Two evenings ago, I had quite the interesting experience which I am thankful for — a chance to have dinner and drinks with Petr Novak, a judge who hears criminal cases in the Municipal Court of Prague. It was partially in celebration of @hsinister 's birthday. Communication was limited because I speak neither Czech nor Slovak and he has had little chance to practise his English, having lived through the period the former nation of Czechoslovakia was communist. However, with some help from Robert (his son-in-law who speaks English more fluently) and Google translate, we managed. I learnt a bit about their court system, such as the fact that District Courts in Prague cannot hear cases where the sentence is 8 years or more. Such cases are brought to the Municipal Court where he sits. Above the Municipal Court they have the High Court and the "Highest Court", a.k.a. the Supreme Court. They also have a Constitutional Court which exists separately from other court hierarchy. In turn, I too shared a little about our court structure. I also shared that I work for RHTLaw Taylor Wessing LLP and used Google maps' street-view to show him where Taylor Wessing's office was located in Prague. He recognised the name and also found the fact that RHTLaw was a part of the Taylor Wessing quite fascinating and related this to Robert. To think this meeting and exchange occurred l because Robert and his wife, Teresa, had been checking out our bright yellow Suzuki Swift. As it happens, my parents were returning to the car. My mum then made Robert's acquaintance. That was back in 2013. We all met up two days ago because Robert and Teresa love Singapore and they are back here for a holiday. They have all extended an invitation to visit them in Prague. Perhaps some day in the not too distant future, God willing. I think I would enjoy the experience.
