claustrophobic. Trapped in the tight, shadowed cabin of the patrol car for twelve-hour shifts, the tension was a quiet, suffocating thing. It was measured in the inches between their shoulders across the center console, the low hum of the dashboard heater, and the way the passing streetlights briefly illuminated a sharp jawline or a lingering glance in the rearview mirror. In the dark, they learned to read each other's breathing, turning proximity into a beautiful, agonizing torture. By day, the static changed shape. Out on the pavement on the motorcycles, they were entirely exposed to the eyes of the city. Encased in heavy leather and body armor, they rode side-by-side, cutting through traffic like a single machine. On the bikes, the fascination became kinetic—the roar of the engines vibrating through their chests, the sharp, synchronized tilt into every turn, and the low, distorted cadence of each other's voices fed directly into their helmet headsets. They were constantly close, yet completely out of reach. Night shifts fueled the obsession; day shifts fueled the adrenaline. Until the two worlds collided right here, in the middle of a bustling midday intersection. Stepping off the bikes, the sudden idle of the engines left a vacuum that neither could fight anymore. The rigid discipline of the daylight, the public gaze, the heavy gear—none of it could hold back the accumulated weight of those long, dark nights in the car. As hands locked around leather-clad waists right on the white lines of the crosswalk, the code of conduct dissolved into the exhaust fumes. They didn't care who was watching from behind the windshields, or what the precinct would say when the shift ended. The future had shrunk to the space between them. For the first time in months, they weren't listening to the radio. They were finally, irrevocably, 10-7. In police and emergency radio communication, 10-7 means "Out of Service."
