before  the  world  had  fallen  to  pieces  around  them,  althea  had  grown  up  in  chicago.  the  winters  there  had  often  been  cold  and  SNOWY.  she  was  used  to  it.  but  the  cold  of  wyoming  felt  DIFFERENT  somehow.  it  dug  deep  into  her  bones  and  left  her  shivering  no  matter  how  many  layers  she  wore.  it  was  inevitable  that  even  a  short  amount  of  time  out  on  the  coldest  days  would  leave  her  grumpy  and  COLD.  but  the  town  couldn’t  simply  stop.  they  had  WORK  to  do  and  supplies  to  gather  and  people  to  feed.  even  if  she  was  cold.

            the snow has freshly fallen and the crisp air is enough to steal his breath ,   but oh how it feels so extraordinarily good on this morning .        he’s gotten up early to help with the stalls and chop wood for anyone that might be running low .       the nights will not be kind to them and being ready is a must .  he’s bundled up to help him fend off the cold in a heavy jacket , boots  , and a beanie . the air nips at the open skin causing it to turn bright red , a harsh contrast against the white background . 

he feels a hand at his back , and for awhile after arriving here that small gesture was almost too much . being out beyond the walls had made him skittish and as much as he’d enjoyed affection , the world had swayed him against the simplest of touches . now though he accepts it ( mostly from just maria ) she speaks first acknowledging how proud she is of him and when he turns , paul cannot withhold the smile  .  

     “  how  are  you  feeling  ?  ”  a  lot  had  happened  lately.  TOO  MUCH.  but  the  woman  hadn’t  faltered  once  and  she  was  continuously  in  awe  of  her  and  her  strength.  but  althea  knew  that  even  the  strongest  people  needed  someone  to  CHECK  IN  sometimes.  needed  someone  to  help  carry  all  the  weight  that  rested  heavily  on  their  shoulders.  “  i  know  things  have  been  all  over  the  place  lately.  ”
