     when he had heard that he needed to audition for a role in a musical, and he could choose any song he wanted, especially if it was from a musical, the first song that came to mind was scream, performed by zac efron in high school musical 3. he’s not sure why, but it’s very specifically that song that he thinks of first, and he has half a mind to really just go through with it and audition with that.

     would the judges judge him harshly because of it? he’s not sure, but he can’t knock the idea. even when he had discussed with a few friends (namely aiden), they had all supported him even if they had chuckled a bit at the suggestion.

     he even starts practicing it for a bit, before he has a call with his mother and he mentions that he’s trying out for a musical. she had been following the truth untold faithfully, and had live reacted to him in their kakaotalk group chat. he had told her he was considering high school musical for his song of choice, and from the silence he had heard on her end, alec figured that she didn’t approve.

     they chat for a while about it before he promises her that he will not use a high school musical song for a serious musical audition, though he does tell her he can’t promise he won’t use it as the dance audition since he’s really just. not the best dancer around. and he’s had high school musical choreography memorized and learned since before he had ever considered becoming an idol. 

     so he has to go on a hunt for a song that’s decently within his vocal range. he remembers watching korean musicals with his parents whenever they came to visit korea, because his parents both loved watching musicals, and he tries to recall which ones his mom had liked since she had vetoed his high school musical dreams of being the korean version of zac efron.

     eventually he settles on “지금 이 수간” (0:14-2:29) from the musical jekyll and hyde. the song isn’t too hard to sing, but he can put a lot of emotion into the two minutes or so of the song that he gets to sing for the audition. 

     (when he texts his mom about this, she sends him three thumbs up emojis in a row so he assumes that she approves of his choice.)

PART ONE — song / dance audition

     by the time he’s auditioning with the song, alec will admit he’s kind of tired of listening to the song. it’s a good one, and he thinks he’ll do well—even during the ending part where he has to belt the last few notes—but he also never wants to listen to this song again. 

     he sings the part that he had chosen, trying to put as much emotion into it as he can manage without looking like he’s trying too hard. he had rewatched parts of the musical to refresh his mind of what the character was going through when singing this song, so he taps into his acting side (the side he’s more confident in) and showcases the wonder in the main actor’s voice when he’s singing these lines. 

     he’s not a singer, but he doesn’t think he does too badly here. at least he’s not going for a main role, so he’s not too worried about doing the absolute best he can. he doesn’t think he’s cut out for being a musical actor anyway, but he’s going to try his best.

     the second part is the dance routine, and he really does decide to do a part from high school musical (1 this time, and it’s we’re all in this together of course). he’s thankful for rieon for having roped him into a dance workshop, so he could fix up this short routine even if it was just for this audition. he remembers kim family when he had acted as an idol trainee and had ended up needed to go to dance practice and whatnot all over again. it was reminiscent of that time, and he doesn’t hate it too much now that he’s revisited it. 

     his mom is probably going to say he’s terrible for using high school musical in the end and not a ‘real musical’ but he had too much fun to care. 

PART TWO — scenario audition / a

     when he’s finished with that, is when the part that he’s confident in comes up. he’s always been good at improvising on the spot and he hopes that he’s given a scenario that he can work with. 

     hearing the scenario, alec can’t help but laugh to himself at the thought. he’s never been the one in this position before, because he’s usually the one who’s navigating and is usually pretty good with directions. if anything, he tends to be the one who’s asking others if they’re lost so he thinks it’s pretty funny that this is the scenario he was given. he takes a moment to get into character, even pretending to put on sunglasses. he wanders around for a moment, looking very confident in the direction he’s ‘leading’ everyone in before he starts the scenario.

     “what? of course we’re not lost, how could we be lost? do you not understand that i am a master navigator?” he starts off, taking on a haughty tone for the character he had decided he was going to portray. he wants everyone to know that they are most definitely lost, but his character does not believe so.

     “i was top of my class in navigation and i’ll also have you know that i ranked in the top five for map-reading and compass-reading too. there is absolutely no way in hell that we’re lost, do you hear me? not at all, none whatsoever,” he says confidently, pulling out a pretend ‘map’ from his pocket. he ‘opens’ the ‘map’ and turns it this way and that to try to find out where they are. 

     “i can hear you mumbling and grumbling over there, just hold on a minute and i’ll get us going in the right direction again,” he adds, knowing that he was implying that they were currently not going direction, though his character is oblivious to that. he turns the map this way and that, and even comically licks his finger to test the ‘direction of the wind’ before frowning to himself. he adds in a few anecdotes about how he was a great leader—all made up on the spot—to really build up the character he was playing and the situation that he was in.

     “what? i have a what?” he asks, before his eyes widen slightly and he nods to himself. “ah, you’re right. my phone. you kids, always relying on technology, you know back in my day we used to print out google directions to get places you know,” he adds, pulling out his phone to type in the location they were headed to and blinking at the screen. 

     “ah, i see, i was correct all along,” he adds, turning to go back in the direction that he had come. “it’s this way.” 

After a few fast forwarded seconds of the footage, he slams the computer shut. “I don’t think I need to say more.” He begins and sighs, closing his eyes to rub them. “Like Hyemi said earlier, we have commitments that tie our hands. An unfortunate thing on our side, but also the sole reason why you will get to stay in our company.” Before he can begin to feel hopeful, he raises a hand. “However, you will be punished accordingly. First, effective immediately, you are suspended for the next month. You will also be leaving your dorms today. This charming boy,” he points to the man standing next to Hyemi, “is what we call a nanny; he looks after those who are deemed too untrustworthy to be left to their own devices. You will be joining Gunho’s team.”

“For the next month, you will be moving in with him and a couple of other trainees. During your suspension, you will report to the company everyday and sit quietly in a study room with your group during the whole training period. You will only be allowed to attend the mandatory workshop mentioned earlier. Once your month is over, you will be allowed to return to your training group. HOWEVER, you will remain in the dorms overseen by Gunho for an indefinite period of time. This was the good part.” He leans over his desk and casts a glance at Hyemi who is still busy responding to email on her phone. “I’ll get to the point. Miss’ team right here,” he points to Hyemi “has deemed you both too liable to be promoted. Therefore, for the next year, you have been barred from participating in anything related to FUTURE DREAMS and LGC BOYS, which includes our company’s concert. You will be allowed back on LGC variety shows in September. Only the variety shows.” He stares at him, hoping he understands the gravity of the situation. “Gunho, he is all yours, you may go now.”
