Regarding the fandom thing: it might not be actual discourse so much as it is... sheer volume. Like more "God I'm seeing too much of this please make it stop". I could be completely wrong tho but that's what I got out of it.
Answering this a bit late but I tend to see it the same way. There are some characters that I ended up disliking at first, not because of their role in the fandom but because I saw them EVERYWHERE and didn’t understand the appeal at first.Of course, I’m okay with the characters when I actually learn about them more (usually!) unless they’re not my type or are nonredeemable.
