Week 5 Lectures..
Week 5 lectures started with WEP (wired Equivalent Privacy). WEP is a security protocol that is designed to provide an extra level of security to the WLAN. Richard then moved on towards hashes where her discussed MD5, SHA0, SHA1, SHA2 and SHA3. only SHA2 and SHA3 are not broken where as the remaining of them are broken and can be manipulated or exploited without the use of brute-force.
Moreover, MDC(merkle Damgard Construction) was introduced which is a method through which a collision resistant hash functions are made. In order to achieve it a message is broken down into a series of blocks. starts with the initialization vector. Given a hash function it take the initialization vector and block 1 and its done on all blocks to achieve a hash.
Furthermore, Digital signatures were discussed and how they are used for authentication and making sure the right person sent the email. however, it can still be exploited with hash collisions.
Overall, week 5 was pretty hectic as we had an exam of on the Saturday and could not focus on the lecture.
