The Algerian deathsters spill their guts on the new e.p, Melechesh and their Polish label affiliations Where do the names Lelahel and Lelahell come from? Lelahel is a zodiac angel (the sixth among the 72 kabbalah’s angels) when we add ‘l’ it is Lelahell the angel from hell. Have you ever seen an angel from hell? Yes it is Lelahell!! You use Lelahel as a stage name. Is this band something of a solo project for you? I started it as a one man band first, but I decided to include musicians to make it more human and more organic. There is a great difference when you play with computer than humans. Death metal is a music that has to be played by humans not machines! Do you get much chance to play outside of Algeria? The band has played three shows since its inception, one for friends and family, another with fellow Algerian band Thowar and one that was a heavy metal contest organized by the U.S. Embassy. We have some plan for other local and international shows, we are just waiting confirmations What inspires your lyrics? We get the inspiration from our daily life, and past experiences nothing more. In the first EP “al Intihar” (which means suicide) Lelahell’s music deal with : 01. Emperor: It’s about the emperor Nero, and his 14 years of reign. The history repeats itself, right? 02. Al Moutanabi was an Arab (Iraqi-born) poet. He is considered as one of the greatest poets in the Arabic language. He had a great pride in himself through his poetry. I choose one of his most famous poetry to describe the egomaniacal nature of humans .03. Into The Past remind us all the evil man may have done throughout its existence: destruction, murder, lies, disasters, etc. .. And he continues to do 04. Al Ihtiqar Just few words and some melodies to describe the despise 05. Hermanos A story of friends who were at the beginning like blood brothers, but life goes well change things Are you more inspired by traditional/old-school death metal or by more modern bands? Our riffs are more old school oriented and our sound and rhythms are more modern. I started to listen and play extreme metal in the early 90’s, so when you listen to lelahell music it is like you are listening 90’s riffs with actual drumming techniques. Algeria was recently deemed an ‘authoritarian’ regime by the Democracy index (2010) in the west, and a Freedom of the Press report (2009) listed the country as being ‘Not free’. What are your thoughts on that? Do the politics in Algeria make it difficult for the Metal community? To be direct I don’t care about politics at all! Metal is difficult in all around the world, so we have to stay united and work for spreading this music around us! Does the Religious Community in Algeria cause problems for metal bands? I don’t know for others but since now I never had those kind of problems Is there a metal community in Algeria outside of the capital city? Yes there is a metal community outside the capital and it is concentrated in big cities such Constantine, Annaba and Oran. In 1999 the first national rock festival was organized in Annaba and it was the first time that we met so many metal musicians and metal fans from many Algerian cities! Have you got any major label ambitions or are you happy to stay underground? Our Ep was released by an underground polish label called goressimo records; Krzistof the owner did a great job! We are very satisfied. For the first full length we have some plans but no major labels yet, maybe in the second or third full length why not? Are you inspired by other bands from the Middle East and Africa, or do you mostly listen to American and European bands? Is this the case for other bands in Algeria as well? We are inspired by American and European bands only because metal was created in those 2 areas. And it is the case for all Algerian bands. There are some great bands in Middle East and Africa but their music isn’t mature enough to be an influence. For example Melechesh and orphaned land are great bands but we can’t compare them to Slayer or Metallica! Well, personally I'd dispute that last point but maybe that's just me. Al Intihar is a grizzly slab of maimed riffs and shrieking solos that fans of Vader and Dismember alike will foam at the mouth over
