It is #InternationalVultureAwarenessDay. Vultures are often judged by their looks, and to some they aren’t as beautiful as other birds. To others, their looks simply highlight some of their amazing adaptations. Did you know the scientific name for the Turkey Vulture is Cathartes aura meaning ‘golden purifier’ perhaps due to their ability to clean up their environment. Feather colors are determined by pigments, or by light refracting off the structure of the feather.
