Maybe you just want to organize your pantry, or maybe you feel completely overwhelmed in your home and want to transform your space - room by room. Amy is all about your needs and making your life easier.Â
Read on for tips from Amy to help you organize like a pro.
The Scout Guide (TSG): What are some quick, easy changes people can make to help organize their homes on their own?
Amy: Itâs important to start small and not to try and take on too much at once. Simple things like the use of a well placed bin can help to contain items so that they donât take over. For example, I encourage clients to keep a basket at the bottom of their stairs. This becomes the âcatch allâ for things that have migrated downstairs and/or out of place. Once a day, preferably in the evening, make it a habit to put back everything youâve accumulated in the basket. It wonât take long and it will help to maintain clear, calm spaces before retiring for the night.
I actually have a few pages on my website dedicated to my favorite organization tools. Â

Another one of my favorite tips is to utilize hooks, especially Command Hooks. They used to be just white and plastic, but now make them in all different shapes and finishes that look and feel like real hardware. I use them to hang backpacks, handbags, coats, towels, umbrellas, etc. It keeps things easy to find, within reach, aesthetically pleasing and doesnât involve any special tools to install them.
Lastly, I suggest sorting your mail before you set it on any surface in your home. Recycle junk mail immediately, place bills where you keep your computer or checkbook and put reading material where you typically read (on a bedside table or next to your favorite chair). This daily practice prevents paper clutter from taking up your time and your space. If you have kids, have them go through their backpacks while you are going through mail so they get in the habit of reducing paper clutter as well.
TSG: Being tidy and being organized are two different things. Why is it helpful to hire an expert to help with smart organization?
Amy: People should hire a professional organizer for the same reason they would hire an accountant to do their taxes or work with a personal trainer to get in shape. In our homes, just like in our lives, we get into habits that can be difficult to break without a trusted expert by your side. Whether your space is getting too cluttered, or you are always trying to find things, a professional organizer can provide a fresh perspective.
Ultimately, It's not about making a junk drawer temporarily look like a Pinterest post. It's about changing the way you use your space, allowing you to discover more time, resources, balance and bliss.Â
