Alternatively, wait for Jade. Either way, you close your laptop with a sigh, get up, grab a pack, and head outside. At this point, you don't even have to say a word to hear the quick patpatpat against the wooden floor, aided by light clinking following you through and out the house, always just at your heels. It's grown to be a comforting noise and, sometimes, one that makes you happier, too.

Once you're on the porch, the cold night air hits you, and you shiver a little.  You should probably go back in and grab a coat, but a, you don't feel like it, and b, after how much you had been sweating in the past hour, it's rather refreshing. So, you just settle on the steps, and your faithful companion sits beside you, panting happily. One side of your mouth curls up in a smile, and you scratch her head for a moment, praising her. She tilts her head as you stop, though, and your eyebrows furrow. She knows something's off. She isn't wrong - it is.

"I dunno, Mei," you sigh, and she lets out a small whine before laying down, and you lean back. You pull out your lighter and pack, pulling out a single cigarette. It only takes a small, quick movement for the flame to shoot up from the lighter, and another one for the end of your cigarette to be lit. You stare at the glowing end for just a moment, then bring the clean end to your lips, and take a long, slow drag. It's a relieving feeling, really. You enjoy it. The taste of the smoke used to be bitter to you, but that's changed: Now, it's one of your favorites.
