It’s too cold and too warm at once. The sky is pitched black, stars littered in each corner. “Can I see any sort of identification?” “Here’s mine. We’re roommates.” “Thank you, Mr… Kinich.” 

“Oh my goodness, what happened here?” The plateau swings upwards, into the glaring sky. “Cut herself… -ssed from the blood.” 

“Hi… Auntie.”

Kinich paces outside the room. A call to your boss at the crack of dawn is not what he had in mind. But, at the same time, he’s not even certain how you’ve even gotten there. All he remembers is the scream. First yours, then the neighbour’s. 

He needs to take a seat. He can feel his hands trembling. It must be a given. Not a lot of things can scare the man, but your anger lies pretty highly on the list. Especially whenever he does something the two of you forbade aeons ago.

Should he notify somebody else? Lunar Frequency is a no-go. Xilonen’ll have her phone on do not disturb, and Ororon’s sleeping in. Not to mention, Kinich’d rather not traumatise the guy. Anybody else? 

Oh! Oh… He takes a deep breath. There’s a person who’d benefit from the knowledge. The boyfriend.

The door scrapes lightly against the floor. “Sorry—“ Kinich whispers to the nurse, asking for her permission to enter. “I need to grab her phone, if that’s okay?” 

“Go ahead,” The sight before him is a brutal one. You, out cold on the bed. Your dominant hand is bandaged securely. It takes him back. Not like he’d want that.

Your bag is right by the bed. Hopefully, you haven’t changed your password since the last time he’d borrowed your phone. 

“Kinich?” A tiny voice calls out as he searches for the phone in your bag. He jumps back as fingers coil around his wrist. They’re not angry… more like shaking. “What’s… going on?” You ask. 

Your eyes are darting around the room, trying to gather information. There’s sweat dripping down your neck. The last thing you remember was the mailbox, right? “You’ve injured your hand.” He crouches next to you, having dug out your phone. Did you injure it?

That’s when your dominant hand starts to feel heavy. There are bandages all over it. There was… so much blood. The room gets blurry? “Miss [Y/N], are you feeling any pain?” You shift away from the noise, the headboard grazing your back in the process. “There’s nothing to worry about, Dear.” They speak again. “I’m a nurse.” 

You nod, albeit slowly. Something is rubbing circles into your hand— Kinich. You grabbed onto him just now. Right… right. “Could you?” You try to focus. “Give me a minute?” 

“Of course, Miss.” 

Why do you know so many people? Kinich has been scrolling through the phone to figure out which number belongs to your boyfriend. There’s nothing in the recent calls… and you use Instagram DMs solely for chatting with Calx. That leaves one last place.

He feels bad for going through your texts. Phone privacy is quite the boundary. The top ones, one addressed to a “Kuni”, are from this morning. That’s probably his best bet. 

“— What’s up?” Well, that was fast. The phone didn’t even go to a second ring, how impressive. “Hello.” “Who are you? Why do you have [Y/N]’s phone?”

“I’m Kinich, her roommate. We’ve met a few times before.” Maybe he should’ve introduced himself the first thing. “Listen, I know you’re probably busy being a model,” Kinich starts. “But [Y/N] was just admitted to a hospital. Swing by if you feel like it.” 

He hangs up before hearing the reply. His duties as the friend have ended right when he relayed the information. How lucky they are for having a single hospital in the whole city. 

Now, there are more treacherous issues at hand. Mainly dealing with your parents. Kinich needs a glass of water just for that. He heads for the water cooler, passing by a patient on his way. Odd, they seem familiar. Eh, must’ve been a coincidence. Probably an older client. 

Figuring out how to make the meeting go smoothly is a challenge and a half. Kinich’s never gotten along with your parents. He can still hear the insults when he announced dropping out of college. It’s a miracle they haven’t forced you to cut all contact since then. Although considering the outcome, maybe it was a given. 

How does he explain that you’ve fallen victim to targeted bullying? That some crazy people have found out your home address and deliberately put razor blades in the mailbox. All because you’re dating a public figure. 

Kinich feels his leg shake. First time in a long while. 

“Kinich, dear!” The heels clacking are a mere announcement. The woman’s arms wrap around him, then checking all over his body. Just in case you weren’t the only one injured. “What happened?” She asks.

In his story, he bent the truth a little. You’ve passed out at the sight of blood, hitting your head on the floor. There’s no lie. Your parents don’t have to know the origin of the blood that showed up in the first place. “That’s all.” “Well,” Your father ruffles Kinich’s hair. “Thank you for calling us.” 

Of course. Otherwise, he’d risk you being forced back home. Who knows how long this time. 

“I’m not allowed to give medical information.” The receptionist says. Their voice is monotone, devoid of any emotion. Quite the opposite of the person behind her. 

Kunikuzushi’s blood is boiling. He must’ve broken multiple laws on his way here. Just to… be turned away? God, he is an idiot. He shouldn’t have been so selfish days prior. The feelings of being watched were never paranoia. “Okay, thank you—“ He throws out, stepping away.

The model steps into the waiting room, looking for any signs of Kinich. Sure, he feels off about the guy. Unfortunately for him, he’s the only one with information at the moment. Just, where is he?

“Is your business doing well?” Your mother asks, checking her watch. The nurse still hadn’t come out, stating that they were running tests to confirm your state. “It’s alright, thank you.” “Still meddling in delivery? You know, if you hadn’t dropped out of college…” Ah, the reason why Kinich called your parents as a last resort. He breathes in heavily.

“What’s up with [Y/N]?” Kunikuzushi asks while running, having just spotted your roommate. “Is she okay? What happened?” He’s out of breath, with arms on his knees as he takes a moment. “I’m sorry,” The woman says. “But who are you?” 

“Kunikuzushi.” He introduces himself. “[Y/N]’s boyfriend?” 

Crickets. 

The staring match seems to go on forever. Even bystanders are holding their breaths, immersed in the discussion. “Our daughter has a boyfriend?” The older man, whom Kunikuzushi presumes to be your father, asks. “I don’t know about it either, Love.” Okay. What is going on? 

Multiple months… and you’ve kept the relationship a secret? From your parents? Damn, it fucking hurts. “Are you fucking kidding me? We’ve been dating for months!” His voice grows louder, attracting unwanted attention. His eyes lock with Kinich’s. At least somebody’s as equally confused as him. 

The door to your room gently opens. It must be the nurse asking for silence, right? “What’s going on?” Your bandaged hand is on the doorframe as you peek out. “You.” That— That is not Kinich. 

“We’re fucking done.” Kunikuzushi’s eyes are wet with hurt. His words, however, are jagged with rage. Just as he spits out the words, he turns on his heel. Out. 

The message only gets clearer as he leaves your view. The relationship was over like that. In public. And in front of your parents. “[Y/N], is it happening again?” Your mother asks, eyes laser-focused on your hand. Great. Great, just fucking great.

The apartment matches Zandik’s personality precisely. Minimal but somehow still reeking of Clorox wipes. Clinical, if you were to describe it with a single word. The only signs of his student status are the bookshelves and whiteboards. It feels like every room gets one of each.

“Still no Thrain or Ajax?” Pantalone asks from his phone. “Thrain would never be late without a reason,” Kunikuzushi adds, sipping his water. Something on the stomach to help him suffer from the alcohol intake. With how celebrations are held in the Ginger’s culture, no party happens without spirit. 

He can feel the phone vibrate in his pocket. Whatever the notification is, it can probably wait until later. At most, it must be a social media notification. 

“Who’s ready to party?” Ajax’s voice resounds through the hallway as he slams the door open. His arms are full of liquor, as Thrain strolls behind him — clearly with a cake in hand. “Do not. Ever do that again.” Zandik glares at the Ginger. How he’s managed to bypass the entryway into the building is a mystery best left for another day. “Congratulations on the opportunity, Kunikuzushi.”

“Thanks,” The side hug between him and Thrain is more than awkward. Get yourself two people who aren’t the biggest fans of affection, they said. Another vibration. What a busy day for the Internet. 

“This cake is so good,” Childe remarks, joy spread all over his face. “Not too sweet, but not bitter either.” Given Kunikuzushi’s disdain for overly sweet desserts, coffee cake was the safest option. “Appreciate it, Thrain,” Scaramouche adds.

Once again, his phone vibrates. It’s been close to an hour now. “Think nothing of it, I’m glad.” He needs to turn to silent mode before he loses his mind.

“Dude,” Ajax stares directly into the raven-haired male’s eyes. Ah, so it seems the curiosity got the better of him. “You’re doing nothing about that?”

“About what?” Zandik’s voice is muffled as he takes out drinking glasses. “His girlfriend said she feels watched.” “It’s probably a spider, gimme a break.” Kunikuzushi feels like his eyes are going to pop out. “Dude. If I had a partner, they’d be on the same level of importance as family.” “If it’s a spider, she has a roommate. Have him murder it.” 

“Feeling watched does constitute an emergency, dare I say.” Great. Even Thrain’s on his ass now. In all honesty, he’d rather stay here. As much as the others are getting on his nerves, getting to celebrate once in a while is nice. The free booze is simply a bonus.

“Whatcha think, Lone?” Ajax turns back, doing his best to include Pantalone in the conversation. 

Wait a minute. Include Pantalone in the conversation? The group’s most reliable gossip? “Lone?” The ginger stumbles out of his chair to come up. “Are you okay?” He looks like he hasn’t gotten a wink of sleep last night. If he leaned his body forward, he’d be curled into a ball. The man who cares the absolute most about appearances. “I’m quite… alright. Worry more— not. Worry not!” 

Oh. “Do you need us to call a doctor?” The glasses are left forgotten, as everyone gathers around their colleague. “We have Zandy, should be enough, right?” As Kunikuzushi gets closer he can feel the heat straight up radiating of off him. 

“I’ll call my doctor once I’m home.” Pantalone waves his hand, dismissively. “—pleased to see me back so soon, though.” The other part is barely legible. 

But it’s understandable enough for the curiosity take notice. Zandik returns to preparing drinks for the toast, setting aside one of the glasses. Giving a sick man alcohol would be a travesty, thus he fills it with water. 

“Are you having health problems, Pantalone?” Thrain’s voice is full of kindness. “Thrain, with the most kindness in my heart, this matter is of no concern to you.” Yikes. Whatever he’s caught must be getting on his nerves. “Whatever it is,” Ajax chimes in. “It’s temporary, right?” 

Pantalone nods. He gently moves his body, extending to pick up his glass. “To Kunikuzushi’s next endeavours”

 “Cheers!” 

As the others leave, the apartment returns to its pristine nature. It’s ideally silent — perfect for reading a book. “Do you need me to drive you?” Zandik asks for his drink. “It’s not that bad yet, I’m sure you’re aware.”

“Talk like that and you’ll stop being able to walk.”

“Not good enough for a break?” Mavuika looks up from the stack of documents. The monthly payments for the building were coming up, and, as expected of her, she was too stubborn to hire an assistant. Ever since she opened the club, the entirety of your friend group begged her to hire an accountant. Both you and Ororon shake your heads against it.

After taking a sip of water, you hold your hand up. The sign to begin another attempt. Unfortunately, it's even worse than the previous attempt. A sharp missed note irks in your ears, followed by your voice giving out in the middle of the second verse. It’s so jarring that you can’t help but stop. “We’re taking a break,” Kinich says, his voice ice cold. “Now.”

His ability to overtake the authority is something you appreciate. Even if it maddens you in the moment, future you is thankful he’s thinking for you. Xilonen stretches her back and dives straight for her soda water. Yes, water is healthier. No, she doesn’t care. “How long?” She asks before taking a sip. 

“At least fifteen minutes,” Mavuika answers instead. Her eyes are focused on you, daring you to disagree with her. “You need plenty of rest.” “Says the one who’s drowning in invoices.” You mutter.

Before you know it, a table is set up. Ororon brought some cookies he and Ifa had made days prior. Oatmeal and apple snacks, in which you can taste the love. Kinich and Mavuika bring the drinks to the table, the latter joining you in taking a five. “Oh!” The younger boy perks up. “Ifa said to tell you there’s cinnamon in it.” 

Just in case somebody’s allergic, that’s your initial thought. Since enrolling in vet school, the future doctor has gone crazy about allergies. At least that’s what Ororon has told everyone. Crazy how working with animals would trigger that, but you won't complain. 

The coffee set in front of you smells so nice. Despite having caffeine, you, oddly, feel sleepier. You wouldn’t mind taking a nap. Juggling your job, maintaining the group, and a relationship is tiring.

“Y/N, go and take a nap.” Mavuika nudges you. “The practice will be here when you wake up.” You instantly shake your head. As much as that would be nice, it would not be a quick one. Two hours minimum, at the very least. Your words don’t match your actions — you’re dozing off. Your head is going up and down.

“We’re doing a group nap?” Xilonen asks, a tiny yawn escaping her. “I wouldn’t mind…” She makes herself cosy on the table, tying her hair back. Not even the night owl of Ororon can escape the overwhelming need for sleep. “You three need better sleep schedules,” Kinich mutters, moving the cups of coffee. Just in case. 

Mavuika is the one who holds the group accountable. She has set a timer for thirty minutes, enough to regain some energy but not long enough to feel like a slug afterwards. It’s a shame. The moment the alarm goes off, you feel nowhere near refreshed. 

The moment you’re up, you feel your phone vibrate. Oh, it’s good you silenced the notifications for nap time. You’d probably rip your hair up trying to fall asleep with all the pings going around.

And just like that, you’re full of energy again. You know that tying your emotional wellbeing to another person is not a healthy mechanism, but you simply cannot but to feel the joy through the messages.

“What’s up, lover girl?” Xilonen tilts her head, looking in your direction. “Something new with your boyfriend?” She asks. Gosh, are you this obvious? You can feel your cheeks getting warmer at the single mention of Kunikuzushi. 

You only nod. “It’s something big…” You mutter. Your eyes are sparkling, and your smile can probably reach both ears. Whatever happened must’ve been good. “Is it okay if Kuni joins us later?” You ask. 

“You’ve already told him to come, right?” Kinich tilts his head. God, he and his ability to read you like a book. “Yeah…” 

“Well, the more the merrier, I say.” Mavuika perks up. 

The doors open with a thud. Judging by how loud it is, the wind must’ve picked up over the last hour or so. Ororon jumps back, missing some of the last beats. Your voice cracks at the surprise. 

“Uh— Sorry, I let myself in,” Kunikuzushi shouts from the back of the room. His steps are slow, almost like he’s carrying something he’d rather not spill. “Hii!” You shout, jumping from the stage. As you get closer, you realise he’s holding a whole bag of drinks.

“Yeah, yeah, hi, good to see you, Pretty.” You freeze. As does the room. The way he used a nickname in this nonchalant tone. God, you’ll combust on the spot! “Mind helping me?” You instantly take some of the drinks up. Upon further inspection, you realise it’s lemonade.

The group comes closer, greeting Kunikuzushi in the process. “Thanks for thinking of us!” Mavuika smiles, taking one of the drinks out of the bag. Kinich and Xilonen follow, sharing a knowing look with the redhead. “There was a discount, or something…” The model mutters the last part. 

“How nice you showed up for Y/N”, Ororon adds. “She desperately needed the energy.” For the first time, you glare at him. Just because you’re acting like a lovesick schoolgirl doesn’t mean your boyfriend needs to know that. You cough a few times. “So… what’s the good news?” You ask, turning back to your boyfriend.

The talk is long, and you’re not sure you understand everything. According to Kunikuzushi, a movie director has been looking for people to play in his next endeavour. “Oh, how exciting.” Mavuika nods. Kinich, on the other hand, looks with a curious gaze. It’s like he’s looking for loopholes in the story. 

“Sorry for intruding, but wouldn’t a movie director be looking for actors and not models?” He asks. “Well, it’s the role of an extra. It’s nothing serious.” Your boyfriend rebuts. “Besides,” He leans back, crossing his arms. “It’d be a good start.” 

“Aren’t you a model thought?” Ororon asks. “Well, uh, only because it pays well. I’d been thinking of switching months ago.” 

That’s news to you. Although the more you think about it, the two of you haven’t discussed the concept of future. Aspirations, goals… those things. “Congratulations!” You clap and jump from your seat. Within seconds, your arms are around Kunikuzushi, pulling him in a big hug. “Thanks.” 

Your mind freezes. Should you kiss him on the cheek? Maybe not, you’re surrounded by people. As excited as your boyfriend is, reserving a kiss for when you’re alone sounds best. The ovations are small, but meaningful. For somebody who barely knows your friends’ names. 

You’re startled when your phone buzzes. Multiple times. Followed by a long buzz. A phone call. 

“Hello,” Calx’s melodic voice begins the moment you answer the phone. “Hopefully I’m not interrupting practice?” “You’re totally good!” You reply, beaming with joy. But something about your voice is unnerving to Kunikuzushi. “I’m going to put you on speaker.” You add. 

Calx clears his throat. “Good, uhm— evening, everyone.” Ah, the struggles of artists. When you don’t know if it’s day or is it night. “I’ve just finished the last touchups on the graphics.” “Oh, nice.” Xilonen says, while Kinich’s and Ororon’s approval is more quiet.

“I’m going to come imperson soon to share the designs, if that’s okay with everyone?” 

“Ah, you’re more than welcome, Calx!” You reply. “Okay, thank you. I’ll be hanging up now.” “Bye, bye, Mr. Calx!”

The day… has finally come. To begin preparations for the concert. Given how the graphics were the last hurdle. If only you had alcohol instead of watery lemonade. The six of you could be celebrating for two occasions instead of one. Alas, such is life. 

With the promise of going straight home, you depart with Kunikuzushi. You’re walking hand in hand, muttering to each other. It’s not before you leave the group’s field of vision that you plant a delicate kiss on your boyfriend’s cheek. As a secondary congratulations. 

The moment you leave the building, the room gets livelier than it has been for the past few hours. 

“Finally, believe her, you two?” Mavuika leans in between shocked Kinich and Xilonen. “I knew it, I knew it~” Ororon is swaying from side to side, happy with finally being proven right. After all, the first rule of fake-dating is ‘no kissing’. 

“Let’s just see how long this will last,” Kinich mutters, swinging a bag over his shoulder. “Night, everyone.” 

“Good night.”
