Frostbites usually occur when the body is exposed to extreme temperatures of cold and the water ends up freezing in the tissues of the body. Due to the freezing of the body tissues, ice crystals are formed in there which prevents the flow of blood to the particular area, causing the tissue severe damage or forcing it to die. It is mostly the extremities of the body such as the fingers, toes, ears, nose, lips, chin, cornea, shins and cheeks which are subject to frostbites, as held by the New York University Langone Medical Center. Frostbites can entail permanent damage to the tissues which have been affected and in some extreme though rare cases, frostbites may also lead to amputations.
However, frostbites can be easily prevented if the right measures are put to place. Here are some tips on how to prevent frostbites and staying safe under extreme severe cold weather conditions.
