aaron sat up in the bed of his truck and leaned into the corner, hiking himself up on the edge of the wall. it’d been years now, since he’d blossomed into anyone girls would want to go riding in trucks with, that out by the lake had been his go-to “date” spot. he’d tried the beach for just a little, but he found this closed off body of water just a little further inland was more private, better for the quiet moments that would allow him to sneak in with whatever lucky lady he’d brought out that night. maggie must have been familiar with this by now: it wasn’t her first time in this position. she must have been used to the ritual of it all, including now, when he took a long drag off a cigarette he held outside of the bed of the truck, and looked out over the water for a moment before looking over to her. “humor me for a second - if you could move anywhere in the world, money’s not a problem and everything, where would you go?” he didn’t usually bother thinking about things like this. but in a rare moment of clarity, he felt his routine settling in, a reminder that he did feel some kind of dependent on norbury, the town. he’d never left it for longer than a week in his life, never had the chance to explore something new after high school. he wasn’t sure if he could ever leave, or if he even wanted to, but just sometimes, it’s nice to imagine he could. and if anyone would have an ambitious, aspirational answer, he knew it was maggie. | @lavensder
