The left wing of Greece’s SYRIZA government has gained ground as Europe’s ruling classes continue to strangle the country and inflict devastation on the Greek working class.
Under agreements signed by former governments and a current arrangement – negotiated by the current parliamentary leadership led by prime minister Alexis Tsipras and finance minister Yanis Varoufakis – SYRIZA, which was elected on an anti-austerity platform, is being directed to run primary fiscal surpluses despite an unending economic depression.
SYRIZA’s central committee met on 23 and 24 May to discuss a way forward. Forty-four percent voted in favour of a Left Platform motion calling for an end to austerity and an alternative economic plan to alleviate the suffering of the working class.
