Liam was apocalyptic when he burst through the apartment door. âWhat happened to collaboration, Walker?â
âI called you, didnât I?â
âYeah, you called me.â Liam fumed as he pulled on a pair of gloves before entering the kitchen. âAfter you contaminated my crime scene!â
âOh, calm down. No one contaminated anything. I know how toââ
âAnd you brought a reporter here!â He shot a withering glare across the room at Riley.
The unflappable reporter smiled and gave him a little wave. âIâm a witness now.â
Drake held both hands up in the air in front of him. âTo be fair, she brought me here soâŠâ
âJust shut up, both of you.â He shook his head as he made his way over to the body where the medical examiner was already crouched over the victim. âHey, Hana. Howâs it going?â
âI canât complain,â she smiled up at him, âBut this poor girlâŠâ
âYeah. What do we know so far?â
âBlunt force trauma to the head.â
The apartment was swarming with officers. One of them approached him, âYou must be the homicide detective from the seventh precinct.â
âThatâs right, Liam Rys.â He shook the squat balding guy's hand.â
âSteve Carlson. The twelfth precinct is happy to collaborate with you, but this is our case.â
âOf course, but the vic was a suspect in my case.â
As the two detectives hammered out jurisdictional concerns, Drake made his way over to Riley. âYou sure know how to get a guy sideways with people heâs supposed to be getting along with.â
âHow was I supposed to know our witness was going to be dead when we got here?â
He just smiled as he shook his head. âI told you that you were going to be trouble.â
âNothing you canât handle, Iâm sure.â She teased.
âIâm not so sure about that,â he mused.
âHave you learned anything new?â
âYouâve been with me the entire time weâve been here.â
âNot true. You were with the police when they searched the place while I was exiled to this couch, waiting to be questioned.â
âWell, I didnât learn much exceptâŠâ
Riley perked up. âExcept what?â
Drake paused to consider what he should tell her. His client had only hired him to investigate Trentâs murder. Sarahâs murder was likely related, but he couldnât fathom a motive for either Katie or William Sloan to have killed her. So what he had learned didnât fall under client privilege. He didnât see how the information could hurt his client, and thatâs all he cared about.
âExcept that the murder weapon was her own rolling pin.â
âShe was killed with a rolling pin?â
âIt was one of those heavy, marble ones.â
âHuh.â
âHuh, what?â
âWeapon of opportunity.â
âLooks like it.â
âJust like Trentâs gun.â
âThatâs a pattern.â
âYeah⊠butâŠ. â
âWhat?â
âOk, so the motive was jealousy. Sabrina kills Trent, then gets in her car and goes to kill Sarah, right?â
âThatâs the working theory, yeah.â
âWhy didnât she just bring the gun with her? I mean, she didnât know there would be a handy murder weapon lying around this place. She could have just brought the gun.â
âMaybe she wasnât thinking clearly. She shot Trent and panicked.â
âPanicked.â Riley raised her eyebrows skeptically. âThen drove across town to kill the mistress?â
âAm I supposed to understand how murderers think?â
âYes. I would think so. Itâs your job.â
âI mostly track down cheating spouses and runaway kids, Riley.â
âThis is your first murder?â
âWell, no, but stillââ
âCome on. What else have you got? You must know something.â
âI know that the police found two airline tickets in Trentâs possession, and Sarahâs bedroom looks like she was packing for a trip.â
âSo, Trent and Sarah were about to skip town together?â
âLooks that way. And there was an engagement ring with the tickets.â
Rileyâs eyes widened. âSo, Sabrina found out he was about to wife up her competition?â
Drake nodded. âMotive enough for you?â
âMaybe,â Rileyâs gaze swept around the room distractedly.
âWhat are you looking for?â
âI donât know. Something doesnât add up.â
âSeems pretty cut and dried to me.â
They were distracted by a disturbance at the door. A plainclothesman was yelling, âSir! Sir! You canât be in here!â
They turned to find Max in the doorway. âI was justââ
The man yelling at Max whirled on the uniformed officer who seemed to be escorting him and continued, âWhat the fuck are you doing letting a reporter up here?â
âReporter?â The cop recoiled. âI thought he was the crime scene photographer!â
Returning his attention to the man with the camera, the plainclothesman shook his head. âYou do realize itâs a crime to impersonateââ
âI wasnât impersonating anyone! I was called to the scene!â
âBy who?â
âThat would be me.â Riley stood up and waved to Max.
âYou have no authority toââ
She blinked innocently at the officer. âI just needed a ride home. Iâm too shook up to drive.â
The man grunted in consternation. âFine. But he can wait for you downstairs.â Turning back to Max, he made a shooing motion, âGo!â
âIâll be waiting outside,â Max called to Riley as he was roughly escorted from the apartment.
Drake turned to her in astonishment. Lowering his voice so the police wouldnât overhear, he hissed, âYou drove yourself here. And if youâre really too upset to driveâŠwhich I sincerely doubt, I could have given you a ride home. Iâm right here.â
She shrugged and gave him a devious grin. âCanât blame a girl for trying.â Her fingers flew over her keyboard as she texted Max to get photos of the outside of the building and the police going in and out.
He reached out, grabbed her arm, and dragged her closer. âYes, they can actually! Do not give them a reason to charge you for impeding an investigation!â
âIâm happy to know you care, but they canât arrest me for calling a friend for a ride.â
âDonât play stupid, Riley. It doesnât suit you. Youâre a reporter, heâs your photographer, and he totally just tried to bullshit his way into a crime scene.â
âMax just gets enthusiasticââ
âMax does whatever you tell him to do. Iâve known you for a day, and I already know that. Heâs young and naĂŻve, and if youâre not careful, youâre going to get him in trouble.â
âAnd youâre underestimating him. Max can take care of himself.â
âYeah? And how would you feel if he got arrested because of your antics?â
âAntics?â She arched an amused eyebrow at him.
âYeah, antics. Itâs a valid word!â
âOk, grandpa.â
âGrandpa? Really?â
Riley shrugged. âIf the shoe fitsâŠâ
Drake grunted in consternation. âWhatever. Just answer the question. How would you feel if you got him arrested?â
âWell, if he managed to get himself arrested, which is highly unlikely, mind you, then Iâm sure his family would send a cadre of lawyers to get him out and probably sue the police for arresting him in the first place.â
Drake blinked. âWhoâs his family?â
Rileyâs mouth fell open. âSeriously? Heâs a Beaumont! Didnât you notice his last name when you were writing those checks to him?â
It took Drakeâs brain several seconds before the pieces fell into place. âWait. You mean those Beaumonts?â
âYeah. Why do you sound so surprised?â
âOh, I donât know, Riley! Maybe because it never occurred to me that a member of a notorious crime family would be moonlighting as a photographer for what amounts to peanuts!â
âFirst of all, all the crime was committed by his great-grandfather, and allegedly his grandfather, not him. The Beaumonts are legitimate now! Second of allââ
Drake snorted loudly. âYeah, okay.â Everyone knew that Beaumont Enterprises was a front for organized crime. Or at least suspected it. No one had ever been able to prove any accusation. Probably because of all the lawyers.
âThey are! And even if they werenâtâŠ. thatâs hardly Maxâs fault.â
âHey, I get it.â He put his hands up in the universal sign of surrender. âNo one likes to be judged by their family.â
Something in his tone drew a sharp gaze from her. âJudging from my research, your family seems pretty exemplary. Something I missed?â
He shook his head emphatically. âIâm just saying, some people may be trying to live down their familyâs infamy, while others are busy trying to live up to an impossible standard.â
Her demeanor softened. âI get that.â
âReally?â He sounded skeptical. âJudging from my research, youâre the most successful person in your family.â
âReally.â She nudged him gently. âAll that success is a stunning disappointment to parents who saved all their lives to pay for their daughterâs wedding and want nothing more than grandchildren.â
âOuch. Iâm sorry.â
âNah. Itâs fine. Iâve learned to live with it.â
âFor what itâs worth, I think youâre amazing.â
âThanks. Youâre not too bad yourself.â
They both looked up at the sound of a throat clearing. Liam fidgeted uncomfortably. âAm I interrupting something?â
Drake was the one who answered. âNothing we canât continue later. Did you need something?â
âI just wanted to let Miss Brooks know that sheâs free to go and to remind you not to keep spilling secrets to the press.â
âI didn't spill anything she wouldn't have found out on her own.â A note of admiration crept into his voice as he continued, âHave you read any of her articles? Do you know how many awards sheâs won?â
Liam frowned. âWhatâs your point?â
âMy point is, she's really good at what she does. She doesnât have to steal information from me. Sheâs the one who pointed me to Sarah in the first place.â
âDid she now?â Liam turned a thoughtful gaze to the reporter. âHow did you find out about Sarah?â
âIâm an investigative journalist, Detective. I investigated.â
âIf you had information pertinent to the case, why didnât you share it with law enforcement?â
âI did.â Riley gestured to Drake.
âRight.â Liam scoffed. âIn the future, please refer any and all relevant information about my active murder investigation to me. The officer in charge. Got it?â
âGot it.â She gave him a mock salute.
âRiley,â he pinched the bridge of his nose with a sigh. âI know youâre mocking me, but Iâm serious. There are protocols and procedures for a reason! Iâm simply trying to do my job, catch the bad guys and keep the general public, including you, safe!â
âI know, Liam. I justââ
âDo you? Because I have a code of conduct that I live by, and I take my oath to the badge seriously!â
âI do know that. You are an honorable man, Detective Rys. Which is something I really admire and respect about you.â
Surprise flashed across his face. âDo you really feel that way?â
âYes, Liam, I do.â
Drake cleared his throat. âOk, I donât mean to interrupt a moment here, butâ"
âThereâs no moment.â Liam snapped.
âAre you sure? Because to me, it looked likeââ
âIâm sure. I just wanted to impress upon Miss Brooks the importance of staying out the way of an active investigation.â
âSo just to be clear, you're not interested in dating her?â
âNo!â
âGreat!â Drake crowed before turning his attention back to Riley. âNow, about that dinnerâŠâ
Liam paled. âWaitâ"
Drake slapped him on the back with a grin. âToo late, no take backs!â
Riley shook her head. âGuys, Iâm standing right here!â
âDetective!â A plainclothesman approached Liam with a cell phone in his hand. âThe chief has a question for you.â
âAlright, Iâll be right there.â He gave one last look over his shoulder before walking away. âI mean it, stay out the way, Riley.â
âYeah. I will.â
Drake laughed. âSure you will.â
