"Get the fuck out there now, Danny! We need to move!" Leo snarled as he closed in on Daniel and pushed him against the alley wall. His voice was low, harsh and commanding but laced with raw desperation.
"You think hiding like a scared little bitch is gonna save us? They're right there waiting for you. Go out there and you do what I taught you. Tear them apart. Make them bleed. Or we both die in this shithole tonight!"
Daniel's eyes were wide, chest rising and falling much too fast just like his panicked breaths as his heart raced. "Leo, I-I can't... There's too many, it's ov-"
"Bullshit!" Leo didn't dare to let him finish as his grip tightened so much his knuckles whitened. His voice cracked from the raw desperation beneath his stern demeanor. "You're not quitting on me now. Not after everything. Not after I dragged your sorry ass this far. So move!"
For a moment, the world narrowed to just them. Daniel stopped struggling. Leo's words died on his lips. Their eyes locked, Daniel's wide and haunted and Leo's fierce and stormy but almost softening, just slightly.
The distant shouts of the hunters seemed to be drowned out by the sound of their breaths and pounding of their hearts. For a moment it was just the two of them, breathing the same cold night air, bodies close in the tight space.
Something hung over them. Not the usual venom or commands, something deep, raw and electric. A bond formed in blood and madness, the strange twisted intimacy of two minds in one broken body, fighting for the dying chance of freedom.
Leo released his grip on Daniel's arm only to move his hand down and over his, his two remaining fingers and thumb taking hold. Gripping but not rough this time, grounding him.
They had something special. Something violent and ugly but burning with desperate tension and intimacy underneath it all.
Leo wasn't just the voice in his head to him anymore, not just the killer personality sample the Project tried to weaponize. He was the only one who truly saw Daniel now, not like their enemies closing in on them out there. He saw his flaws, guilt, terror and all. They hated each other as much as they needed each other.
Their fight for survival, freedom and revenge bound them tighter than the Pickman Bridge ever imagined.
Leo's voice dropped as he closed the space between them even further, almost a growl against Daniel's ear. "We get through this, we get out⦠we're free. No more Project, no more running, just us. You hear me? Together."
Daniel swallowed hard, the tension hot like a live wire but his gaze didn't waver. "Yeah," he whispered back, sounding shaky but desperate to cling to a sliver of hope.
"Together."
Leo held the stare a second longer, something almost tender flickering beneath the brutality.
The moment shattered with a shout from the street. "They're over there!" followed by the unmistakable racking of guns.
Leo released Daniel with a final shove but it lacked the earlier anger. He stepped back, rolling his shoulders as that manic grin crept back onto his face with determination. "Now move, pipsqueak. Let's give 'em hell."
Daniel stood up taller again, fear still lingering but now tempered by urgent resolve. For the fight for survival, for Leo, for whatever the hell this was between them.
They emerged from the alley together, movements synced in the unnatural intimate way only they understood.
Bullets flew and blood sprayed but in the chaos they fought not just to survive but for the dream of what came after. Beyond the clouds, the open road, the voices and laughter, no hunters and no chains bounding them to this cruel dark reality. Freedom. And each other.
Whatever "together" looked like for two fractured souls like them, they wanted it. And they would carve it out of this mess with their bare hands if they had to.
