'Led Zeppelin Vinyl' is a Staff Pick Holiday Gift Book for Music (& Design) Lovers! Drawn from the beyond-extensive collection of noted music photographer @rosshalfin (author of that other 2021 Holiday Gift Staff Pick for Music Lovers, 'Metallica: The Black Album in Black & White'), these spreads picture just a few of the 800 items featured in Reel Art Press's irresistible new compendium, Led Zeppelin Vinyl: The Essential Collection. Featuring rare, international, bootleg, hand-made and otherwise compelling or unusual vinyl above and beyond the eight studio albums made by the band during their indelible twelve-year run, this is a book not only for lovers of Led Zeppelin and/or classic rock, but design aficionados and collectors of vintage ephemera of any type. Each of the records chosen by Halfin is of unique interest visually or historically. In addition, the book contains the most up-to-date, comprehensive discography ever compiled on the band, listing every known album and vinyl single from around the world—with catalogue numbers, release or recording dates and notes. Happy to see that 3 of our favorite 2021 books are included in Indulge magazine's Books & Vinyl recommendations this month. LED ZEPPELIN VINYL: The Essential Collection By @rosshalfin @reelartpress "Vinyl has stormed back from a slumber, and what better way to celebrate the repertoire of the legendary band than to take a journey through their albums? Featured here are more than 300 of some of the most unique and interesting variations of the artwork and colored vinyl, including regional variations and rarities as documented by Halfin, a veteran music industry photographer. Mind boggling when you consider that Led Zeppelin released only 8 studio albums and no singles during the span of their 12-year career." DAMIEN HIRST: CHERRY BLOSSOMS @fondationcartier "This large-format presentation of @damienhirst cherry blossoms features full color versions of 107 new works and 18 gatefold spreads to treat you to the spectacular, and what the artist has somewhat self-deprecatingly described as his 'garish, messy and fragile' flowers. Paintings like 'Wonderful World Blossom' and diptychs like 'Renewal Blossom' are presented in all their elating bursts of glory, but we also love photographs of Hirst’s studio and his accoutrements, which are no less mesmerizing, and the accompanying 4 unbiased essays from art critics." THE ART & CRAFT OF GARDEN MAKING By Thomas H. Mawson & E. Prentice Mawson @bokforlagetstolpe British garden designer, landscape architect and town planner, Thomas H. Mawson’s classic go-to guide for gardening from 1900 has been lovingly reproduced in this luxurious facsimile bound in cloth, gold detailing and edenic color illustrations. Not just a stunning art piece in itself, the book is also a timeless and invaluable tool for professionals and hobbyists, addressing numerous concerns like 'The Choice of a Site and Its Treatment' and 'Flower Gardens, Beds, and Borders.' #ledzeppelinvinyl #damienhirst #damienhirstcherryblossoms #artandcraftofgardenmaking #victoriangardening https://www.instagram.com/p/CUu2RkGs_HT/?utm_medium=tumblr
More from 'Led Zeppelin Vinyl: The Essential Collection' by @rosshalfin who captions the images here: 1. Portugal single. 2. Australian 4 track EP released by Atlantic without the band's knowledge. 3. 'Bonzo’s Birthday Party' 1973 TMOQ Label recorded on John Bonham's Birthday - William Stout did the cover art while a student. He was paid $50 a cover. One of the most famous and copied Led Zeppelin covers. 4. Knebworth, 1979. Litchenstein cover art. 5. 'Black Dog' turkey, 1971. 6. 'Pb' — the very first Led Zeppelin bootleg, from a radio broadcast March 1970 - 'Pb' as in ‘Pure Blues.' It is also the sign in physics for ‘LEAD’ — very clever title. Only 500 pressed and almost impossible to find. A few samples from 'Led Zeppelin Vinyl: The Essential Collection' by collector/connoisseur/music photographer @rosshalfin — who supplies captions here: 1. Blue writing UK First Pressing 'LZ I' - which was the wrong color - it was supposed to be Orange. Corrected on the second pressing. How many no one seems to know — they turn up at every record fair and online it is always expensive. I think they pressed around 10,000 although @jimmypage did tell me he didn't see it or find out about it until much later. 2. Turkey 'LZ II' - No idea why this is different - If anyone can tell me why or what the drawing is I’d love to know. It sells for between $200 - $4,000 if you can find it. 3. 'LIVE ON BLUEBERRY HILL' - BLIMP RECORDS On Colored Vinyl recorded at the LA Forum September 4th 1970. The second ever LZ Bootleg and the one that was everywhere at the time - great show although during "Bron-Yr-Aur" Jimmy Page just gives up as the crowd are screaming and not listening . it sounds cavernous but that just adds to the charm of the show. They come back for several encores finishing with Fats Domino’s 'Blueberry Hill' — hence the title. 4 'Led Zeppelin IV' - India 5 'My Brain Hertz' - Acetate Seattle 1975 great show great cover limited bespoke pressed to order and numbered. 6. 'Living Loving Maid' Japanese single - look at Jimmy Page’s Yardbirds shoes. New from @reelartpress (publisher of 'Led Zeppelin by Led Zeppelin) — 'Led Zeppelin Vinyl: The Essential Collection' by @rosshalfin @ledzeppelin released only eight studio albums and no singles over the course of their 12-year career, but to date there are more than 1,000 singles and 2,000 LPs in the market. This definitive volume illustrates in full color some of the rarest and most interesting vinyl releases, including one-of-a-kind rarities, bizarre regional variations, official albums and historic recordings of legendary concerts, sometimes featuring handmade artwork or colored vinyl. The vinyl, labels and covers have been documented by photographer Ross Halfin in superb detail and are annotated with details of their release. In addition, the book includes over forty pages of the most up-to-date comprehensive discography ever compiled on the band, with forensic detail. All known album and single vinyl releases from around the world are listed with catalogue numbers, release or recording dates and additional notes. A labor of love, 'Led Zeppelin Vinyl' is a must-have for fans of the group and vinyl enthusiasts. It is a paean of praise to vinyl artwork and graphic design: The illustrations are explosive and surreal, playful, experimental and subversive, interpreting multiple artistic disciplines with flair and wit. Ross Halfin is one of the best-known photographers in the world and has been working in the music industry since 1977. He has a record collection almost as extensive as his photo archive.
