Sunghoon was pouting again. Arms crossed, lips puffed out, and eyebrows drawn together in a sulky knot. He sat slumped on the practice room floor, textbook open on his lap, English flashcards scattered everywhere like confetti after a failed parade.
Jake and Jay exchanged knowing glances from where they were sprawled beside him, already sensing the incoming tantrum. Their baby was so cute like this. Eyebrows furrowed in concentration and his eyes all confused.
“This doesn’t make sense,” Sunghoon whined, dramatically collapsing backward onto the floor. “Why does ‘read’ and ‘read’ look the same but sound different? I hate English.”
Jay chuckled and leaned over him, arms crossed over his knees. “You’ve been stuck on the same five verbs for an hour, Hoonie. We need a new method.”
Sunghoon rolled his eyes. “Like what? Osmosis?”
Jake’s eyes lit up. “Nope. Better.”
Sunghoon blinked. “What does that mean—wait. No. Guys—”
But it was too late.
Jay launched forward and pinned Sunghoon’s wrists above his head, grinning wickedly as Jake took his place near Sunghoon’s sides, wiggling his fingers ominously.
“New strategy,” Jake said brightly. “Every time you mess up a sentence, you get tickled. For a full minute. No exceptions.”
“And if you try to beg in Korean,” Jay added, “We double the time.”
Sunghoon’s eyes went wide. A mix of horror and anticipation. “Wait. That’s—no. No no no—PLEHEASE!!”
The first mistake came quickly. Of course it did. Sunghoon’s nerves were completely fried from nervous expectation.
Jake asked, “How do you say, ‘I want to eat ice cream’?”
Sunghoon blinked. “Uh…I ice cream…want to eating?”
The grin that spread on Jake’s face was too gleeful. “Wrong~”
“No—no wait, please—!” Sunghoon shrieked, twisting as Jake’s fingers dug into his ribs while Jay held him firm. “AHAHAHAHHHAA JAKE!! JAHAHHAY HYUHUHUHUNG NOOOO!”
“Don’t scream in Korean,” Jay warned, chuckling as Sunghoon kicked frantically, “Say ‘Stop, please!’”
But poor Sunghoon was too busy squealing, laughter tumbling from him in pure, high-pitched bursts as Jake scribbled mercilessly at his worst spot—his sides. Specifically, the space just beneath his ribs, where the tickles made him cackle uncontrollably, his voice jumping octaves.
“AHAHAHAHAHA NOHOHO PLEHEHEASEEEEEE—!”
Jake paused. “That’s not English.”
Sunghoon’s face burned. “STAHAHAHAP—pleh—pleahhease plehehEHEHEASE stop! STOP!” He cried. This was humiliating. He could already feel tears at the corners of his lashes from the intensity at which his laughter punched out of him.
“There we go~” Jay nodded approvingly. “See? He can learn when he’s being tortured.”
The next hour was filled with squeals and hiccupy giggles as the two older members took turns helping him study. Every mistake was met with a fresh wave of tickles—Jake targeting the sides and tummy, Jay going for the backs of his knees and that one horrible spot on his neck that made him squeal.
And when the dreaded “finger crawlies” as Jay liked to call them, crept slowly up his shirt, tracing just under his arms, Sunghoon lost it, thrashing wildly and bursting into high-pitched laughter that sounded far too cute for his own good.
They let up every once in a while for a break, but Sunghoon was whining by the time it ended. Jake’s hands crept to the seam of his shirt again.
Sunghoon let out a weak whimper. “Noooo…”
Jake ruffled his hair with mock sympathy. “C’mon, Hoonie, baby. That was just your warm-up. You’ve got a whole alphabet’s worth of vocabular to get through.”
Jay leaned down beside him. “Say: ‘Jake and Jay are the best English teachers.’”
“No.”
Jake raised a brow. “You sure?”
Sunghoon tensed. Jay’s fingers were already spidering dangerously close to his hip. He crumbled. Almost immediately.
“Jake and Jay are the best English teachers!” He cried. “PLEHEASE!!”
“Now say, “Gaeul is a cute dog.””
“Say it right, and we’ll let you go,” Jake said brightly.
Sunghoon, still breathless and trembling from residual laughter, nodded.
“Gaeul…is…a very cute…d-dog.”
They waited. Silent.
Jake raised a brow. “Good. Now add: ‘She is my best friend.’”
Sunghoon’s lip wobbled. “She is…a best f-friend.” He winced as if he already knew it was wrong.
Jay was ruthless.
He dug in, thumbs pressing into the hollows of his hips, then wiggling and circling in those exact evil little ways that had Sunghoon’s entire brain detonate with ticklish electricity.
“HYUHUHUHUHUNG!! I CAN’T I CAHAHAHAN’T—!!”
“Sure you can,” Jake said sweetly, fingers now scratching lightly over the bones, dipping into that soft spot just below. “You’re doing great.”
Sunghoon’s eyes squeezed shut, his head thrown back in complete and utter defeat as his laugh burst out in full-volume, gorgeous chaos.
It wasn’t his usual polite giggle. Not even the cackly kind he gave when he was caught off guard.
No—this was the real laugh. The totally helpless, unfiltered, almost childish one that only ever came out when he was being completely and utterly destroyed.
He sounded ten years younger.
“AAHAHAHAHAAA JahaahahhaHAHAHAHAKE HELP MEHEHEHE!!”
“You asked me not to!” Jake laughed, tightening his grip. “You said I couldn’t tickle and pin at the same time!! Apparently that’s too mean for you~”
“THAHAHAT WAS BEFORE—!!”
“English, please,” Jake reminded him.
But Sunghoon couldn’t form words anymore. He was squealing, shaking, twisting desperately in his spot while Jake dragged all ten fingers up and down his hips with devilish precision. Sometimes he’d squeeze. Sometimes he’d do little spirals. Sometimes he’d just vibrate his fingertips and Sunghoon would howl.
“PLEHEHHEHEHEHEASE!! GAEUL IS MY BEHEHEHEHEST FRIEND!! THE BESTEHEHEHEST!!” Hoonie squealed.
At the mention of her name, Gaeul trotted in with her ears perked and a curious little head tilt. She blinked up at the scene: her beloved human, squirming and shrieking on the floor, two other humans pinning him down and making him cackle like a child. Her tail gave a confused little wag.
“Gaeheheul—” Sunghoon squealed through tears, voice high and squeaky. “Sahahahhave meeee—!”
Jake paused, laughing. “Aw, Gaeul, come say hi to your appa!”
Sunghoon tried to scramble up, but Jay held him in place, and Jake just shifted to let Gaeul pad closer. She sniffed at Sunghoon’s head before giving it a gentle lick, which only made him whimper more. “Even she thinks I’m pathetic…”
Meanwhile, Gaeul was discombobulated. There was her human. Lying on the floor. Hair a mess. Face red. Eyes teary. The other humans looming over him while he trembled and gasped, and the moment he opened his mouth they pounced.
He exploded.
Jake had pounced just as he opened his mouth, fingers worming mercilessly into Sunghoon’s underarms, and the poor boy completely lost it. His head thrashed, his laugh turned into this wild, squeaky, shrieky mess of noise, echoing off the walls in helpless waves.
“NAHAHAHHAH PLEHEHEHEASE NO MORE NO MOHOHOHOHORE!!”
“Say it properly!” Jake barked, gleeful, as he zeroed in on the worst spot—those devastating fingers crawling slowly, slowly dancing up the sides of his ribcage.
Sunghoon was hysterical.
His limbs flailed uselessly, his laugh breaking up into these adorable staccato gasps, like he couldn’t even process what was happening to him. He arched his back, mouth wide open, face a tomato.
And Gaeul just…watched.
With big, confused eyes, she tilted her head again as her beloved owner screamed with laughter like a preschooler, squealing and squeaking and cackling in the most undignified way imaginable.
She stepped forward, sniffed dismissively at his twitching hand, then sat neatly beside him—ears perked as if trying to understand what horrible thing was happening to the man who usually gave her treats. Who was normally so composed.
“IHIHIHI SAHHAHAHHAID IHIHIT!!” Sunghoon wailed.
“In English, please,” Jay reminded him, flicking his fingers at the backs of his knees now.
“GAEUL IHIHIS A CUHUHUTE DOHOHOOG!!!”
Jake relented—barely—and Sunghoon collapsed like a broken doll, mouth open, cheeks shiny with ticklish tears, one hand reaching blindly for Gaeul, who gave it a confused little lick.
“Good girl,” Jake cooed at the pup. “She’s your witness now, Hoon.”
Jay chuckled, leaning down to brush Sunghoon’s sweaty bangs from his eyes. “You know, we should bring her to all our lessons. Seems like you try harder when she’s here.”
Hoon could only whine. “Nohoho mohohore…”
Safe to say he wouldn’t mess up his English again, especially not when the promise of fingers working into his sides at every mistake was still molded into his mind.
