First, try taking a deep breath. Do not let your partner’s reply overwhelm you with its impressive form. STARE IT DOWN. This is only for fun and it’s not like replying to an employer or professor.

Depending on your style, you can start you reply off by either “catching up” or go straight to “following”. If you’re catching up, you post stuff in reply to what happened in your partner’s reply. So if they do multiple actions to your muse(s), you squeeze in how your character reacted to each prompt. This could be messy to read as followers need to go back and forth and it’s like a lag between the replies. If you choose to simply follow through, you continue the thread/story from where your partner ended. Talk about how your character reacts/reacted to the last thing that happened, describe the current/new situation, write about what will happen, or give them new motives, just carry on.

Break your reply into easy-to-read paragraphs based on time and/or mood. General tip is to start a new paragraph when your muse speaks. This might happen immediately at the start of your reply or after a few replies of reflection/description/explanation.

Get filling. Simple sentences are fine. Run-on sentences and lines with too many adjectives get tiresome to read. Don’t skimp out on details! Let everyone know how your character feels, even if they’re the “quiet and mysterious” type. Quiet doesn’t mean emotionless or unimaginative. Help paint an environment if the thread has one. You can get away with leaving it vague if there’s no plot or something. But general long threads have a setting. How many hours has it been? What can be seen, felt, heard, smelled, or tasted? Did your character have any small actions to convey their thoughts? Like scratching their nose or glancing around and avoiding eye contact?

At this point, it really does become writing a story with your partner. But remember it’s just roleplay and most roleplayers are okay if your replies don’t match theirs (just so long as you don’t reply with 5 words to their 500 words). Unless you’re trying to end the thread, remember to make it easy when you pass the story back to your partner. Ask their muse a question or prompt them via interaction.
