
She did not, in fact, have to reach for her wallet at all that evening. Between the seven of them, Y/Nâs cup was always full and her smile was nearly permanent. She heard endless stories about Spencer, complete with photo evidenceâ much to his dismay.
She learned that Tara had a doctorate in forensic psychology, and Emily had worked internationally for years becoming the Unit Chief of the BAU. Luke had been an Army Ranger and a member of the Fugitive Task Force, and Matt had traveled the globe with the International Response Team.
They were all incredibly kind, asking about her family and her work, listening with interest as she recounted growing up on a farm and her days spent teaching kindergarten. Despite their apparent interest, Y/N couldnât help but feel a little⊠silly. Stories of field trips and finger painting felt incredibly juvenile in comparison to the lived experiences of this remarkable team of people.
She did her best to steer the conversation back to the team whenever possible, which in some ways made the whole thing worse. But she managed to keep a smile for the evening, and she lost track of how many drinks made their way down the hatch. Luke ordered an assortment of snack foods for the group, and she gratefully accepted a few fries and a mozzarella stick to soak up some of the alcohol sloshing around in her stomach. At some point Spencer returned from the bar with an extra glass of water, sliding it her way with a knowing smile and a press of his lips to her cheek.
Eventually, Y/N had to excuse herself to the bathroom, patting Spencerâs arm and carefully navigating the dim bar. In the way that it so often did, the level of her intoxication made itself abundantly clear in the harsh lighting of the restroom. She stumbled out of the stall to wash her hands, using the countertop for balance and cursing under her breath.
She raised her head to analyze her appearance, groaning a little at the smudge of mascara under her eyes. As she swiped at the black rings, she considered that she had never quite figured out the ideal amount of alcoholâ somehow always managing to get a little too drunk. And now she was too drunk in front of all of Spencerâs friendsâ his family.
Not only that, but for the second time today, she couldnât help but feel so overwhelmingly ordinary . Surrounded by the team, all extraordinary and awe-inspiring in their own right, she was⊠plain, unaccomplished, boring . Spencer had called her remarkable; she felt anything but.
She closed her eyes against the tears that were threatening to spill over, remembering the last time sheâd cried in a bar bathroom. Sheâd spent that evening wondering what was wrong with her⊠wondering if she deserved to have someone like Spencer at all.
âThatâs just⊠the alcohol talking,â she reminded herself out loud into the empty bathroom. She stared at herself in the mirror. âStop beinâ a weirdo.â
She pushed out of the bathroom and back into the bar, walking a little more cautiously as the alcohol started to course through her bloodstream. As she approached the group again, Spencerâs eyes found her immediately, and he reached for her, pulling her underneath his arm and into his side. He brought his mouth close to her ear and murmured, âAre you okay?â
âYeah, justââ She slid her hand around his waist to keep herself steady. âJust more tipsy than I thought.â
He ran a soothing hand along her arm. âDo you wanna go home?â
She shook her head. âNo, noâ âM fine. âS nice to be with your friends.â
âYouâre sure?â He squeezed her shoulder and lowered his voice. âBecause honestly Iâm kind of ready to go.â
She looked up from where her head was resting on his chest to see him smiling softly at her. âWhatever you want.â
He pressed a kiss to her forehead, and then turned back to the team and cleared his throat. âWeâre gonna head out.â
Tara made a show of checking her watch. â10:45? Iâm surprised you stayed this long, old man.â
âŠ
Y/Nâs eyes opened slowly and came into focus as Spencerâs car came to a stop outside her apartment. âWhyâre we here?â
Spencer shut off the ignition and pulled out the key with a small smile. âI have a feeling youâre going to feel⊠less than stellar tomorrow. I thought you might like to wake up in your own bed. Hang on.â
He climbed out of the vehicle and closed the door before coming around to her side. She could feel the tears welling up as she fumbled with the buckle on her seatbelt. Everything was a little uncoordinated, and she felt absolutely ridiculous.
The door opened, and she carefully swung her legs out one at a time. Spencer stood slightly to the side, and she knew she should hurry up and let him get home, but she didnât move to get up.
âDo you need help?â
She shook her head, and the action sent a tear rolling over her bottom lash line. She tried to swipe it away, but of course Spencer caught it.
âHeyâ whatâs wrong?â he asked gently.
She sniffed. âAre you just dropping me off?â
He cupped a hand underneath her chin to tilt her eyes upward, and his eyes were soft but concerned. âI was planning to come upstairs with you. Unless you donât want me to.â
She shook her head. âNo, Iâ you can come upstairs.â
âOkay.â Spencer cocked his head. âHoney, whatâs going on?â
Y/N didnât know where to begin. She was drowning in self-doubtâ had been since about the one month mark. It seemed that every day there was something new to feel insecure about. The confidence sheâd had on his doorstep in March was nowhere to be found.
That was too much for her slow moving brain to articulate at the moment, so she settled on: âTheyâre all so smart and funny and cool and interesting.â
âOkayâŠâ he prompted.
âAnd Iâm not,â she admitted.
His mouth turned quickly down. âThatâs not true.â
âYes, it is,â she insisted. âIâm justâ a kindergarten teacher and Iâ I donât have any cool skills or stories, and I donât even have any muscles, and theyâre all so pretty ââ
âHey, stopâ stop.â Spencer squatted down to be eye-level with her. âFirst of all, youâre not âjustâ anything. And youâre my favorite kindergarten teacher and the best one I know.â He grabbed her hand and laced their fingers together. âYou have lots of cool skills and stories. And I donât have any muscles either.â
She lifted her free hand to squeeze his bicep. âYes, you do.â
âMuscles are overrated.â He smiled and brought a hand to her face, smoothing her hair back and then letting his fingers linger on her cheek. âAnd frankly, pretty is too mundane a term to describe you. Iâd go with something like radiant, or ethereal, or incandescent.â
âYou have to sâplain your jokes to me,â she slurred, swiping her forearm under her nose.
âNot always. And besides, I have to explain my jokes to basically everyone,â he reminded her. He squeezed her hand. âBut unlike everyone else, you let me explain them to you. And you actually listen to the explanation.â He shrugged. âI think I like that more than I like telling the joke.â
She was quiet then, eyes focused on a particularly interesting piece of loose gravel. She knew the list of her flaws was longer, but her brain couldnât string them together in her current state.
Spencer shuffled closer and waited patiently until she finally looked at him before continuing.
âI love you. And not because of your job, or your cool stories, or your muscles,â he clarified. âI love you because youâre you. And, a little selfishly, because I love the person that I am when Iâm with you. Okay?â
He smiled tentatively, and she let out a long breath. âOkay.â
He leaned forward and kissed her nose. âNow, come on. Letâs get inside.â
Spencer helped her navigate up the walkway and the three flights of stairs. Rather than rummage drunkenly through her purse, she passed it off and allowed him to retrieve her keys and unlock the door.
He supervised and provided balance support as she haphazardly swiped a makeup wipe over her face and fumbled into her pajamas. Finally he got her settled into bed with a bottle of water on the bedside table.
He pulled up the covers around her. âIâm going to go to the bathroom,â he murmured.
This was the moment that heâd realize what an absolute fool she was. Heâd finally be alone in the bathroom, and it would become abundantly clear that she couldnât drink responsibly, that she was boring, that she was obnoxious. She was sure of it, and her heart was fracturing into a thousand tiny pieces.
Spencerâs nervous laugh broke through her haze of insecurity. âWhoa, I thought we were done crying?â he joked. âHoney, câmere.â Spencer pulled her up into his arms, rubbing a hand over her back.
She hadnât realized she was making any noise until the sound vibrated against where Spencer had tucked her into his shoulder. As if she hadnât been foolish enough tonight, now she was blubbering into his nice cardigan. Despite herself, she clung to him like heâd disappear like smoke between her fingers.
âIâmâ Iâm sorry. I shouldnât have laughed; itâs not funny,â he apologized. âShhh, sweetheart . Itâ itâs okay, itâs okay .â
âI donât want you to go.â Her voice was full of tears and cracked pathetically at the end.
âOkay, okay,â he agreed, a tinge of confusion in his voice. âIâmâ the bathroom can wait, I suppose.â
That only made her cry harder, which poor Spencer responded to with even more aggressive soothing. He stroked over her hair and hugged her tight, shushing her and rocking her a little bit back and forth.
He was just so sweet . Kind and thoughtful and considerateâ three things she hadnât experienced from a significant other in a very long time. And it was exhausting waiting for the shiftâ for the moment that he realized she wasnât worth the hassle. She was so tired of anticipating the end.
âI donât want you to leave.â She hated how ridiculous she sounded, gasping and hiccuping.
Spencer froze for a full second and then squeezed her impossibly tighter. âIâm not. Baby, Iâm not. I am right here.â He stroked a firm hand up and down her spine. âI need you to take some deep breaths with me. Iâm gonna do it, too, okay?â
He led her in a series of deep inhalations and long exhales to the rhythm of his palm on her back. He murmured quietly to her, reassurances and promises and love. As her breathing came closer to normal, he pressed a soft kiss into her hair.
âI love you, Y/N. You know that, right? I wouldnât change one single thing about you.â His hand on her back slowed to a stop, and she could practically hear him considering his next move. âIâm pretty sure Billy Joel wrote a song about it, actually. I love you just the way you are. â
She couldnât stop the laugh from bubbling up in her throat at the tone deaf melody, and she felt him smile against her hair. âOkay?â
She wasnât okay, but that wasnât his fault. She sighed and sniffed. âOkay, off brand Billy Joel.â
âThatâs not very nice,â he chuckled, pulling back to swipe his fingers over her damp cheeks.
âYes, it is,â she insisted. âI love off brand. Just as good as the real thing, and with some fun quirks.â
âSomehow I donât think heâd appreciate the comparison.â He smiled softly at her, and then his expression melted into something a little more serious. âBut I mean it. There is no place Iâd rather be, and no one else that I wanna be with. When I say that I love you the most, I mean that I love you more than I have ever loved anybody. Ever.â
He looked at her so earnestly that she wanted to cry all over again. How was he so wonderful, and gentle, and loving, and perfect ? Heâd promised to do better on a chilly night in January and then spent every single day since then doing exactly that.
âBut I actually do have to pee,â he admitted sheepishly. âAre you going to be okay here for a few minutes?â
He was speaking to her as he would a child, and she was utterly mortified. She waved her hand. â God , Iâm beinâ so annoying.â
âNo, youâre not. Youâre a little drunk. And a lot adorable.â He tapped gently on her nose. âBut youâre also kind of sad, and I donât want you to be sad.â He propped the pillow up behind her. âItâll be the fastest pee everâ four minutes, tops. Most of it will be hand washing. Okay?"
âOkay,â she smiled, and she really meant it.
He hopped up and trotted to the bedroom door. âSee you in four minutes. Have some water while you wait.â
She followed instructions, sipping carefully from the bottle heâd left for her. She also rummaged through the bedside drawer for the Advil, popping two and washing them down with another swig of water.
Spencer returned to the bedroom with his cardigan and pants already discarded. He quickly slipped out of his button up and into his pajamas before sliding in beside her and holding out his arms. âAll right, câmere.â
âHmm?â she hummed.
âIâm demanding snuggles,â he clarified. âThatâs the price you pay for my chauffeur and caretaker services.â
Another smile slowly turned up the corners of her mouth, and he returned it, pulling her against his side. âThere she is.â
She allowed herself to settle and melt into his warmth, the soft fabric of his t-shirt under her cheek and his fingers brushing lightly over her arm. She willed herself to stop waiting for the shift. She begged herself to stop looking for the end.
Maybe this time there wouldnât be an end. Maybe she could have an infinite middle with Spencer Reid. Maybe she had earned that.

One week.
Thatâs how long it had been since their argument. Spencer had driven back to his apartment in silence, absolutely stunned by the way things had blown up.
Theyâd gotten back from the case in Utah on the fifth of January, and heâd driven straight to Y/Nâs, ready to give her a belated New Yearâs kiss. Immediately upon entering her apartment, he knew something was wrong. Her hug was stiff, her kiss brief, her eye contact minimal. Heâd spent the night, but they barely touched, and she left early for work without waking him. Heâd let himself out and texted her later in the day to invite her over for dinner.
Dinner hadnât been any less awkward, and when he felt awkward, he knew it was bad. He finally couldnât ignore it any longer, and heâd called it out. He had expected some resistance, but he hadnât expected that. Y/N never spoke to him with any malice at all, even when he was actually doing something that irritated her. She was the queen of healthy communication. So for her to speak to him like that meant that the underlying issue was much, much worse than heâd originally thought.
Heâd gone over their conversations a thousand times, looking desperately for the moment that it went wrong. After some deep consideration, he was certain that something had happened on New Yearâs Eve. He just wasnât sure what. Y/N was insistent that she wasnât bothered by the declined call, but he still wished he could go back in time and answer it. He was pretty sure the seeds of their argument had sprouted in that moment, regardless of what she said.
Spencer knew she was a creature of habit, and that sometimes she needed space to process and experience her emotions. And if he was being honest, he needed some space after the argument, too. But usually she would have at least texted him by now.
He sighed and set down his newspaper, realizing heâd read the same page four times and hadnât retained any of it. It was Friday, and he knew she was working. But still his fingers itched to dial her number. He picked up the phone, pressing a key to light up the screen yet again.
No new messages.
He dropped the phone back to the table with a little more force than was necessary. He decided heâd give her the rest of the weekend. If he didnât hear from her by Sunday, heâd have to do something.
âŠ
Y/N dropped her bag on the floor inside the door and turned to lock the deadbolt. She had managed to sneak out of the building without being stopped by Anita, and she thanked the universe for small miracles.
She didnât want to have to explain herself. She didnât want anyone to know what an absolute troll sheâd been. Considering that Sam and Spencer had practically become attached at the hip since theyâd started hanging out more, Anita was bound to ask about him.
She showered and ordered Thai food, snuggling down on the couch to watch a movie with Roald. She settled on Dumplinââ a favorite for the body positivity, the southern drawls, and the Dolly Parton drag.
And then she came to the argument outside of Harpyâs and lost what little emotional stability she had left.
âNever took you for the type that cares much what people think.â
âI canât, Bo. And that might make me a coward, butââ
âIt does. Willowdean Dixon, I think youâre beautiful. To hell with anyone whoâs ever made you feel less than that.â
She didnât realize she was crying until Roald meowed in distress. She choked out a sob and stroked over his ears, closing her eyes in defeat. âI really fucked this up, huh?â
It had only been one week, but it felt like years since Spencer walked out of her apartment. Sheâd stayed in bed for the entire weekend, crying on and off. She knew she had no one to blame but herself. Owen had knocked over the first domino, but sheâd done nothing to stop the rest from falling.
Spencer had done everything right. Heâd done everything she asked, and sheâd thrown it all back in his face. He had made the comparison to Mitchell Park, and he was absolutely right. Sheâd done the exact same thing, only she had almost a yearâs worth of ammunition, and she cut a hell of a lot deeper.
Roald nuzzled against her, but she nudged him awayâ she didnât even deserve the comfort. Instead, she fumbled in the couch cushions for her phone, swiping open the screen and tapping her favorites list, thumb hovering over Spencerâs name. Then she tapped on the name right above it and blew out a breath.
The line connected and rang three times before she picked up. âHey, sugar! Your ears must be ringinâ, âcause I was just thinkinâ about callinâ you.â
âHey, mama,â Y/N breathed.
Her motherâs tone changed from chipper to concerned in an instant. âWhatâs wrong, baby?â
She leaned forward to the coffee table to grab Spencerâs scarfâ somehow left behind in her apartmentâ rubbing it between her fingers. âIâ I really messed up.â
âOh, Lord. You need bail money?â
Despite herself, Y/N laughed wetly. âOh my god , mama. No, I donât need bail money.â
âWell, if you made bail it canât be that bad,â Rose insisted.
âI didnâtâ Iâm not in jail, for Christâs sake.â Y/N ran a hand over her face. âI messed things up with Spencer.â
âWell, we can fix that,â Rose responded matter of factly. âWhat happened?â
âWe were fighting, and I said some really, really awful things,â Y/N admitted, tears spilling over her lash line.
Rose scoffed. âHoney, I say awful things to your father all the time, and weâve been married almost 40 years.â
Y/N heaved a long sigh. âNot like this, mama.â
Her mother hummed in consideration. âWell, what were yâall fightinâ about?â
âItâs complicated,â Y/N hedged, toying with the fringe of the scarf.
Rose clicked her tongue. âDo ya want my help or not?â
Y/N dropped her head back against the couch. âI ran into Owen on New Yearâs Eveââ
âWell, I hope you told him to stick it where the sun donât shine,â Rose practically growled.
Y/N closed her eyes as the tears tracked hot down her cheeks. âI didnât. Iâ I let him get under my skin, and then I didnât want to tell Spencer about it because itâs embarrassing, but he knew something was wrong, and he wouldnât stop asking about it.â She had to pause and suck in a hiccuping breath, releasing it on a sob. âSo I yelled at him and said all kinds of terrible things, and then he left, and now I think maybe we broke up, and Iâve literally never been so sad in my whole life.â
There was a long pause on the other end of the phone, and then she heard Rose sniffling. âReally shoulda had your brothers knock the mess out of that son of bitch when we had the chance. He's been gone five years, and heâs still hurtinâ you every chance he gets.â
Y/N swiped uselessly at the tear tracks on her cheeks, sniffling pathetically. âAnd now I hurt the person whoâs spent the last year singlehandedly undoing all of his awful handiwork.â
âOh, sweetheart,â Rose cooed. Y/N could hear the creak of the floorboards as her mother walked through her childhood home. âYou said he knew somethinâ was wrong, right? I can almost guarantee that heâs still just wonderinâ whatâs goinâ on. I know heâs supposed to be a genius, but heâs still a man. And men are dumb, sugar. You gotta spell it out for âem. Have you talked to him since?â
âNo.â Fresh tears spilled over Y/Nâs lashes as the thoughts that had kept her from calling him spilled out of her mouth. âWhat if it was too far? What if I ruined everything? What if he never wants to speak to me again?â
Ross heaved out a long breath. âThatâs a lot of what ifs, Y/N.â
âWhat if Iâm right?â she whispered.
âAnd what if youâre not?â Rose countered. âThat boy loves you. Anyone could see that, clear as day. Heâd do just about anything for you.â Rose paused, and Y/N heard the springs of the bed squeak as she sat. âBut you gotta let him, sweetheart. Right now youâre takinâ away his chance to do that. Youâre makinâ the decision for him.â
Y/N listened as her motherâs advice crackled over the line, and for the first time in a week, she felt a tiny sliver of hope.
âIf he doesnât want to be with you anymore, you need to let him tell you that. Donât settle for a what if. Find out for sure, or you're gonna spend the rest of your life worryinâ and wonderinâ, sugar.â
âŠ
That evening found Spencer in his usual spot on the couch, reclined against the arm with a book in hand. Heâd promised himself heâd give Y/N the weekend to herselfâ that heâd let her come to him. That didnât stop him from checking his phone obsessively; it never buzzed with any new calls or messages, but he still looked every seven minutes.
The sound of the buzzer jolted his body to attention. He checked his watch and drew his brows together before closing his book and scrambling to cross to the intercom, a tiny seed of hope beginning to germinate. He pressed the button to talk, calling, âYes?â into the speaker box and then listening for the response.
âHi.â
Her voice was so quiet that he could barely hear it over the crackle of the speaker. He buzzed her in without hesitation, crossing to the door and opening it immediately. She made her way slowly up the stairs, turning at the top of the landing and pausing.
His heart broke at the sight of her. She looked utterly exhausted, dressed in black sweatpants and a soft purple sweater, a black puffer jacket over top. She was holding his scarf, wringing it in between her hands. Her eyes were ringed red, and the bags under them were worse than his.
He watched as she crossed the landing, coming to stand quietly in front of him. Heâd known something was wrong, but the way she looked now made him wonder just how long sheâd been battling whatever private demons she wouldnât let him in on.
âI, um.â She cleared her throat, and it was clear sheâd been crying from the thickness of her voice. âI have a lot to sayâ again. But since I was such an asshole, I wanted to give you the opportunity to say anything you need to say first.â
Heâd imagined this conversation countless times over the last week, and never once had he thought it would start like this. âUm. Well. Youâ you really hurt me.â
She could barely look at him. âI know.â
He swallowed. âPlease donât do that again.â
She shook her head, finally meeting his eyes. âI wonât. I wonât ever again.â
Spencer tucked his hands into the pockets of his lounge pants. âI know I may not be the best at social cues, but Iâm a pretty good profiler. And I can tell when somethingâs wrong.â He raised his eyebrows. âYou donât have to tell me everything. Iâm just asking you to tell me when I do something that makes you upset.â
âYouâ you didnât do anything wrong. Iââ He watched her squeeze her eyes shut. âGod, Iâm so sorry, Spencer. Iâm justâ Iâm sorry for so many things. For lying about being fine, for being up on my high horse about communicating and then not actually doing it, for being an absolute bitch.â
He wanted to argueâ she wasnât a bitchâ but he could tell she was far from done.
âIâ I thought therapy was supposed to teach me how to talk about things, but this still feels⊠impossible to say out loud,â she admitted, fingers fumbling with the fabric of the scarf. âItâs embarrassing and ridiculous. But Iâ I have deep-seated insecurities. That Iâm not really that smart or interesting or particularly special.â
He thought back to that night in Mitchell Park and felt the guilt all over again. Heâd practically said those exact words to herâ it was no wonder she was feeling this way.
âAnd every person that Iâve ever been with hasâ really reinforced those ideas, so for a long time they were just⊠a set part of my self-image,â she explained, dragging a hand over her messy hair. âI thoughtâ I thought that I was over it, but Iâ I donât know. Maybe you never really are.â
His brain sorted through every moment of their year together, pinging off the countless examples of her self-doubt and insecurity. She was easily the most wonderful person he knew, but he could clearly see the cracks in the facade if he looked close enough. How had he missed it for so long?
âAnd then I met you, and youâŠâ Y/N let out a wry laugh. âYouâre easily the most interesting person Iâve ever met, but you made me feel like⊠I donât know, like Iâm interesting, too. Like Iâm worthy of being with you, like Iâmâ like Iâm good enough.â
He felt his heart splintering into a thousand tiny shardsâ good enough?
âBut I canâtâ I still have a hard time believing it sometimes. And Iâ Iâve been letting myself keep you at arms length. Letting you see parts of me, but⊠never giving you everything,â she admitted.
He watched her struggle to get the words out, her voice thick with the act of holding back sobs. He hadnât realized she was carrying all of this. She was so good at supporting him and loving him through all of his trauma and issues, he hadnât stopped to consider just how much she needed him, too.
She continued, âItâs why I took so long to say I love you⊠why I couldnât talk to you last week. Because I justââ She shrugged as the tears rolled down her cheeks. âI keep waiting for the other shoe to drop. For you to realize that Iâm really nothing special. That youâre getting bored, or thereâs someone whoâs a better fit for you, or one million other things. That Iâm needy, and annoying, and too much work.â
A fresh tear tracked down her cheek, and he felt his own eyes filling. She never failed to put a stop to his own insecuritiesâ reminding him that she liked his rambling, that he wasnât irritating, that he was just the right amount. In his eyes, she was perfect. He would have never guessed she felt this way about herself.
She continued, âThatâs what happened before, and none of those guys were even half as wonderful as you are.â She swiped a hand haphazardly over her cheeks, looking at him sheepishly. âAnd then I was hurtful and awful, and I realized that I was just creating a self fulfilling prophecy and I donâtâ I donât want to do that.â
Her hand shook a little as she brought it back down to twist in his scarf. âBecause itâs neverâ Iâve never felt like this. I've never been this happy with anyone else, and I donât want to give that up. I donât want to give you up. Even if sometimes I feel like Iâll never be enough.â
Her voice cracked on a stifled cry, and his chest physically ached. âAnd if you never want to see me again, I completely understand, and Iâll leave you alone, but Iâ Iâm just so sorry. And I love you so much, and Iâm trying so hard to be better.â She sucked in a ragged breath and let it out on an exhausted sigh. âAnd thatâs, umâ thatâs it. If you want me to go, Iââ
âI donât want you to go,â he interrupted.
Her eyes went wide. âYou donât?â
âOf course not.â Spencer stepped forward and reached for her. âOf course not. Câmere.â
As soon as the words left his mouth, she was tumbling into his arms with a choked off sob. He pulled her inside and closed the door behind them, walking her to the couch and sitting them both down. She clung to him like she was afraid heâd disappear into thin air.
âY/N, Iâm right here,â he assured her. âIâm right here, baby. Iâm not going anywhere.â
âBut if you n-need space, I understand,â she sobbed.
âI appreciate the offer, but I donât need space. I think a week was long enough, donât you?â he asked, pressing a kiss into her hair.
She pulled back out of the hug, head down. âBut I really hurt you.â
He held her hand. âYeah. And I really hurt you, too.â
She huffed out a breath. âThatâs not how this works. I donât get to hurt you just because you hurt me.â
âI know that.â He almost laughed at how indignant she sounded. âIâm not saying that we should hurt each other. Iâm saying that sometimes it happens. And when it does, we apologize, and we forgive, and we move forward. And itâs okay if you need space. But I donât.â
âWhat if you change your mind?â she whispered.
âThen I promise Iâll tell you.â Spencer tilted her chin up so he could meet her eyes. âI promise Iâll tell you what I need, as long as you tell me, too. Weâve gotta use all those communication skills we learn in therapy.â
Y/N nodded, and he pulled her into another hug. He closed his eyes, letting out a sigh of relief. âIf I hadnât heard from you by Sunday, I was planning to bother you until you talked to me.â
He could feel the beginning of a smile turning up the corner of her mouth where it was pressed to his shoulder. âYou never bother me,â she mumbled. She held him for a moment longer and then released him from the hug and sat back, fidgeting with her hands and letting out a breath.
âSometimes I need to be told that my worst fears about myself arenât true,â she admitted. âI know thatâs so annoying, butââ
âItâs not annoying,â he interrupted, putting an immediate stop to that line of thought. âTelling you how amazing you are isnât the chore that you think it is. Iâm sorry that anyone ever convinced you that it was.â
He covered her hands with his own, rubbing his thumbs softly along her skin. He couldnât stop thinking about her dealing with all of this by herself. He hated that sheâd ever felt anything less than adored. More than anything, he hated that he hadnât been able to help her through it. And he wanted to make sure that he never made that mistake again.
âA wise man told me once... that love is helping someone navigate their storms,â he murmured, squeezing her hand. She looked at him then, and he continued, âYouâve been my lighthouse for a long time, Y/N. And Iâ Iâm trying desperately to be yours⊠But you have to let me.â
Her eyes filled with fresh tears, but she nodded. He let out a long breath and pulled her hands into his lap. âI understand that sometimes you need space, and thatâs fine. Iâm happy to give you whatever you need.â
He shook his head. âJustâ please donât try to weather the storm by yourself. You canât do it all alone; no one can.â He smiled ruefully. âI can tell you from experience thatâs pretty much a guaranteed way to capsize your boat.â
His voice cracked a little at the end, and he felt a tear slip over his lash line. âIâll help you repair your boat, or build a new one, or you can just float on mine for a while. Itâs not perfect but itâs pretty sturdy, I think.â
She brought her fingers up to brush at his damp cheeks, and he met her eyes. âWhat Iâm not going to do is let you float out on the ocean by yourself. I love you too much.â
She was quiet for a long moment, sniffling a little and just watching himâ almost like she couldnât believe he was there. She brought her hand back to his and laced their fingers together, rubbing her thumb along his skin. âI love you the most.â
âAgree to disagree.â He gave her a small smile and leaned forward to press his lips to her forehead. âWant some tea?â
She was frowning when he pulled back, her brows drawn together. âI need to tell you about Owen.â
The conversation heâd had with Anita was suddenly on replay in Spencerâs head.
⊠a real piece of shit⊠telling her lies about herself⊠isolating her⊠destroying her from the inside out...
He squeezed her hand. âYou donât have to tell me if youâre not ready. You donât have to tell me at all if you donât want to.â
She shook her head. âTalking about him takes away his power. I have to stop letting him have so much sway over my emotions.â She looked at him then. âI do things I regret and hurt people I love.â
He brought their joined hands up his lips. âWell, Iâm here either way. And Iâm still going to make you some tea.â
He stood and pulled her up with him, bringing her into the kitchen and refusing to let go of her hand. He filled the kettle and turned it on, found a bag of her favorite tea and ripped it open with his teeth. He dropped the bag into her favorite mug, and then made a mug up for himself.
âYou know, itâd be a lot easier if youâd let go,â she said, the hint of a smile in her voice.
âMhm,â he agreed, but he made no move to release her hand. In fact, once heâd fumbled a spoonful of honey into each of the cups, he dropped the spoon into her mug and turned to pull her into another hug. He hooked his chin over her shoulder and closed his eyes as she brought her arms around his waist. âI missed you,â he whispered.
She squeezed him tight. âI missed you, too. Iâm so sorry.â
She buried her face in his neck, and he felt her breathe him in. He pressed a kiss into her shoulder and then settled his chin again. âApology accepted, in case it wasnât clear.â
They stood like that until the kettle began to whistle, and then Spencer kept her tucked underneath his arm as he turned to shut it off and pour the water into the mugs. They each grabbed a mug, making their way back to the couch and setting them on the coffee table to steep. Spencer kept their fingers intertwined and stayed quiet, letting her set the pace of the conversation.
Y/N took a deep breath and let it out on a long sigh. âI guess I should start at the beginning. I, umâ I had my first boyfriend in high-school: Cal Cunningham. He was older and cooler, and so I feltâ I donât know⊠special when he picked me.â She rolled her eyes. âIn reality, he was rude, and arrogant, and kind of a misogynist. We didnât date for very long, but it kind of⊠set me up on this path of dating guys who werenât very nice.â
Spencer ran his thumb soothingly along hers, waiting for her to continue. âWhen I started college, I dated this guy Adam for a few months. He was nice enough but really self-centered and a little immature. When we broke up I just wanted to be on my own for a while.â
âI was single for two years after that, just kind of⊠finding myself and whatever.â Her eyes tracked the path his thumb traced along her skin. âSo when I started dating Owen at the end of junior year, it felt like my first real relationship. Likeâ we were both adults, and he dressed up for our dates, and he paid for things and bought me flowers and fit all the cliches.â
âAnd it was great at first,â she admitted. âWe had a lot of the same friends, so weâd been hanging out for a while before we got together. He was a perfect gentlemanâ and smart, accomplished, and ambitious. I fell fast, and I fell hard, and we were sort ofâ it feels so stupid to say this, but it felt like we were an it couple.â
âA few of us made plans to move to DC after graduationâ my friend Jess and her boyfriend Chris, Sam and Anita,â she explained. âAnd Owen and I, obviously. We moved in together in an apartment downtown. And thatâs when everything changed.â
She drew her brows together. âIt was little things at first. Like heâd jokingly call me stupid for forgetting something, or heâd complain about one of my friends being annoying. But it snowballed pretty quickly. Heâd tell me I was stupid, and he wasnât joking. All of my friends irritated him to the point where we couldnât hang out anymoreâ even our former mutual friends. He thought that teaching kindergarten was a mindless, pointless job.â
Spencer tried to keep his heart rate steady, his facial expressions neutral, but his blood pressure was on the rise. No one deserved to be spoken to like that, least of all Y/N.
She continued, âWe spent the holidays at my parentsâ the second year we were dating, and he spent the entire car ride home explaining, in detail, how ridiculous and low-class he thought everything was.â
She shook her head and rubbed her free hand over her face. âI know itâs insane that I stayed with him for five years, but Iâ he did a really good job of convincing me that I was... that I was nothing. That he was doing me a favor by loving me. That he could have anyone, but he chose me. No one else was going to, so I should be grateful.â
He balled his free hand into a fist to avoid squeezing her to death. When Anita had said Owen was a piece of shit⊠he hadnât realized just how deeply she meant it.
She picked at the fabric of her sweatpants, staring intently at the tiny pills. âWhen someone says all of that to you on a daily basis, and youâre not hearing otherwise from anyone elseâ because no one knew what was going onâ when someone tells you youâre nothing⊠you start to believe it.â
Spencer relaxed his fist to bring his fingers up to her face, gently cupping her cheek. She leaned into his touch and closed her eyes for a long moment. He didnât know what to say. Instead, he pressed his lips to her forehead in a voiceless assurance that she was, in fact, everything. He felt her relax under the warm pressure of his lips, and he hoped that was enough for now.
He sat back to let her continue. âWe were together for five years, and we only broke up because he cheated on me. It was a long term affair; they were sleeping together for almost a year before I found out. And⊠a lot of people knew. Almost all of his friends knew. But I didnât. I was still being this ridiculous, desperate little Suzy Homemaker trying to make him happy, even though he was still treating me like shit.â
She laughed, but there wasnât an ounce of humor in it. âWhen I found out, I wasnât even hurt. I was⊠embarrassed, I guess. But I was so relieved. I was so fucking relieved that I had a way out.â
He watched as her shoulders settled, almost like an actual weight had been lifted off of them. âI got a therapist and dropped all of the friends that were still hanging around with him. I moved to a new neighborhood, started hanging out with Anita and Sam, and justâ started fresh. And I was doing really well. Iâve had my moments of insecurity here and there, but for the most part, Iâve been able to recognize the moments when Iâm falling back into old thought patterns.â
She looked at him then, and her eyes were so soft and lovely that his heart ached. âYouâre a big reason for that. Youâre so open with how you feel about me, and⊠it makes things a lot easier.â She dropped her gaze with a sigh. âBut Iâ he was at the party on New Year's. And I didnât know he was going to be there until I was already there , and then it felt stupid to leave. I thought I could handle itââ
âAnd then I didnât answer your call.â
âNo, no .â She shook her head and reached her free hand out to grasp his arm. âThatâsâ Spencer, none of this is your fault.â She furrowed her brow, and the crease between them was practically an abyss. âHe sort ofâ cornered me on the patio. I hadnât seen him in like, four years? And he was complimenting me, and asking about you, and then he tried toâ well, he did kiss me actually. I shoved him off, and he didnât like that, and he did his whole Owen thing. Told me that heâd cheated because I was uninteresting and worthless. That eventually youâd get bored of me, too. Just, umâ generally awful shit.â
She took a deep breath, and the rest steamrolled off her tongue and over his heart. âAnd then he justâ left . And heâd absolutely demolished my self-image in less than ten minutes, and I was embarrassed and angry at myself, and then you didnât answer, but I was kind of glad you didnât because I didnât actually want to talk about it. And I thought I could just move on, but then I was being weird, and you knew something was wrong. And I just wanted to pretend like it never happened, but then you kept pressing me on it, and I justâ I didnât want to have to explain it all to you because I was afraid thatâ that maybe he was right.â
Y/N dissolved back into the couch, an unwelcome indication of the emotional exhaustion that came with reliving trauma. Spencer moved closer and mirrored the position of her body against the cushions, bringing his face close enough to bump their noses together. They breathed the same air for one noiseless minute before she finally met his eyes.
âI need you to understand that not one single thing he said to youâ on New Yearâs or everâ was right, in either sense of the word. None of it was factual, and none of it was acceptable.â
She gave him a weary nod, and he continued, âYou are the single best person that I know. Youâre kind, brilliant, and driven. Youâre interesting, and wonderful, and lovely. Youâre my absolute favorite person on the planet, and I will never get bored of you.â
He let his eyes trace over all the angles and curves of her face, and then raised his eyebrows. âHeâs lucky that I respect you enough not to go over your head, because what Iâd like to do is run a full background check and find any and every possible transgression that could be legally investigated and then use that information to ruin his life.â He tilted his head in thought. âThat orâ get really jacked and then beat the shit out of him.â
âGod, please donât. As much as Iâd love to watch that unfold,â she cupped his face in her hand, âyouâre better than that. And heâs not worth either of our energies⊠I already wasted enough time dwelling on it and hurt you in the process.â She dropped her hand back to her lap with a sigh. âI spent so much time in that relationship that my brain didnât know what to do with this good, healthy one.â
He took both of her hands in his, squeezing them tight and then pressing a kiss to the back of each. He wouldnât commit assault, since sheâd asked him not to. But he wasnât going to let Owen taint any part of his life with her.
âIâm so sorry that someone you loved made you think it was hard to love you. Because loving you is the easiest thing Iâve ever done.â He pressed his lips together and mused, âBut I think maybe love has a learning curve. Especially when youâre used to being hurt. You have to unlearn all the bullshit. People will have you thinking that you have to water yourself down, or change who you are, or make yourself more palatable. I thought that, too.â
He brushed her hair back away from her face and waited for her to meet his eyes. âAnd then I met you. And you love all of itâ all of me. All the rambling, all the quirks, andâ even the dark parts, too.â
She sniffled a little, but really smiled for the first time that night. âWhatâs not to love about you?â
He smiled back. âIâm not sure if you realize that I fully reciprocate that feeling. Whatâs not to love about you? I have a hard time thinking of even one thing about you that I donât absolutely adore.â
âEven when I act like a horrid bitch?â she mumbled, only half joking.
He leaned his head against the couch cushion. âA year ago, you stood on my doorstep and gave me forgivenessâ after Iâd been a complete asshole to you... I told you then that I wanted to learn how to love with you. I still do. In all the wonderful, and the weird, and the terrible. Even when we get it wrong.â
He shrugged, and then ran a soft fingertip down the bridge of her nose. âThere is no one else Iâd rather get it wrong with. Because when we get it right⊠itâs the closest Iâve ever felt to magic.â
Her eyes sparkled with unshed tears, and she brought both hands up to his face, holding him with an adoration that made his own eyes burn. âYou can believe that you love me the most,â she whispered, âbut just know that youâre wrong.â
He leaned forward to close the distance between them, pressing a kiss to her lips with a reverence that felt technicolor and devout and more magical than any trick heâd ever mastered.
âAgree to disagree.â

âââ
Sheâd missed her period in July, but sheâd chalked it up to the stress surrounding Jessâ weddingâ the planning, the supporting, the Owen of it all.
But then the wedding weekend had come and gone, and she started noticing the rest of itâ the symptoms. It was crude, but her boobs were soreâ so sore that her bras were even more uncomfortable than usual. Her mood swings were horrificâ so horrific that one afternoon Spencer bought an entire ice cream cake to try to improve her mood. Both of these things could have been attributed to her period, she supposedâ and thatâs what she let Spencer believe. Except it never came.
And then one morning after he left for work, she vomited for no apparent reason, and the panic started to rise. She was able to convince herself that maybe it was a tiny bout of food poisoning⊠and then it happened again. And again. On the third day ofâ well, morning sicknessâ she bought the first test and tried not to read too much into the cashierâs practiced neutral expression.
She peed on the stick and set the timer on her phone and then paced around the bathroom of their shared home. She waited for the longest two minutes of her life and tried to avoid Roaldâs knowing stare. She went over the last year and a half in her mind, tears gathering behind her eyes for the first time as she remembered every perfect and imperfect moment with Spencer. And then when the time was up, she closed her eyes and flipped over the test, taking a deep breath before bringing her gaze back to the tiny result screen.
Two pink lines.
Positive.
She threw away the test and emptied the bathroom trash can and googled how accurate are drug store pregnancy tests?
âŠ
Over the rest of the week, she took six more home tests. And every time, a set of two pink lines stared back at her. Roald became absolutely glued to her. He was even more affectionate than usual, and so obvious about her belly that she was shocked that Spencer didnât catch on immediately.
On Sunday, she went on a fridge rampage. Anything that was expired or not recommended for pregnant mothers went directly in the trash, much to Spencerâs chagrinâ and confusion. And then he forgot to take said trash out (with the recently scooped cat litter on top), and sheâd been on the verge of tearsâ after reading one article about toxoplasmosis, she had immediately become paranoid about breathing in the tiny bacterial spores. And of course she had to empty the bathroom trash can every single day, wrapping the positive tests in far too much toilet paper before dumping them into the general garbage.
Still, Spencer didnât say anything. He made a grocery list to replace the things sheâd thrown away with a perplexed smile. He took out the trash, wide-eyed and apologetic. He was smiling and gentle and perfect, as he always was, and it made her feel worse.
She had to say no to sushi and the brewery date with Sam and Anita. She was overly emotional about Luke and Penelopeâs engagement announcement. Roald would not stop snuggling the non-existent bump. By the end of the second week, she was absolutely stunned that Spencer hadnât seemed to figure it out.
She was particularly stunned that he hadnât noticed the physical distance she kept between them. She slept at the edge of the bed rather than curled into his side. She deftly dodged his every attempt to snuggle up behind her in the kitchen. She avoided hugging him, even though all she really wanted was his arms around her and his reassuring voice in her ear.
She was sure heâd be able to feel itâ the bump, the pregnancy hormones, her anxiety⊠and she wasnât ready to tell him just yet. She wasnât ready to ruin this just yet.
So instead, she held his hand.
At the dinner table, on the couch, in bed. She held his hand. She closed her eyes and focused on the warmth of his palm, memorized how his fingers felt between her own, and tried to convince herself that it would be okay. They had never talked about it, but theyâd each sort of⊠implied some positive opinions about it. Surely heâd want to have this baby with her.
Surely he would.
âŠ
On that Wednesday, she finally got the confirmation from her doctor. She was Definitely Pregnant. Approximately eight weeks. She cried in her car outside the doctorâs office for thirty minutes before promptly driving to the closest McDonaldâs and ordering a large fry and a large Coke. And then she cried for another thirty minutes, sobbing over the steering wheel and apologizing to the baby for all the salt and sugar sheâd just funneled down to them.
The baby.
She fumbled her phone out of her purse and pulled up her favorites list, staring at the names in front of her. Who could she even call? Her mom was definitely outâ a child out of wedlock with a man she wasnât even engaged to? Her mother was a lot of thingsâ and old-fashioned was certainly one of them.
Her sister was dealing with her own newborn, Anita was in Arizona visiting her family, and Penelope was engagedâ and couldnât keep a secret to save her life.
Spencer. She should call Spencer.
But this wasnât a conversation they should be having over the phone. She needed to see him, to be able to gauge his reaction in real time. She needed to hug him and cry into his shoulderâ rather than into a fast food wrapper.
And the truth was, she was scared. She was scared to be pregnant, of the way this would change their lives, of all the millions of things that could go wrong. More than anything, she was scared that she and Spencer would want different things. That sheâd want to have this baby with him, and he wouldnât. That heâd feel trapped, and that theyâd inevitably break up, and sheâd be on her own.
And so she still wasnât ready to tell him just yet. She wasnât ready to ruin this just yet.

âDo youâ would you want toâ come upstairs?â he asked.Â
Spencer stood in front of her, unsure of what to do with his hands. Maggie was absolutely radiantâ bathed in the very last of the golden daylight and more beautiful than he even remembered.
She stepped back with a smile, then waved and turned on her heel headed to her car.Â
He stood rooted to the spot until she had disappeared from view, then let out a long breath and looked down at the small screen of his phone at her contact information. His lips twitched at the name sheâd given herself.Â
Miss Honey <3
âŠ
Forty five minutes later, Spencer smoothed down the front of his cardigan and blew out a sigh. Heâd spent five of those minutes reveling in the magic that was Maggie, and the other forty convincing himself that sheâd already changed her mind. But he was a man in love, and so he was standing in front of her building, willing himself to press her buzzer.Â
He was jolted out of his stupor by the buzzing of his phone. He pulled the device from his pocket and saw her name on the tiny screen, hesitating only a moment before pressing the button to answer. âHi.â
âHi.â He could hear her smile through the tinny speaker, and it immediately set him at ease. âI was just checking to make sure you remembered where you were going.â
âYeah, Iâ Iâm outside now, actually,â he confirmed.Â
âOh, great! Iâll buzz you up.âÂ
He couldnât help but grin.
âHey.â She returned his smile. âCome on in.â She moved aside and waved him into her apartment.Â
He stepped over the threshold, and she closed the door behind him. âI can take your coat. Feel free to leave your shoes there. Roald will be in hiding for the next half hour or so,â she informed him.Â
He shrugged out of his coat and handed it to her, looking briefly around the tidy space. The walls of her living room were a calming mint green, adorned with plenty of art and photographs. Her couch was a blush pink velvet, exactly as soft as she was.Â
âOkay, Iâm starving,â she admitted, turning to hang his coat in the coat closet. âWe can order pizza, Indian, Thaiâ any preference?â
He shook his head. âNo, whatever you want.â
She closed the closet door and cocked an eyebrow. âSo if I wanted to order a huge pizza with extra cheese, youâd be cool with that?â
âSure, absolutely,â he nodded.Â
She let out a small sigh, and he braced himself for impact.Â
âWhy donât you come sit?â
After everything heâd put her through, Maggie deserved that much.Â
He breathed in through his nose, expelling it in a sigh. âIâve justâ Iâve spent the last month thinking about thisâ about youâ pretty much exclusively,â he admitted, staring at his hands. âAnd Iâm just realizing that I never really⊠allowed myself to think about what would happen next, because I wasnât sure that this would happen at all.â He gestured between them and then looked at her. âAnd now Iâm hereâ with you, and I justâ itâsâŠâ He let out a sigh.Â
âDoesnât live up to expectations?â she prompted.Â
How about Indian?â
âŠ
They were just cleaning up the last of the take out containers when Roald made his way out of Maggieâs bedroom.Â
âThere he is! Hey, buddy,â Maggie cooed, leaning down to give Roald a quick pet.
Maggieâs mouth dropped open a bit as he leaned down to scratch between Roaldâs ears.Â
âHeâ he is never that friendly,â she said incredulously. âThere really is something about you, Dr. Reid.â
He looked up at her with a smile. âIâm just glad he approves. Would have been kind of awkward otherwise.âÂ
âHeâs a very good judge of character, so that bodes well for you,â she confirmed.
âOh yeah?â Spencer scratched underneath Roaldâs chin, grinning at the contented cat. He brought his gaze back to her, standing back to his full height when he realized sheâd moved⊠a lot closer. His tongue darted out to wet his lips, and he watched her eyes track the motion.Â
âYeah.â
He thought back to that night nearly two months ago, the way his mouth had verged on violent when sheâd kissed him. He hated that their first kiss was tainted with his foolishness, that heâd marred that memory for them both. He couldnât take it back, and he wasnât certain that she wanted to kiss him now, but he couldnât stop himself from asking.Â
âCan I kiss you?â
âYes, please,â she breathed.
He brought his hands to her face and used a gentle grip to pull her in. She rested her warm palms against his waist and let her fingers dig in, holding herself steady as his lips met hers.Â
He kept the kiss as soft as she deserved, opening his mouth to let her in but letting her lead and take him wherever she wanted to go. Her hands slid around to his back, and she tugged him in closer. He left one hand cradling her face but moved the other to the small of her back and pulled her flush against him.Â
She huffed out a tiny breath against his mouth, her lips turning up in a smile that he could feel in his toes. She brought one hand up to his jaw, rubbed her thumb across his cheek and then wound her fingers into his hair. She tangled them in his curls and tugged just enough to break the kiss, pressing their foreheads together with a sigh.Â
âIf itâs all the same to you, I think Iâm just gonna wipe our first kiss from my memory and replace it with that one,â she murmured.Â
âIâm very much on board with this rewrite,â he agreed.Â
âExcellent.â She used the hand in his hair to pull him forward into another quick kiss. Roald made his presence known at their feet with a loud meow, pulling a laugh from both of them.Â
They de-tangled themselves from each other, and Maggie ran a hand through her hair. âItâs getting late.â He nodded in agreement, although he never wanted this night to end.
A solution kit, a hug, forgiveness, a kiss, and now this.Â
His racing mind came to a standstill. The near constant noise was quieted. The turbulent sea became calm, still waters.Â
âIâd really, really like that.â
âŠ
Spencer ended up in an XXL t-shirt from a school fundraiser and a pair of stretchy bike shorts. Maggie had managed to scrounge up a new toothbrush from the back of the cabinet, and they brushed their teeth together with foamy smiles in the bathroom mirror.Â
It had taken very little convincing for Spencer to agree to share the bed. Maggie climbed in under the covers, settling back against the pillows and turning down the duvet for him to join her. He held up one finger and disappeared out into the living room, returning a minute later with the solution kit in hand. He moved to the bed, sliding in between the soft sheets and pulling up the duvet.Â
This one is reading a favorite bookâ which I know will take you about five minutes,â she joked.Â
She looked up to find his eyes on her and smiled. âYeah. You can call me, too.â She pressed a soft kiss to his mouth, andâ not for the first time that nightâ he could not believe how lucky he was.Â
She drew back to pull out the next card: a clip art rendering of a desktop computer. âOh! This one is for researching something. I know youâve got a seemingly endless encyclopedia of knowledge up there,â she tapped on his temple, âbut thereâs always something new to learn. And teaching yourself something can help you feel capable in moments where youâre feelingâ a little helpless.âÂ
There was also a small wooden puzzle cube in the box. She took it from the box and held it up in front of them. âI know your IQ will probably solve this thing in fifteen seconds, but at least itâll be a nice fidget toy,â she laughed.
The last card in the box was a picture of a timer. âThis one might seem kind of dumb, but sometimes it helps me to set a timer to remind myself that feeling shitty is a temporary state of being.â She held the card between her fingers and shrugged. âEven if Iâm still feeling less than great after the timer goes off, it usually gives me the boost I need to move forward.âÂ
She gathered all the cards in her hands, shuffling them and then placing them back in the box. âYou can add your own options as you think of them. This was just a starter set.âÂ
He closed the lid of the box and set it on the bed between them. He reached for her hand, and she immediately threaded their fingers together. He rubbed his thumb along her impossibly soft skin and took a deep breath.Â
âThe timer isnât dumb. I, umâ I did something similar in prison.â She squeezed his hand. âI kept track of theâ the days on this little spot on the wall. Every time it felt like I couldnât take another day, Iâd count the marks and remind myself that Iâ that Iâd survived that long. That I could make it another day.â
He went quiet, and Maggie sat up a little in bed, brushed her free hand over his hair. âWe donât have to talk about it if you donât want to.â
âI want to.â It wasnât a lie. He wanted to talk to her about it. He wanted to talk to her about everything. He wanted to let her into the shadowy corners of his mind that he kept from everyone else.
âIf youâre sure, then Iâm right here.â She pulled their intertwined fingers into her lap and leaned over to press a kiss to his shoulder.Â
She, umâ she manipulated another woman into drugging me and framing me for the murder of the doctor I was getting the medication from.âÂ
Spencer didnât realize he was crying until Maggieâs hands were on his face, wiping the tears before pulling him into her arms. âA-and then I poisoned the drugs, which just ended up hurting a bunch of people who didnât deserve to get hurt.
When his hands fell back to his lap, she sniffled a little before taking a deep breath, releasing it on a shaky sigh.Â
âThe choices you made kept you alive, Spencer. They wereâ impossible, horrific choices that Iâm sure justââ She shook her head, searching for the right words. âIâm sure the weight of the guilt and grief has to be unbearable sometimes,â she surmised. âAnd thereâs nothing I can say that will make that any less true.âÂ
