Hi, I've never been able to really sit down and grind. What advice do you have for studying? How does one study? What do you do to study? What are great studying tricks/habits?Jessie
Hello! Getting ourselves to study is always very difficult, so here are some tricks that work for me:
1. Just get started: I think thereās a more official name for this study method, but the basic idea is that the hardest part is just getting startedāso everything will be easier as soon as you get over this hump. You donāt have to say things likeĀ āIāll study for 30 minutes straightā orĀ āI canāt check my phone until I finish this assignmentā because that often just leads you to putting things off even more. Just say:Ā āIāll simply start it. I donāt have to finish it.ā And I find that once I start working on something, the start gives me enough momentum to finish it.
2. Finish things you can do in under five minutes: This is pretty self-explanatory. If you can finish it in 5-10 minutes, just do it! Itāll be satisfying to check it off your to-do list, and itās one less thing to worry about.
3. Split up big projects into small to-dos: This is something I do excessively. Having a to-do likeĀ āStudy physicsā can be very intimidating, because that involves things like doing practice problems, reading the textbook, writing notes, etc. It makes me want to put it off until I get everything else done. However, instead of writing this one big to-do, I write separate to-doās forĀ āread textbook,āĀ āwrite notes,ā andĀ ādo practice problems for chapter.ā Thus, I donāt feel obligated to do it all at once.Ā
4. Study a bit every day: I didnāt start doing this until college started, but this study habit is really really helpful! If I donāt get something from class, the first thing I do when I get back is read the textbook and understand it, so that I donāt fall behind. Every time we finish I chapter in physics, instead of waiting until a couple days before the midterm to do practice problems, I do 20 practice problems from each chapter. Study as you go!
These are the study habits I employ in my everyday life, so I hope this helps!Ā
